Today marks exactly forty days since Christmas, a signicant day in the life of Joseph and Mary. Youll recall that they took Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem (right under King Herods nose) for the rite of purication and to redeem Jesus as their rstborn child. (Luke 2:22-35) Mary and Joseph were devout Jews, keeping the Law at every point, offering the sacrice necessary to redeem their rstborn. Jesus was an observant Jew likewise, not only keeping the Law, but fullling it. He was well acquainted with every aspect of the priesthood and ministry of the rabbis. As a rabbi, He fully understood the role and duties of the High Priest. While the role of a High Priest may not seem that signicant to us this morning, the more we are acquainted with the mind, structure, and faith practices of the rst century Jews, the greater well understand the richness of worship today and the greater our love for our Savior. - Dr. Dan Sharp
