Key Assessment Projects

Key Projects

Dyfnant Wind Farm, Wales

We undertook a comprehensive landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA) for a proposed Nationally Signicant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), involving erection of 32 wind turbines over 100m tall, sub-station and 132 kV electrical connections to the National Grid, on behalf of Scottish Power Renewables. This included desk and eld survey work, consultation, inputs to the design process/mitigation measures, and reporting of landscape and visual effects (including cumulative effects). The LVIA work included preparation of scheme and cumulative Zones of Theoretical Visibility (ZTVs), wireframes, and photomontages, using WindFarm software. We also prepared the Shadow Flicker Assessment for the scheme.

GIS and Modelling

We use the latest technology to support our assessment and advisory services, including GIS (Geographical Information Systems), 3D Modelling and CGI (Computer Generated Images).

Preesall Underground Gas Storage Facility, Lancashire

We undertook a comprehensive landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA) of the proposed Nationally Signicant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), involving creation of caverns for underground gas storage, pumping and sub stations, electrical connections and gas interconnector pipeline, on behalf of Halite Energy. This included desk and eld survey work, consultation, inputs to the design process/mitigation measures, and reporting of landscape and visual effects (including preparation of photomontages). We provided expert witness services for the initial public inquiry and landscape and visual advice for the most recent examination in public.

Key Projects

Olympic Park and Legacy, London

The Olympic Park and surrounds has and will continue to entail rapid development within a highly complex planning context. During the process, we have provided landscape architecture and open space parameters advice in respect of Hyders contract to provide environmental and sustainability advisory services to the Olympic Delivery Authority Planning Decisions Team and London Legacy Development Corporation.

New Union Wharf, London

We have undertaken a townscape and visual impact assessment for the proposed residential development on behalf of East Thames Group, involving tall buildings and corresponding assessment with due regard for the Commission for Architecture and Built Environment/English Heritage Guidance and the London View Management Framework. In order to assess its impact, the visual inuence of the development was modelled using Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) remote sensing data this enables the three-dimensional relief map of cityscape (including buildings) to be taken into account in visibility mapping.

M40 Longbridge Bypass, Warwickshire

The scheme provides a 2.8km dual carriageway bypass carrying the A46 between Coventry and Stratford-upon -Avon over the M40, west of the existing motorway junction. Landscape considerations have been paramount throughout our involvement in feasibility/assessment, public consultation, public inquiry, design and construction. In particular, we have helped to achieve appropriate design in response to the nearby Sherbourne Village Conservation Area and the involvement in sustainable drainage design to feed run-off through a system of wetlands which provide attenuation, remove contamination, and incorporate habitat creation measures. In recognition of the standard of environmental design the project has received a designers Excellent CEEQUAL Environmental Award.

Crossrail, London
Hyder was appointed to provide engineering and environmental consultancy for Londons Crossrail project - Europes largest infrastructure project. Under this framework Hyder was awarded the design and appraisal of Whitechapel (shown opposite) which will provide underground connections to Crossrail, London Underground and the East London Line. Hyders landscape architects worked in collaboration with the Crossrail design team to provide townscape and visual appraisal and advisory services during the planning stages.

Hyders Landscape Architecture

Design
We use our understanding of sites and their context to fully evaluate development opportunities. As part of multi-disciplinary teams, we examine the range of physical and social considerations, including the water environment, wildlife and habitats, landform and geology, local character/identity, and accessibility, to inform strategies for the public realm, green infrastructure and cohesive masterplans. This is supported by longstanding experience of stakeholder engagement and public consultation. Guided by the information gathered at the early stages of a project, we strive to deliver innovative and sustainable design solutions that are rooted in place. We fully embrace the range of design communication tools and techniques from high quality had drawn graphics to 3D visualisation and BIM (Building Information Modelling)/COBie (Construction Operations Building Information Exchange).

Bicester Eco Development: Exemplar Green Infrastructure Typology

Key Design Projects

Key Projects

Bicester Eco-Development
Bicester Eco-Development, a 5,000 residential unit for 350ha site, is one of only four eco-towns that have met the Governments high standards, with the regeneration of Bicester at the heart of the scheme. Hyders landscape architects have been working with the wider project team to provide masterplanning, design and assessment services, together with planning for long-term land management, on behalf of P3Eco and A2 Dominion. In particular, the green infrastructure strategy for the project has been led by the Hyder landscape team.

University of Bath Campus Enhancements

The University of Bath sits within the context of nearby Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and City of Bath World Heritage Site. Since 2009, Hyders landscape team has been providing strategic advice regarding the campus masterplan, together with detailed landscape (hard and soft) design and construction phase support for campus enhancement projects including Arrivals Square, 1 West Building and, most recently, the new Centre for the Arts. Arrivals Square was completed in 2010, 1 West is currently under construction, with construction of Centre for the Arts programmed for 2013. The Arrivals Square project achieved an Excellent BREEAM rating and the landscape design won a place in the Royal Institute of British Architects Higher Education Design Exhibition 2011.

Key Projects

Shoreham Port
Hyder was commissioned by Shoreham Port Authority (SPA) to prepare a port masterplan. The Port Masterplan has helped to demonstrate a contribution to the regional and national economy and secure SPAs future as a Trust Port. The masterplan process also involved working with partners to meet local regeneration objectives, particularly in relation to the seafront public realm. Stakeholder consultations with tenants and regeneration partners were held throughout the masterplan process to provide opportunities to contribute to the proposals.

Wellington Place, Leeds

Hyder was commissioned by MEPC to produce a masterplan for this mixed-use development site in central Leeds. The major challenge was to design a temporary landscape that retains important elements of the former browneld site, whilst allowing for public access and laying the foundations for a more permanent landscape. The heart of the scheme is the development of a new public square around the historic Lifting Tower, which contributes to a strong sense of place, together with introducing exible spaces for recreation. The scheme reects MEPCs substantial commitment to the area, which is vital to the success of future regeneration.

Chief Executive Shoreham Port Authority

The whole exercise turned out to be extremely worthwhile, both internally and externally to our stakeholders This has given us a great foundation for the strategic development of the port and we are very pleased with it.

Horrocks Quarter, Preston

Hyder was commissioned by Brookhouse, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, to prepare an urban mixed-use masterplan and public realm design for this historically important quarter of Preston. The site was occupied by the former Horrocks textile producers, which formed an important design reference in place-making. Integration of retail proposals, detailed analysis of pedestrian connectivity, and future development opportunities were key to the proposals. The design principles for the public realm were conceived through comprehensive urban analysis.
