SingandSpelltheSightWordsVolumeOneCDandDVD.Thesightwordsthatyouwillfindinthisbookare
thesameonesthatyouwillfindontheseproducts.Youwillfindthatthemini-songbookscontainthewordsto
eachsong,andfeatureillustrationsofthehandmotionsforeachsong.However,theworksheetsthemselves
containnoreferencetothesongs,andcouldthereforebeusedwithanysightwordprogram.Ifyouare

Theactivitiesincludedintheworksheetsweredesignedtogivechildrenavarietyofwaystopracticereadingandwritingthesewords.Itisverylikelythatyourchildwillnotneedtodoalloftheseworksheetsin
ordertomasterthewords,especiallywheresomeoftheeasierwordsareconcerned!Rather,Isuggestthat
throughtrialanderror,youdiscoverwhichoftheworksheetformatsismostbeneficialtoyourchilds
learning.Then,usethattypefirstwhenintroducingtheword,savingtheextraworksheetsforfurtherreinforcementifnecessary.Theymayproveusefulforhomeworkaswell.Someoftheseactivitiesinclude:
*Tracingthewholewordorpartofit,andfillinginthemissingletters
*Writingthelettersprintedinboxesthataresizedtofiteachletter.Thepurposeofthisistohelp
childrennoticethegeneralshapeoftheword.
*Visualdiscrimination.Theseareactivitiesthatforcethechildtolookcarefullyatwordsthatlooksimilar
andfindtheonesthatmatchthetargetwordexactly.Thinkofthisasaerobicsfortheeyes;ithelps
childrendevelopthevisualacuityneededinordertoreadandwrite.
*Coloringthewordprintedinhollowblockletters,andRainbowWritingtheword,whichistracingthe
wordwithseveraldifferentcolors.Forthis,coloredpencilsormarkersworkbest.
*Writingthesightwordsinsentenceswithafillintheblankformat.
*Readingcomprehension-readingthewordinasentence,circlingit,andillustratingitsmeaning
*Writing-writeyourownsentenceusingthetargetsightword.
Thepurposeofthemini-songbooksisforchildrentoseethewordstothesongsinprintandpracticereadingthem.Afterduplicatingthepagestothesemini-books,cutthepagesapartandcolatethebook.Then,encourageyourchildtopointtoeachwordasheorsherecitesthesongs,asthispretendreadingoftenleads
torealreadingbeforeyouknowit!Iwouldadviseyoutoresisttheurgetohandthebooklettoyourchildand
walkaway,asthemostimportantpartofthisactivityishavingyourchildpointtoeachwordashereads.Beginningreadersoftendonotnoticethewordboundaries,andhavetroubleidentifyingwhereonewordendsand
anotherwordbegins.Youcanhelpyourchildunderstandthisconceptbyhavinghimfinddifferentindividual
wordsinthebookletthatheorshealreadyknows,andshowinghimwherethewordstartsandends.Mystudentsenjoyfindingcertainwordsinthebooklets,andcirclingthosewordsandcoloringthemadesignated
