Cartography between Europe and the Islamic World, 1100-1600 is an International Network funded by The Leverhulme Trust, based at Queen Mary, University of London. The Network requires a Facilitator to help manage the planning, organisation and execution of this project, which includes one workshop, to be held in 2013, and an international symposium in 2014, both to be held at Queen Mary. The role of the Network Facilitator will be to work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr Alfred Hiatt, and to undertake administrative tasks related to the network that the Principal Investigators normal working commitments (teaching, research, and administration) would make impossible.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role


The specific duties of the Network Facilitator will be as follows: co-organisation of workshop and symposium co-ordination and liaison with UK and international partners construction and maintenance of a project website construction and maintenance of project image bank (linked to website) compilation of working project bibliography (in consultation with Principal Investigator) management of network budget

The major responsibility of the Network Facilitator will be to assist in the organisation of the networks symposium, currently scheduled for September 2014. The Network Facilitator will be involved at micro and macro levels of administration required for this event, including publicity, programming, assisting participants with accommodation and travel arrangements, and monitoring expenditure. The Network Facilitator will take responsibility for creating and updating a website which will provide a portal for the network and a resource for participants in the symposium. The Network Facilitator will work with participants in the symposium and relevant network partners to compile an image bank, consisting of images of European and Islamic maps 1100-1600 chosen by partners and participants that will be addressed and analysed at the symposium. Finally, the Network Facilitator will compile a working bibliography, to be updated regularly, drawing on contributions from the Principal Investigator, visitors, partners, and participants. Timetable The Network Facilitators period of employment will extend from two months prior to the network workshop to one month after the completion of the symposium. The Network Facilitator will work on average two days per week, except in the week leading up to the symposium when s/he will work full-time. The Network Facilitator will report on a weekly basis to the Principal Investigator. The Network Facilitators timetable is as follows: 2013 August 2013 Appointment commences. ! familiarisation with nature, aims and extent of network; briefing by Principal Investigator and network visitors ! initial contact with network partners ! contribution to organisation of workshop ! commencement of construction of website. September 2013 ! attendance at workshop (10/9), and development of contacts with network partners and participants at workshop ! post-workshop liaison with network partners and participants; resolution of outstanding reimbursements arising from workshop ! continued construction of website. October 2013 ! completion of website ! co-ordination of invitations to selected participants in symposium ! initial compilation of bibliography, involving some basic research on networks topic ! establishment of contacts with cognate projects on exchange between Islam and Europe.

November 2013 ! initial inspection of symposium venues ! updating of website ! management of responses from symposium participants ! writing progress report to network partners (1000-1500 words). December-January 2013/2014 ! booking of all venues and facilities for the symposium ! initial construction and development of networks image bank, based on liaison with network partners (British Library, Bodleian) as well as the Bibliothque Nationale de France and symposium participants ! updating of bibliography, with particular attention to recent and forthcoming publications ! meeting with visitors and updating advisors on symposium planning. FebruaryMarch 2014 ! drafting symposium programme ! maintenance and development of image bank ! development of working bibliography ! updating of website ! liaison with participants and partners ! writing brief report on current state of the network budget, including projected costs of symposium. April-May 2014 ! writing progress report to partners (3-4000 words) ! renewed contact with cognate projects ! updating of bibliography, with attention to recent and ongoing research. June-July 2014 ! finalisation of image bank and working bibliography ! liaison with participants ! briefing (via email, or in person, if appropriate) of visitors and advisors. August 2014 ! finalisation of arrangements for symposium: attention to accommodation, audio/visual requirements of participants ! weekly liaison with participants ! updating of website ! preparation of materials to be distributed at symposium (i.e. conference packs). September 2014 ! co-organisation of symposium at all levels: attention to last-minute requirements of participants; scrutiny of venues. During the symposium itself the Network Facilitator must be present at all times and able to provide a basic level of technical support ! post-symposium follow-up, including processing of travel claims. October 2014 ! resolution of any post-symposium issues regarding re-imbursement; final calculation of monies spent ! and budget report ! assisting Principal Investigator in drawing up prospectus for publication of volume to emerge from ! the symposium0
