I COME TO WORK WITh MY hEAD hELD hIGh WITh NO ShAME.

I am the eldest of 10 children and grew up in a village in Murshidabad. When I reached my teens there was a boy I quite fancied. I think I would have liked to marry him, but when I was 13 my mother married me o to an older man. It was only a few months after the wedding that my mother-in-law sent me out into a eld near where we lived. When I got there I found a group of boys about my own age that I had grown up with. They told me that I had been sold to them and they all had their way with me. Soon after that I was sold to someone in Kolkata. I saw girls sitting around and was told they were enjoying the fresh air, but eventually I noticed that there were a lot of men coming and going and realized what was happening. It was about that time that I was corrupted and my time in the line (sex trade) began. When I met the man who is now my husband, he wanted me to leave the trade. I wanted to leave too, but he didnt have a good job and we needed money to survive so I was forced to continue working in the line. Page 8 Stock Products 2014

When I came to Freeset 11 years ago, I committed to leave the sex trade when I received my rst paycheck after the training period. Thats exactly what I did and Ive never looked back! I come to work with my head held high - with no shame. Ive given up the line, I have freedom. I am now an advocate for Freeset, letting women in the sex trade know that there is the possibility of another life where they can be free from prostitution.

You may know jute as hessian or burlap and associate it with sacks or rope but it is so much more than that! Often described as the golden ber, jute is a biodegradable natural ber that comes from a leafy reed-like plant. It grows easily in West Bengal and has only minimal need of fertilizers and pesticides which can harm the environment. Bottom line: re-usable jute bags oer an eco-friendly and stylish alternative to plastic shopping bags.

The fabric used in our cotton products is 100% organic. Conventional cotton farming consumes massive quantities of toxic insecticides to control pests. These hazardous toxins pollute the environment and cause serious health problems for poorly protected Indian cotton laborers. REcYcLED sARI
The sari is a traditional wrap-around garment for women, worn with one end tossed over the shoulder. Every-day attire for rich and poor alike, saris have been a colorful mainstay of the Indian womans wardrobe for centuries. As no two saris are the same, every bag is unique. When I was 14, my father passed away and most of our familys land was taken. I worked in the homes of other villagers for a while, earning just enough money to feed my family. When I was 17, the local milkman suggested to my mother that I go with him to Kolkata. He said that he had found a job for me there, but when I went with him, he sold me for Rs.5000 (US$1000 in todays money) and I was forced to have sex with men. Years later, I got a job at Freeset. Now I am totally focused on my work at Freeset and my goal is to provide a decent life for my family.

The literacy training that I have received means I can now sign my name and write numbers, including my address. Now I can read bus routes and train destinations - before the training I was not at all condent to leave my house, but now I am very independent. I am doing well in my life now, I get more respect in this society - that is my biggest achievement.

Human tracking and poverty feed Indias sex trade, where women and children forced into prostitution face a life without choices, marginalized by society. Freeset is a bag and apparel manufacturing business whose purpose is to provide these women with a way out of prostitution, or in the case of younger women, a way to avoid it altogether. Women are employed on the basis of their need for a job, not the skills they bring to it. They are trained, paid a good wage and signed up to a health insurance plan and pension fund.
