Studio Policies
Enrolment Period
At Nova Music Studios we value consistency for both student and teacher. This means that a priority is placed on ensuring students receive an adequate number of lessons during their enrolment in the studio, which allows for a valuable learning experience. The enrolment period for lessons is the length of the current NSW public school term typically 10 weeks. Enrolments are considered to carry over into subsequent school terms until such time that the student withdraws from their lesson enrolment. A student may withdraw from their current enrolment at the end of a term. Withdrawals requested mid-term will mean the forfeiture of any remaining lesson fees, lesson credits or make-up lessons for the remainder of the term. The fee charged for the terms lessons are based upon the number of weeks in the term, so it is important to be aware of this before making your lesson payments. The lesson enrolment period is based upon the NSW public school term, which is typically 10 weeks in duration, but this can vary. If youre unsure of the length or starting & finishing dates of the current school term, please refer to the board of studies website (www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au), or contact the studio and we can notify you of these details. Please be aware that even if the student is attending a non-government school that has a different term length to the current NSW public school system, the lesson enrolment period is still aligned with the NSW public school term. The number of weeks in the term begins with and includes week 1 and ends in week 10 (or 9 or 11, depending on the length of the current school term). This also includes incomplete school weeks, such as in the case of public holidays and school development days that often occur at the beginning or end of a term. For lessons that are held at a school on a day within one of these weeks, the lesson is still billed for and an alternative lesson time will be arranged either within the term or in the subsequent school holiday period.

Nova Music Studios Lesson Duration, Frequency & Times

Each lesson is 30 minutes in duration. Lessons are booked as a regular weekly timeslot. Lesson times are appointed to each student according to their teacher s current availabilities and at a time mutually agreed upon by both student and teacher. Fortnightly, 3-weekly & monthly lessons are not available, nor timeslots of any other frequency. Lessons are held for the duration of the booked timeslot, which is 30 minutes. If a student is late to their appointed timeslot, then their lesson will still finish at the end of their appointed timeslot, meaning a reduction in their lesson time. Students are therefore encouraged to be on time to their lessons, as the timeslots of subsequent students will not be altered to allow for their own late attendance. If for some reason a teacher is late for a booked timeslot, the missed time will be credited to the student in the form of an extended lesson later in the term or an additional catch-up lesson. Lessons of any duration other than 30 minutes are not offered as part of a regular scheduled lesson booking. Catch up lessons of a different duration may be requested of and organised by the teacher at their own discretion, however placement of such lessons may be subject to time restrictions. Once a lesson time is agreed upon by both student and teacher, the lesson time remains unchanged throughout the students enrolment. During the current school term no changes to the students timeslot may be made, so to make the most of your lesson booking be sure not to allow other activities to interfere with your weekly timeslot. A lesson time may be changed only at the conclusion of the current school term, to take effect in the subsequent term (if the teachers current availabilities allow).

Fee Structure
Lesson Fees & Payment Scheme
Lessons are booked in as weekly timeslots for the entirety of the term. The student is required to pay for each lesson timeslot for the duration of their enrolment. Lesson fees are charged as a single lump-sum payment for the entire term of enrolment. This term fee is to be paid in full before the commencement of lessons in each term. Lesson fees are charged for the term at a rate of $25 per lesson. The term fees below are charged according to the number of weeks per term. As previously stated, please check how many weeks the current term contains to ensure you are paying the correct fee. Term Length 9 Week Term 10 Week Term (Standard) 11 Week Term Lesson Fees $225 $250 $275

Lesson fees need to be paid in full before the commencement of lessons in each term. If the lesson fees are not paid before this time, it will result in consequences for subsequent booked timeslots, as follows: If the students lesson fees have not been received prior to the first lesson of the term, the lesson will be cancelled. The same will occur if the fees are not received by the second lesson. Lessons that are cancelled due to lesson fees not being received are still included in the term fee. If the students lesson fees have still not been received by the third scheduled lesson of the term, the student will be withdrawn from lessons and will have their booked timeslot forfeited. The lesson fees for the 3 weeks of missed lessons will be billed to the student.

Nova Music Studios Alternative Fee Structure

If for any reason you are unable to pay for a full term of lessons, a weekly payment option is available. This payment scheme is at a higher weekly rate and incurs a bond payment. If this payment scheme is chosen, you will need to inform the studio before lessons commence. This scheme may not be used in combination with the term payment method. Weekly lesson payments are charged at a rate of $30 per session. A 2-week bond payment is required, payable with the first weeks lesson fee a total of $90 payable for the first lesson. The bond payments will be used to pay for lessons that the student cancels. If both bond payments are used at any point, another bond payment will need to be paid before lessons can continue. The $90 payable in the first lesson is a one-off payment. Subsequent lessons (starting from week 2 if lessons commence in week 1) will only cost $30. The 2 credits that form the bond payment will roll-over into subsequent terms if unused. This means that if the student attends each lesson the credits will remain unused. If a student withdraws from lessons, the bond expires as such, it is recommended that students paying using this method give two weeks notice before withdrawing from lessons, so that the unused bond credits go towards the final two lessons.

