Basic information about 1,2-Propanediol

1,2-Propanediol is a clear, colourless liquid. It is viscous, has low volatility and high boiling point. In its pure form it is very hygroscopic, which means that the substance easily picks up and gives off water. 1,2-Propanediol is a clear, colorless and hygroscopic liquid. 1,2-Propanediol contains an asymmetrical carbon atom, so it exists in two stereoisomers. The commercial product is a racemic mixture. Pure optical isomers can be obtained by hydration of optically pure propylene oxide. The freezing point of water is depressed when mixed with 1,2-Propanediol owing to the effects of dissolution of a solute in a solvent (freezing-point depression); in general, glycols are non-corrosive, have very low volatility and very low toxicity (however, ethylene glycol is toxic to humans and many animals). 45% of 1,2-Propanediol produced is used as chemical feedstock for the production of unsaturated polyester resins. In this regard, 1,2-Propanediol reacts with a mixture of unsaturated maleic anhydride and isophthalic acid to give a copolymer. This partially unsaturated polymer undergoes further crosslinking to yield thermoset plastics. Related to this application, 1,2-Propanediol reacts with propylene oxide to give oligomers and polymers that are used to produce polyurethanes.
