The Prophet (peace be upon him) showed us the importance of planning.

He was meticulous in his planning, and in that way, he taught those around him how important it is to plan one's course of action. One good example of this was how he planned his emigration from ecca to adinah. He decided on the route he was going to ta!e, set a date for his departure, and he made sure to ha"e a reliable guide and sufficient pro"isions. He arranged the matter with #b$ %a!r, and made sure that they could lea"e from ecca undetected. #ll of this planning, and all of the precautions that the Prophet (peace be upon him) too!, did not contradict with his utmost reliance upon #llah in any way. This is because a uslim is supposed to ta!e all the lawful and practical steps a"ailable and then place all of his or her trust in #llah to bring about the desired results. That is the true meaning of relying on #llah. &hen the Prophet (peace be upon him) was as!ed whether it is better to tie up one's camel or trust in #llah to !eep it from running off, the Prophet (peace be upon him) replied' (Tie up the camel and trust in #llah.( )Sunan al-Tirmidh (*+,-). The Prophet (peace be upon him) had the utmost faith in #llah, but this ne"er pre"ented him from planning sensibly for what he wanted to achie"e. This is a lesson for those who wish to disseminate the message of /slam to others. /t is "ital to ha"e a well0thought0out program before embar!ing upon this noble wor!. /n doing so, we are following our Prophet's example. The worst thing we can do is simply react to what goes on around us, responding to those who critici1e /slam without planning or forethought. /t is imperati"e that we understand the circumstances we are dealing with, and thereby respond 2udiciously and producti"ely to what ta!es place in the world. &e need to ta!e a long "iew. &e can see how the Prophet (peace be upon him) too! the long "iew when he went to the city of T3'if to spread the message of /slam. #fter presenting /slam to the leaders of the city in a polite and respectful manner, the city's elders replied by setting the street urchins upon him, commanding the urchins to dri"e him out of town by pelting him with stones. He bore this patiently, and merely continued in his plan to call the "arious tribes of #rabia to /slam. embers of these tribes were always coming to ecca for the pilgrimage, and he would present himself to them during the pilgrimage season. /n spite of the persecution that he and his followers were facing daily in ecca, he persisted in representing /slam to all the tribes of #rabia. He !ept to his plan until finally he met with a delegation from the tribe of 4ha1ra2 coming from the city of adinah. The members of this delegation recogni1ed him to be the essenger of #llah. This would lead ultimately to the emigration of the uslims from ecca to adinah. The Prophet's foresight had surely paid off. &hen he had seen how his own people 5 the tribe of 6uraysh in ecca 5 were so "iolently opposed to his message, he reali1ed the need for a

practical plan that would bring him the support that he needed. He carefully planned how and when he would meet with each of the tribes, in spite of the fierce opposition of 6uraysh, and he succeeded in meeting with all of them. 7i!ewise, after gaining the support of the delegation from 4ha1ra2, e"en more careful planning was needed in order for him to meet with a subse8uent delegation from adinah representing both of its tribes, the other being the tribe of 9#ws. This second meeting, which too! place duringthe pilgrimage season of the following year, included se"enty0fi"e citi1ens of adinah, representing men and women from both tribes. They pledged their loyalty and support for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and in"ited him and his followers to come to adinah. #rri"ing at this goal too! many years of persistence and planning. /t meant the end of persecution for the uslims and the beginning of a new era.

