Teaching assistants: much lower salary than a teacher (but much less responsibility, no meetings) Minimum requirements: GCSE (Maths and English), but many of them, graduates and postgraduates

Britain-negative attitude towards languages


Teaching carried out by class teachers, (sometimes secondary school teachers-not Primary school specialists) Primary languages teachers...isolated...not really understood by rest of colleagues, languages not really a priority challenge for Universities: promotion of PML specialism

Statutory for KS 1 (4-year-olds) Compulsory KS 2 (11-14)

After 14, not compulsory

Time allocation for MFL. 30-60 mins a week Most popular languages:
1. French

2. Spanish
3. German

It might be a different language each year

Comenius Project- Primary CLIL
PROJECT: PML primary modern languages specialism

Undergraduates spend 1 year abroad, and then 4 weeks in a school in the country of the language they're teaching, to learn about classroom language, educational system.
