Cable car innovator The Austrian Doppelmayr Group (Doppelmayr) is the leading worldwide manufacturer of cable car and transport systems for summer and winter tourism regions, and for local transport systems for towns, airports, shopping centers, leisure

parks, exhibitions and trade fairs. In the business year 2005-2006, the group increased its sales by 20 percent. The 2,223 worldwide employees of the company implemented 180 cable car projects, most of them in the European Alpine region and in North America, and increasingly also in eastern, central and southeastern Europe. cable car system in Switzerland (in Flumserberg), which transports up to 4,000 passengers per hour more people than any other cable car in Switzerland; the largest aerial tramway in Austria (in Mayrhofen in the Tyrolean Zillertal) with cabins of the three kilometer Ahornbahn that can comfortably accommodate up to 160 passengers; and the first combined cable car system in Germany (in Nesselwang in the Bavarian Allgu) with thirty chairs and 10 gondolas hanging from the cable at the same time a world premier with chairs for four people and gondolas for eight people. Unique cable car installation Another example of the companys innovation is the Galzigbahn in St. Anton am Arlberg. The 24-FUN Galzigbahn can carry 2,200 people per hour from the valley to the mountain station, traveling from 1,319 to 2,085 meters above sea level in just over nine minutes and covering a distance of 2,542 meters, measured diagonally. One of the 28 cabins leaves every 40 seconds, carrying up to 24 passengers. These figures are impressive, but even more impressive is the way the cabins are guided using giant wheels more than nine

meters high. Thanks to this innovation in cable car technology, passengers can enter the cabins at ground level, although they float high above the ski slope when traveling. The individual cabins come from above and are guided down to ground level over the giant wheel, so that the passengers can enter comfortably, and are then taken upwards again over the giant wheel before leaving the station. It is no longer necessary to mount a staircase before entering the cabin, which can be dangerous wearing ski boots, holding skis with one hand and a child with the other. The unique nature of the Galzigbahn is also due to the work of the base stations Tyrolean architect, Georg Driendl, who has created a transparent, dynamic structure. His architecture puts the spotlight on the giant wheel, the engineering and the movement. The base station is a structure made of concrete, glass and steel, creating a timelessly elegant, yet contemporary, impression. This is particularly true at night, when the station is illuminated and two cabins hang on the wheel to demonstrate the fascinating engineering used in the project. Many articles have been written about the Galzigbahn in architectural journals.

A project with no room for error It is not only the technology and the architecture that make the cable car on the Galzig unique, however. The installation was completed in the record time of just under seven months. The old aerial tramway ran for the last time on May first, was demolished on May second and construction work on the new system began shortly afterwards. Actual assembly of the new cable car started at the beginning of August. The new Galzigbahn was tested for the first time at the end of September and transferred to the Arlberger Bergbahnen AG at the end of November. The schedule was tight and did not leave any room for error. With components of this size a giant wheel has a diameter of 9.30 meters there is no second chance or the schedule cannot be maintained. To ensure the success of this challenging project, Doppelmayr decided to develop the innovative cable car technology with NX software and Teamcenter software from Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division. This was the first time that the engineers in Wolfurt used digital design tools for the entire development and construction of such a complex project.

Time saved The time that was saved through the use of Siemens PLM Software technology proved the wisdom of this decision, as Doppelmayr engineer Dirk Czerwinski confirms. For components with a large number of variants, thanks to NX software and 3D we are up to one quarter faster for the first variant and up to 60 percent faster for further variants than with 2D, he says. As far as he is concerned, digital design technology can already do almost everything he needs, so NX today is ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow. A cable car installation as complex as the Galzigbahn consists of a large number of different components. The switchover device alone needs between 30 and 40 moving parts. Doppelmayr was able to handle this huge variety of components easily thanks to Teamcenter software, as another Doppelmayr engineer, Gerd Dr, explains. We managed all the models exclusively using this system, he says. Teamcenter manages all the data, parts and models consistently during the development process and provides them everywhere they are needed. This forms the basis for simultaneous engineering. With the giant wheel, which allows passengers to enter and exit comfortably from the cabins at ground level, Doppelmayr has achieved a world first in its industry and opened up a new era of cable car technology. According to Christoph Hinteregger, many more are now interested in similar systems. We have received inquiries from several cable car operators, he says. Our solution can be adapted to many different situations and is suitable for use wherever passengers should be able to get in and out easily, despite differences in height.
