Cervical Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer affecting women. According to the National Institute of Health, about 12,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year in America. In the past few decades, the number of deaths from this cancer has dramatically decreased due to Pap test screenings, vaccines and research.

Quick Facts

Women should begin cervical cancer testing at age 21. Women 21 to 29 years old should have a Pap test every three years. Beginning at age 30, the preferred way to screen is with a Pap test combined with an HPV test every five years. Women who have been vaccinated against HPV should still be screened regularly. Women who are at high risk of cervical cancer because of a suppressed immune system may need to be screened more often.

January 22 marks the 41st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case. The landmark ruling established that the right of privacy stated in the 14th Amendment should extend to protect a womans decision to have an abortion during the 1st trimester of pregnancy. Although there have been significant efforts to overturn the ruling, the verdict still stands. As stated by the majority opinion in the Supreme Court If the right of privacy means anything, it is the right of the individual, married or single, to be free from unwarranted government intrusion into matters so fundamentally affecting a person as the decision whether to bear or beget a child.
