Simulation application installation instructions

1. Open Part 1 - Current State VSM.zip archive

2. Copy the folder Part 1 Current State VSM

3. Paste Part 1 Current State VSM folder to a preferred location

4. Open Part 1 Current State VSM folder and click (open in a browser) Part 1 - Current State VSM (Non Lean. Push Principle Manufacturing ).html file

5. The browser will display the simulation model in the form of a Java applet as in the figure below

6. Click the Start button (see picture above) and the simulation will start to run in virtual mode (roughly 30 times faster than the real system modeled). The other buttons are used to control the simulation speed, display the associated VSM of the simulated system and information relevant for the user.

IMPORTANT! Java Virtual Machine (JVM) memory allocation

The simulation application you are running ideally requires 512 MB memory allocation for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Most often the operating system allocates only 256 MB memory for the JVM which usually is enough to run this application. However, if you would like to utilize its full capabilities (e.g. changing delivery schedules, modifying buffer capacities etc.) you should increase the JVM allocated memory to at least 512 MB. The more memory, the faster and more responsive the application will be. To increase the JVM allocated memory follow the steps indicated below.

1. Open the Control Panel of your operating system (Windows in our case)

2. Open the Programs settings category and you will see the Java icon

3. Click the Java icon and the JVM configuration window will open

4. Click the View button and the Java Runtime Environment Settings window will open

5. Add/modify the Runtime Parameter as above e.g. -Xmx512m for 512 MB memory allocation; Xmx1024m for 1024 MB.
