Congratulation for being selected as an intern with the FREE SPIRITS.

FREE SPIRITS works with aim to improve life of rural people through continuous development through innovative thinking and meticulous working. We are expecting hard work and sincerity from you toward the work. Here is the brief description of the work that is allotted to you during the period of internship with us. You need to submit all the report to us according to schedule (well send that later) in order to complete you internship successfully. Certificate and allowances (based on the performances and conditions) will be issued to you after successful completion of you training.

TASK DEFINATION: Design a renewable energy powered and portable water pump that can provide a viable alternative to diesel-driven ones. The work plan brief is simple: design and convert a DC powered water pump from the existing AC water pump system that fits into the lifestyle and budget of India's small-scale farmers. The Present AC water pumps that are powered by diesel can deliver enough water to irrigate 1 hectare of typical Indian village produce (wheat or vegetables) from a depth of 5m. It sometimes also includes micro irrigation water delivery system. Such as a 2-3 HP Honda/kirloskar pump generally pumps the definite amount of water at the borehole (say 10 litres per second from 5m depth). Your work is to provide a viable and innovative solution of converting an existing diesel powered AC pump into efficient and functional DC water pump. 1st Stage: First of all you have to gather all the preliminary knowledge about the functioning, working and application of AC and DC pumps. You have to thoroughly study about them, their working characteristics, positive and negative aspects of pumps in term of water irrigation techniques. Starting phase will gain you basic technical knowledge about AC and DC pumps. 2nd Stage: After that you have to conduct studies regarding available system or installed systems that are commonly used in the village farmer for their basic needs. You have to make a short report of few pages including the general capacity of pumps (power or wattage rating), usage time (or working hours), manufactures, working condition, handling requirements, installation/servicing/maintenance requirements, reliability etc.. Explain briefly about all the factors and their information.

3rd Stage: # Technical work to be done in support of design and efficiency validation of the pump and design: Assuming a groundwater table at 5m or 10m depth (depending upon application), you have to suggest suitable working design for required work. Following points need to be mentioned in the work carried by you. 3D CAD drawing or model for transmission unit and motor and other accessories. Sizing of DC/ AC powered water pumps. Ergonomics/Economics and affordability (Basic price assessment). Design calculation for transmission unit, motor, distribution capacity and solar panel MATLAB based control strategies for overall control, transmission unit and motor. A PDF report explaining the details of the suggested project. Problems that could be faced in making it a practical model. Detailed final model (including all materials used and reasons) Issues being faced and solved during the work.

4th Stage: You have to make a Final Report by accumulating the work done by you till now and also embodied these following parts and explaining them briefly while designing or developing the DC Pump or (AC to DC conversion pump) kit/system:

Capability: how well does the DC pump perform compared to existing AC pumps? Viability (Design Simplicity): Is it easily usable? Does it fit into farmers lives and work habits, or will it require education? Rugged: How robust and rough the product could be? Is it suitable for village application? Feasibility: how close is the design to being a workable product? Does it require additional technological advances or development? Portable

theft prevention -- farmer can take it inside the house at night and when away can be easily used at different wells / by water merchants easy transport for demonstration and sale in local markets

at least as portable as an old school Kirloskar 5HP pump.

Robust under village climate and rural use conditions, locally serviceable
