Crocheting: a way of doing different outcomes

Mirari Senz de Viteri Cerio

I have longed believed that I need to enroll myself in a course to learn how to sew. Nonetheless, I have never gone ahead with this idea. So, when we were given the opportunity in this module to decide on a topic we would like to work on, I first thought on sewing or on another similar technique. This interest is due to the fact that I do not even know how to pick up a needle and I would like to be able to do outcomes by myself as well as feeling the need to be able to fix the clothes. Bearing in mind that I was really interested in the topic and having seen the cute teddies that I would be able to do crocheting amigurumis, I was really motivated. On the one hand, because I had the chance to start with these ancient techniques and, on the other hand, due to the fact that I love handcrafts. That is why I looked for information and videos that could help us learn how to crochet, buy the material needed there were many different aspects to take into account! When I had everything I needed to start crocheting, I felt anxious, desirous, enthusiastic. Finally, I had the opportunity to start this old passion! Nonetheless, it has been really hard to learn something via online videos. I found nobody to whom I could ask my questions. However, my excitement allowed me to persevere. And it worked! Nowadays, and little by little, I am able to crochet small cute teddies, such as witches, snowmen or sheep. During this long process I have learnt many skills. I feel that now I am a person that has been able to look for different alternatives in order to achieve the goal. For that, active listening (I have listened to my group mates advice, experience) has been essential, which is the aspect I would like to highlight. Even if I think that I am a good listener, during this project I have improved this skill. And undoubtedly, I would say that I have improved it because this module has allowed me to do more practical lessons, we have had the opportunity to start on a new topic we were interested in and look for information.

Not only have I acquired experience, but I have had the chance to enrich my vocabulary. It has been quite hard because we did not even know words related to crocheting in Spanish, hat is our first tongue. Therefore, we have done a great job looking for information on the Internet, asking our relatives so that we could understand the vocabulary required to start crocheting. Furthermore, we have needed to learn that vocabulary in English, that has not been an easy work. On the one hand, because we had never listened to those words and, on the other hand, due to the fact that the pronunciation was not so easy. Nonetheless, and thanks to wordreference program, we now know different words to talk about crochet. So, all in all, I would say that this module has helped me in many different aspects: I have had the opportunity to look for information by myself without any help, I have had the chance to develop a topic I was interested in and to step in and take charge. My mates and I were in charge of learning how to crochet without any guideline and, even if in the beginning it sounded quite abstract and difficult, I would say that I am proud of the work we have made as a group. Due to the fact that now we are able to crochet. In addition, the fact that the lessons have been practical has helped us a lot in our learning; we have had the chance to experiment and to put theory into practice!