Nova Music Studios Lesson Cancellations

Once a lesson time has been arranged, it is considered to be a standing weekly booking for the entirety of the term. No other students are permitted to use your booked timeslot, as it is reserved exclusively for you for the whole term and any subsequent terms (until such time as a withdrawal is submitted). This means that if you are unable to attend your pre-booked timeslot, it will still need to be paid for. Lesson fees go toward the reservation of a timeslot, and as such even if the student is unable to attend the lesson the teacher has still reserved the timeslot for that particular student, at the exclusion of all other potential students. If the teacher does not receive adequate notice of a cancellation, they are unable to make any alternative arrangements for the unusable timeslot, which justifies the requirement of the student paying for that timeslot. If a student cancels their booked timeslot, the lesson will still be charged to the student. If 48 hours notice is given for an impending absence, the student will be given the opportunity to arrange a catch-up lesson at a later date. If the teacher is absent from a lesson, the student will be given the opportunity to arrange a catch-up lesson at a later date, or a lesson credit will be given for the subsequent term fee. While a minimum of 48 hours notice is required in order to be awarded a catch-up lesson, please still notify the teacher of an absence after this time (if you have neglected to do so outside of the 48-hour time period), as it is a common courtesy that will be greatly appreciated by the teacher. If your lesson is held at a school (during school time or after-hours), please be aware that it is not the responsibility of the school to inform the teacher of potential events that may result in an absence (such as sickness, excursions, productions). It is solely the responsibility of the student (or parent/guardian) to inform the teacher of absence under any circumstance. School staff should in no way be held responsible for informing peripatetic music tutors of school events, as the school is simply a venue for lessons to be held that are otherwise arranged through an external organisation.

Nova Music Studios Catch-Up Lessons & Lesson Credit

Catch-up lessons are given in the event of a student cancelling a scheduled lesson with adequate notice (at least 48 hours before the lesson time) or if a teacher cancels a lesson. Catch-up lessons may be offered within the term or in the subsequent school holiday period. Catch-up lessons are arranged according to the teachers availability, and all reasonable efforts will be made to organise an appropriate timeslot for the catch-up. If the student is unable to make the appointed catch-up lesson time, the catch-up lesson will be forfeited. Once a catch-up lesson has been booked, it cannot be re-scheduled. If a timeslot is booked and the student can no longer attend, the catch-up lesson will be forfeited. Catch-up lessons do not carry over into subsequent terms of enrolment; the lesson must be used before the subsequent term or will be forfeited. If a teacher misses a lesson and there is no catch-up lesson available for the remainder of the term, a lesson will be credited to the students account for the subsequent terms lesson fees. The studio maintains a no-refund policy. Any unused appointments will not be refunded to the student; as outlined above, in the event of a cancellation with adequate notice a catch-up lesson will be arranged. If a student withdraws from lessons, any remaining catch-up lessons and lessons credits will be forfeited.

Additional Lessons
Additional lessons may be arranged either within a term or in the subsequent holiday period at the discretion of the teacher and according to any available timeslots they may have. Once booked, these lessons are subject to the same conditions as those included in the term enrolment. This means that if an additional lesson is booked and then cancelled without adequate notice from the student, the lesson will still be charged to the student. If these charges are left unpaid before the commencement of a subsequent term of enrolment, it may mean the cancellation of the students enrolment.

Lesson Requirements
Equipment
It is important for students to bring all required equipment to each lesson. The equipment stipulated by each teacher individually is required to ensure the appropriate education may be provided. The standard set of equipment required for students at this studio is: An A4 display folder Instrument Any music books requested by the teacher The requirements specified by each individual teacher are as follows: Vocal Lessons: USB Stick (to provide students with backing tracks) Percussion Lessons: Sticks/mallets Drumming From Top to Bottom Tom Jackson

Parental Supervision
Through many years of combined teaching experience, the teachers of this studio have found it evident that younger students that are accompanied by parents demonstrate lower levels of concentration, behavioural problems and sometimes issues with authority. It is therefore requested that parents do not remain in the lesson with their child, to avoid these issues and to assist in developing a better rapport between student and teacher. Parents are very welcome to be present during the first lesson of the students enrolment, but are then requested to simply drop off their child for subsequent lessons.

Nova Music Studios Practice

An important part of learning any instrument is a consistent commitment to practice, as without it the material learned in lesson time is quickly forgotten and has to be relearned in the following weeks lesson. As well as being counter -productive for both student and teacher, having lessons without doing any work at home defeats the purpose of paying for lessons. Practice times will vary with the students playing abilities and workload. As a guide: Students at all levels of learning should practise every day. Beginner level musicians require a minimum of 15 minutes of practice per day. Intermediate level musicians require a minimum of 30-45 minutes of practice per day. Advanced level musicians require a minimum of 60 minutes of practice per day. The teachers of Nova Music Studios will be making their best effort to encourage each student to practise consistently and effectively. Teachers will discuss with students the importance and necessity of practising consistently and can offer incentive schemes to assist with students motivation, such as practice records that offer rewards for consistent effort and timetables to assist in scheduling practice sessions. Each student is also given a Lesson Content sheet, which is placed at the front of their folder. This sheet is used by the teacher to take note of what material is being covered in each lesson, what material should be practised and general notes on performance or technique. Beyond the full extent of the studios resources, it is then the responsibility of the student to maintain an acceptable level of practice. In the case of younger students, it is of vital importance that parents play an active role in encouraging their child to practise. Parents should discuss with the student when they should be practising and ensure that they are provided with the necessary equipment and an appropriate environment in which to practise every day. Practising an instrument should take on an equal importance with homework, sporting events and other extra-curricular activities, and should not be put aside for social activities. Practice is one of the hardest elements of learning an instrument for young students, so support from parents is essential for the proper education to occur.