rophet Muhammad as a Strategic Planner

Prophet uhammad as a :trategic Planner

Part One' igration to #byssinia #n expert in strategic planning, ;r. <arter c=amara defines the term as follows' :imply put, strategic planning determines where an organi1ation is going o"er the next year or more, how it is going to get there, and how it will !now if it got there or not. The focus of a strategic plan is usually on the entire organi1ation, while the focus of a business plan is usually on a particular product, ser"ice, or program. ( ,) #lthough / am not a strategic planner by profession, / ha"e recei"ed special training on this sort of planning on two or more occasions. Through this training, / grasped some idea of the nature of strategic planning and its importance for any entity aspiring to progress or e"en to sur"i"al. / learned that no ambitious organi1ation can progress without planning or trying to foresee the future "ia applying famous measures, such as :&OT analysis (analysis of strengths, wea!nesses, opportunities, and threats). #lso, other tools are used in the analysis of all that is in"ol"ed in the process of operating this entity. This should be the beha"ior of today's uslims, whether they are employees at some institution, citi1ensin a country, or indi"iduals in the uslim >mmah as a whole. #ll uslims should apply strategic planning in one way or another to preser"e their identity and e"en the "ery existence of the uslim >mmah. 7essons ?rom :eerah To scheme a strategic plan for the future, uslims should loo! into their history to learn lessons and deri"e wisdom. any incidents in the biography (seerah) of Prophet uhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) re"eal his personal s!ills and inherent talent bestowed on him by #lmighty #llah. Out of these incidents and the way he tac!led them, numerous lessons can be learned and countless pieces of wisdom can be cherished. #mong the s!ills bestowed on the Prophet was his ability to scheme strategic plans for the da9wah (in"iting people to /slam). He was entrusted with this mission by #llah, &ho says in the @lorious 6ur'an, (=or does he ) uhammad. spea! out of )his own. desire. /t is naught sa"e an inspiration that is inspired. The 7ord of ighty Powers has taught him.) (#n0=a2m +A'A5+) This s!ill of the Prophet can be seen in many incidents, such as the Treaty of #l0Hudaibiyah when he managed the situation with 6uraish. # second example is his ad"ice to a number of his <ompanions to lea"e a!!ah and see! asylum in #byssinia . Here, only the latter incident will be dealt with. # discussion on the Treaty of #l0Hudaibiyah is left to another occasion in the near future, in sha' #llah. #ny one who scans the boo!s of Prophetic seerah will apparently notice that nearly all of these boo!s attribute uslims' see!ing asylum in #byssinia to the mere a"oidance of the oppression of 6uraish. Howe"er, to me, this cannot be the sole reason behind this tiresome 2ourney, which lasted for years and years in its second "ersion. / do thin! that there are other reasons behind that immigration to #byssinia and that it was not merely to a"oid the tyranny and oppression of 6uraish. /n fact, it was done to fulfill other goals, as well.

oti"e for /mmigration to #byssinia #mong the things that made the Prophet ad"ise his companions to immigrate to #byssinia was the se"erity of torment they witnessed at the hands of the polytheists of 6uraish. Those latter used all sorts of torture !nown at the time to force uslims to renounce their true religion. Howe"er, those who immigrated to #byssinia were not only from among the poor and the wea!. The dispatch included, among others, 9>thman ibn 9#ffan and his wife, Bu8ayyah, the Prophet's own daughter. #lso, Ca9far ibn #bi Talib, the Prophet's cousin, was in the dispatch. /t is important to !now that #bu Talib (Ca9far's father and the Prophet's uncle) used to protect the Prophet from the "iolence of 6uraish. How then could he not protect his own son, Ca9far, from the tyranny of polytheistsD &hy did Ca9far resort to see!ing asylum in a distant place li!e #byssiniaD The uslim dispatch also included 9#bdur0Bahman ibn 9#wf, #bu :alamah #l0 a!h1umi, and #10Eubayr ibn #l09#wam, who were all noble and public figures in the 6uraishi scene. :ome women from among the noblest households of 6uraish were also part of the dispatch. Those women would ha"e ne"er been harmed in any way if they chose to remain in a!!ah. This may suggest that one of the reasons behind this immigration was to sha!e the 6uraishi social context from within. <ertainly, the 6uraishi people understood this, especially that some of their noblest figures immigrated and deserted their homeland to sa"e their faith, lea"ing behind the !ith and !in. /ndeed, such an immigration shoo! the 6uraishi society "ery "iolently, especially that >mm Habibah, the daughter of 6uraishi leader #bu :ufyan, was one of the immigrants. ?or such a noble woman to abandon her household and homeland for her religion, this was indeed remar!able in a tribal society li!e that of 6uraish. To me, foremost among all reasons is that the Prophet wanted to !eep a strategic reser"e for /slam in a far and safe place beyond the reach of 6uraish's tyranny. He wanted to !eep these people intact away from the scourges of war. /n other words, he wanted to establish a base outside the area of conflict to preser"e the faith and !eep it intact in a safe place until e"erything is decided by #lmighty #llah. /f the aim was the mere a"oidance of harm, Ca9far ibn #bi Talib and the other FA male and female <ompanions would ha"e left #byssinia and immigrated to adinah immediately after the Hi2rah. # strong uslim state and capable army were established in adinah after the Hi2rah, and therefore those who had immigrated to #byssinia would ha"e been safe in adinah. Howe"er, the <ompanions stayed in #byssinia for ,G years. =one of them immigrated to adinah until the war between 6uraish and uslims came to an end. ;uring that period, uslims were forced to fight 6uraish in many decisi"e battles, such as the battles of %adr, >hud, and #l0#h1ab. Ca9far and other <ompanions came bac! to adinah only a year before the %attle of u'tah. ;uring that period, adinah was threatened by a sweeping attac! from 6uraish for about fi"e years. The last attac! against adinah was the %attle of #l0#h1ab, where more than ,H,HHH fighters from among the polytheists came to uproot uslims and their faith. #fter the defeat of polytheists at the hands of uslims, the Prophet said, (Today, we con8uer them and they do not con8uer us( (#l0%u!hari). The danger of sweeping adinah ended with this battle, which was followed by the Treaty of #l0 Hudaibiyah in the Ith year of Hi2rah. This treaty stressed the end of this danger and underlined

