Course chair: Larry Baione Course Description: Instrumental lab for guitar principals emphasizing performance in the style of Pat Martino. Study of etudes and line studies as preparation for performing transcribed solos. Application of linear concepts to improvisation.
Course Objective:
Following performance of weekly assignments, you will perform at least five Pat Martino line studies through twelve positions on the guitar, perform a Martino solo transcription, and demonstrate the ability to adapt excerpts of Martino solos for use in your own improvisation.
Required Textbook: Pat Martino, Linear Expressions; Steve Kahn, Pat Martino The Early Years.
Coursework and Cousework includes weekly performed assignments, listening assignments, and midterm and Out-of-class final performance projects of solo transcriptions/improvised solos. In order to maintain Preparation: satisfactory standing in this class, approximately two and a half hours per per week of out-of-class preparation are recommended.

Final Grade Determination: Your final grade will be determined by considering the following components at the indicated weights: 20% Attendance 40% Performance of weekly assignments 20% Midterm project 20% Final project Attendance Policy: A course grade of F may result after your second absence. It is the students responsibility to initiate withdrawal proceedings prior to the W deadline. In case of doubt, ask the instructor or the Counseling Center.
Deadline for Course Withdrawal: See registration materials. The student may not initiate a W after the deadline.
Statement of Intent
Students will be performing etudes and line studies by Pat Martino as preparation for performance of transcribed solos. The class will provide an organizational approach to studying the linear improvisational style of Pat Martino. Classroom environment will give the opportunity for listening and analysis as well as applying these studies to creative improvisation.
