1.0 HISTORIC L ! C"#ROUN$ The National University of Science and Technology Library was established in 1992. A small room made available by the B lawayo ! blic Library was home to an o"ening collection of 2 ### vol mes consisting "rimarily of donations and a com"lement of two members of staff$ an Assistant Librarian and a Library Assistant. Another Assistant Librarian %oined in &an ary 199'. The Library moved to 11( )ort Street$ in the city centre$ in A"ril 199' at which time *r +obin ,o st ass med the "ost of University Librarian on 1st A"ril 199'. *r ,o st left the University a year later and was s cceeded by *s -athy *atsi.a in A"ril 199/. The staff com"liment has since grown to a total of (/. The Library is still tem"orarily ho sed in the city centre$ ntil constr ction of a new state0of0the0art Library that began at the University cam" s in 1999 is com"leted. The Library has received significant boo. donations mainly from Boo. Aid 1nternational$ 1nternational Boo. Ban.$ the 2erman Scientific Society$ *r 1srael 2am chirayi 3hidavaen4i$ a friend of NUST Library based in , blin$ 1reland$ !atricia 3am"bell based at the University 3ollege London$ the British 3o ncil and other well wishers from all over. 1n addition$ Beit Tr st in 1995 f nded the setting " of the Library Local Area Networ. 6LAN7 and the Library +eso rce 3entre with f ll 1nternet facilities. By 199/ the Library had made a decision to f lly com" teri4e and a search for a s itable system was on. After e8amining several systems$ the library finally settled on 1nnovative 1nterfaces9 1NN:!A3 *illenni m and a""roached vario s organi4ations for f nds to " rchase the system. 1n 1999 S1,A;SA+<3 gave a grant for the " rchase of 1NN:!A3 *illenni m$ an 1ntegrated Library *anagement System. An agreement to " rchase the system was then signed in *arch 2### between the University and 1nnovative 1nterfaces 1nc. , e to "roblems in the "roc rement of the necessary hardware to r n the system$ the "ro%ect was im"lemented in 2##'. The Library is an instit tional member of the =imbabwe Library Association 6=LA7$ The 1nternational )ederation of Library Associations and 1nstit tions 61)LA7 and the =imbabwe University Libraries 3onsorti m 6=UL37. %.0 &'&!'RSHI( All f ll0time and "art0time st dents$ NUST members of staff$ visiting academics and NUST *embers of 3o ncil are eligible for membershi" of the Library. St dents and staff from other Universities$ +esearchers from both the "rivate and " blic sectors can a""ly for readershi". *embershi" is valid for a year. ).0 S'R*IC'S. The "rimary f nction of the Library is to s ""ort the academic and research activities of both staff and st dents in accordance with the University *ission Statement. ).1 Reference Services +eference staff assist sers to locate boo.s and %o rnals in the library and to access electronic reso rces. The Library "rovides access to over '# scholarly databases thro gh its membershi" of the !rogramme on the <nhancement of +esearch 1nformation 6!<+17$ a "ro%ect of the 1nternational Networ. for the Availability of Scientific ! blications 61NAS!7 and the <lectronic 1nformation for Librarians 6e1)L7$ an initiative of the :"en Society 1nstit te. The Library also "rovides access to n mero s other online databases and inde8es. A n mber of wor.stations are available in the 1nformation +eso rce 3enter to enable sers to access the Library9s :nline ! blic Access 3atalog e 6:!A37 and the 1nternet.

).% Infor+ation Literacy S,ills

The Library trains its sers in information handling s.ills to assist them to get the most o t of their library e8"eriences. The 1nformation Literacy S.ills 61LS7 Training !rogramme incl des a to r of the Library and a series of lect res on information so rces$ searching strategies$ eval ation of information and iss es on intellect al "ro"erty rights. S b%ect librarians can organi4e s"ecial s b%ect research methods seminars and library to rs for sers thro gho t the year. ) rther details are available at the +eference ,es.. ).) Inter-Library Loans Service Library Users can se the 1nterlibrary Loan Service to access reading materials that are not available in the Library$ b t may be available in libraries elsewhere. The Library "rovides the service thro gh membershi" of the So th African Bibliogra"hic Networ. 6SAB1N<T7 and the =imbabwe Universities Libraries 3onsorti m 6=UL37 networ.. The service is "rimarily intended for academics$ research staff and senior st dents. 1n some cases$ a small fee is levied for the service. 1nter0library Loans +e> est forms are available from the +eference Librarian0on0d ty or the 1nter0Library Loans Unit. ).. Short Loan/Reserve Service Boo.s in high demand can be "laced on Short Term Loan or +eserve at the recommendation of Academic staff and will be .e"t in the relevant section for one year. Boo.s in the +eserve 3ollection are for se in the library only$ while Short Term Loan Boo.s may be borrowed for ' days. Academic staff wishing to have boo.s "laced in the +eserve 3ollection and;or on Short Loan m st inform the +eader Services Librarian and com"lete the +eserve 3ard$ and are res"onsible for notifying st dents of the arrangement. ).0 Long Ter+ Loans Library materials that may be re> ired for constant se in a de"artment can be "laced on Long Term Loan at the re> est of the chair"erson of the de"artment. ).1 Reservations Service +eservations can be made for boo.s that are not immediately available in the Library thro gh the Library?s website as "atron re> est. ).2 (ast '3a+ination (a4ers !ast e8amination "a"ers are accessible on0line from the Library home"age. *ore information is available at the +eference ,es.. ).5 (hotoco4ying Service A "hotoco"ier is available in the !eriodicals Section. A small fee is levied for the service. 1n the event that the "hotoco"ier is not f nctional$ o tside "hotoco"ying can be arranged with the !eriodicals Librarian. All "hotoco"ying is s b%ect to the 3o"yright Act. ).6 7ines +eading materials borrowed from the Library sho ld be ret rned on or before the d e date. :verd e materials acc m late fines at a rate determined by the Library from time to time. ,ifferent levels of fines shall a""ly on :rdinary Loans$ Short Term Loans$ Library Use :nly;+eserved *aterial$ :verd e items 61/days7 or more and lost material.
