Firmware Update Guide


Micron RealSSD C300 Firmware Revision 0006 Boot from CD update guide (Update from Rev 0002 to Rev 0006)

Introduction
ThisdocumentdescribestheprocessofupdatingthefirmwareontheMicronRealSSDC300usingabootableCD andanISOimage.TheISOimagecontainsthe0006firmwareupdateandDOSbootcode. ThisprocessistobeusedforupdatingtheFirmwarefromRevision0002toRevision0006.Itwillnotworkfor updatingbetweenanyotherversions.IfyourdrivehasRevision0001firmware,thenyoumustfirsttakethe intermediatestepofupdatingtoRevision0002.InstructionsforupdatingfromRevision0001toRevision0002 areavailableatthewww.micron.comwebsite WARNING:Aswithallfirmwareupdates,itisstronglyrecommendedthatyoubackupormakecopiesofall importantfilesbeforeperformingthisupdate.Thisfirmwareupdateprocessisdoneentirelyatyourownrisk. Ifperformedcorrectly,therewillbenolossofsystemoruserdataonthedrive.However,ifthefirmware processisinterruptedforanyreason,yoursolidstatedrivemaynotfunctionproperly.

Download the Firmware Update
1. 2. Beforebeginningthefirmwaredownloadprocesscloseallotherprogramsexceptforyourinternet browser. FindtheC300Revision0006FirmwareUpdateUtilityassociatedwithyourMicronSSDatthe www.micron.comwebsite,undertheDocumentationtabfromtheProducts>RealSSD>ClientSSD page.SelectSoftwarefromthedropdownmenu. ThedirectURLishttp://www.micron.com/products/solid_state_storage/client_ssd.html ClicktheDownloadlinkfortheproductdesired,andthebrowserwillpromptyoutoselectOpen,Save orCancel.SelectSavetodownloadtheISOImagetoyoursystem. UsingCDBurningsoftwareofyourchoice,burntheISOImagetoCDmedia.

Complete the following steps before starting the firmware update process:
1. BackuptheSolidStateDrive
Itishighlyrecommendedthatfullsystembackupbecompletedbeforestartingthisfirmwareupgradeprocedure.If theupgradeisinterrupted(byapowerlossorhardwarefailureofsomesort),itispossiblethatthesolidstatedrive maynotfunctionproperly.

2. PlugDriveintoMotherboardport03
IfyourSSDisinadesktopcomputersystem,ensurethatyourSSDispluggedintooneofthefirstfourportsonthe motherboard,typicallylabeled0through3.SomesystemsdonotsupporthotpluggingyourSSD.Ifnecessary, shutdownpowertoyoursystembeforepluggingyourSSDintoanewport.Note:Theupgradeprocesswillnot workwithsomedropinHBAs(HostBusAdapters)or6.0Gb/sports.Ifyourdriveisnotidentifiedproperly(see Step3underRuntheFirmwareUpdatesectionbelow. Mostnotebookcomputerswillnotrequireaphysicalchangeofports.

3. UseACPower
EnsureyourmobilePCordesktopPCispluggedintoACpowerduringtheupdateprocess.Itisnotrecommended touseonlybatterypowerduringtheupgrade.Donotremovepoweratanytimeduringthefirmwareupdate processasthiscouldproduceincompleteresultsandmayrenderyoursolidstatedriveunusable.

4. EditBIOSSettings
Perthestepsbelow,youmayneedtoedityourcomputersBIOSsettings.Pleaseseeyourcomputersowners manualfordetailsoneditingthesesettings.

a) Disable/RemoveDrivePasswords
EntertheBIOS(typicallybyhittingtheDelete,F2orF12keyduringstartupscreen),anddisableany passwordsthatyoumayhavesetontheSSD.Passwordprotectionswillblockfirmwareupdates.

b) ChecktheBootOrder
IfyoursystemdoesnotbootfromCD/DVDdrive,youwillneedtoedityourBIOSsettings.Whileinthe BIOSeditor,checkthedrivebootorder.Asadefault,mostsystemswillbootfromtheCDROM/DVDdrive beforethesystemdrive.DependingontheBIOSvendor,findanoptionnamedBootDevicePriority, BootLoadOrder,orpossiblyAdvancedBIOSFeatures.Ensurethatthesystembootstothebootable mediadrivebeforethedrivethatcontainstheOS.

c) ChangeSATAmodetoIDEmode
FromBIOSSetup,changetheSATAmodetoIDEorLegacymodeorcompatibilitymode.Thefirmware updatewillnotworkinAHCImode.LookforaparameternamedSATAConfiguration,orpossibly IntegratedPeripherals.

Run the Firmware Update


1. InsertthebootableCDmediawiththeISOImageintoyoursystem. 2. Rebootthesystemfromthebootablemedia.ThiswillautomaticallystarttheFirmwareUpdate.The followingscreenwillappear:

4. YoumayseeWaitingforDRQpriortobeingaskedtoupdatethefirmware.Thesemessagesarenormal. Enteryesinlowercaseletterswhenaskedtoupdatethefirmware.Thefollowingscreenwillappear:

The.characterswillprintperiodicallyastheupgradeprogresses.Thelengthoftimefortheupgradeto takeisdependentonhowmuchuserdataispresent.Foranewornearlyemptydrive,theprocesstakes onlyseconds.Foradrivethatisnearlyfull,itisnormalfortheprocesstotake3to4minutes,asthe upgradesoftwaretakesstepstoprotectuserdata. 6. Uponcompletion,thefollowingmessagewilldisplay:

7. IMPORTANT!!!Therevisionofthefirmwarewillbelisted.IftherevisionisNOTlistedas0006,thenrepeat theprocessfromStep1oftheRuntheFirmwareUpdatesectionabove. 8. Ifyouarenotsurewhatrevisionfirmwareyouhaveorwanttoconfirmyoucanenter dosmcli --verbose -d attheA:\>prompt.ThelastlineshownistheFirmwareRevision.If0006isnotshown,repeattheprocess fromStep1oftheRuntheFirmwareUpdatesectionabove.PLEASENOTE:ThiscommandwilllistallATA drivesonyoursystem,notjusttheMicronSSD. 9. Shutdownyoursystembypressingandholdingthepowerbutton.Ifnecessary,moveyourSSDscableback toitsoriginalport. 10. TurnpowerbackON.RemembertoreentertheBIOSSetup.YoumayrevertanyBIOSsettingsyoumadeat thestartofthisprocessbacktooriginalsettings. 11. Processiscomplete.