6uraish's official recognition of the new uslim state in adinah. &hen the Prophet became confident that adinah was no longer fearful of being swept by the forces of disbelief and that it became a safe ha"en for uslims, he sent for those who immigrated to #byssinia, commanding them to return. /slam was no longer in need of that strategic reser"e, which would ha"e been indispensible if adinah were to fall in the hands of the enemy. #nother main reason for immigration to #byssinia was to spread the word of /slam outside a!!ah. This religion is a uni"ersal one that should not be confined to a certain place, be it a city, a state, or e"en a continent. #s for the first 2ourney to #byssinia, uslims stayed there only for a month and then came bac! to a!!ah. The aim was to explore the place. 7essons to 7earn #s mentioned earlier, many lessons can be deri"ed from the plan of immigration to #byssinia schemed by Prophet uhammad. #lthough the Prophet li"ed in a!!ah at the time, he was aware of what was happening around him in the #rabian Peninsula and its surroundings. He !new that the =egus of #byssinia was a 2ust !ing and that no one would be wronged under his rule. This should be a trait of all uslims' to !now and understand the context in which they are li"ing and ha"e an idea about the en"ironment surrounding them to be able to !now when and how to do something. #nother lesson would be endurance in the cause of #llah. The Prophet and his noble <ompanions suffered in a!!ah and in adinah and endured many calamities and plights in the cause of #llah. True uslims should be steadfast in the face of all calamities that might afflict them in the way of da9wah. True belie"ers should be steadfast in their belief. They should ne"er resort to any sort of compromise or submission to the pressures of the enemy. 9#mr ibn #l09#as, who was a disbelie"er when uslims immigrated to #byssinia, maliciously tried to persuade the =egus to abstain from pro"iding uslims with a safe ha"en. Howe"er, Ca9far and his companions unanimously agreed to say only the truth and nothing but the truth. This made the =egus respect them and their call, and he secretly embraced /slam at last. The incident of immigration to #byssinia also shows that the Prophet had great mercy for his <ompanions when he ad"ised them to migrate from a!!ah. #ma1ingly, when Ca9far and his companions immigrated to adinah, the Prophet did not gi"e them a brea!. The Prophet appointed Ca9far as a second0in0command with the army commander Eayd ibn Harithah in the army heading for u'tah. #s already mentioned, Ca9far was the Prophet's cousinJ he was lo"ed by the Prophet. He had a "ery close resemblance to him. He stayed away from the Prophet for ,G years, yet the Prophet appointed him as a second0in0command in an army of A,HHH uslim fighters who faced *HH,HHH Boman fighters in the %attle of u'tahK ?inally, this immigration shows a new dimension of Prophet uhammad's noble character' # strategic planner who was of course aided by #lmighty #llah Himself. #lmighty #llah pro"ided His wea! and oppressed ser"ants with a safe ha"en and protected them from the harm of 6uraish. He made them feel safe and secure about their li"es and religion. ?urther, He enabled them to spread the religion of truth through calling to it with

wisdom and good ad"ice. uslims also won a new land, which was a starting point for their call in the region, as part of the global message of /slam. :trategic Planning Be"isited /n relation to the aforementioned definition of strategic planning, there are two things to be loo!ed into' ?irst' :trategic planning for an entity co"ers a period of one or more years L maybe two or three years. eanwhile, uslims' immigration to #byssinia, which was planned by the Prophet, lasted for about ,G years. &hat a farsighted and futuristic strategic planningK :econd' The focus of strategic planning is usually on the entire entity, not any of its branches or offshoots. This is exactly what was done by the Prophet' His focus was on the entire religion of /slam and the community of all uslims. He put aside a group of uslims as a strategic reser"e for the >mmah and the religion of /slam. #lthough /slam is a di"ine religion, it still needs human effort to be well established in the land. This is one of the characteristics of this religion as may be understood from numerous incidents. /n conclusion, this article was only a glimpse of the great political thin!ing and farsighted strategic planning practiced by the Prophet in the process of building the uslim state. /n so doing, he studied all possibilities and came to !now all the strengths, wea!nesses, threats, and opportunities in"ol"ed in the whole situation. ?inally, he could find an appropriate place for the uslim state, which helped protect the uslim faith from all harms. c=amara, <arter.
