EITH BEBBINGTON wants to leave Latics. And the directors don't intend
standing in his way-subject, of course, to the transfer fee which any club
offers for his services being within the realms of reason.
It is always disturbing for a club to have an unsettled player. But in Keith's
case the reason for discontent is understandable. He feels that after three very
mixed-up years at Boundary Park it is time to aim at a final fling in a better grade
of soccer.
You cannot fairly criticise any man for
'
wanting to improve himself and this is why
the Club have decided lo accept the situation
in phlegmatic fashion. Manager Jack
Rowley has presented his point, but the
;l determination of the former Stoke City
forward has not been broken down.
True, a club cannot be dictated to by its
players, but the Board have analysed the
situation and believe that on this occasion
there would be no useful purpose served by
standing in the player's way. "We assent to
his transfer" said the Club statement
"because we feel that in this particular case
it would be wrong to stand in the way of a
player who wants to be back in a better
grade of football."
What is to stop any player putting forward
, that same reason? Nuthrn~, absolutely
nothing. But as one irrate manager said at
on6 time in the vast to his temperamental
young star : "You want a transfer . . . who
( the hell do you think will buy you".
Now Keith gets the chance to see whether
any other club feels he will fit into better
status, In this instance I would say there's
every ~hance. Certainly from the displays
ai

he put in for Latics last year-and in my
own opinion, from the ability he has always
proved to possess-there should be no
serious shortage of takers.
His loss, when it happens, will be a sad
one for Latics. Keith, now 26-years-old, has
showed himself extremely capable in a mid-
field role (which he occupied for a long
I stretch last year) and just as dangerous when
operat~ng as a striker, the evidence con-
tained in his place as top scorer last season.
No club can afford to part with its better
players. But neither can a club make a
happy mamiage with an unhappy partner-
and Keith's attitude has not suddenly
developed overnight.
H e came to Latics from Stoke at the start
~f the 1966-67 campaign firmly convinced
that better things lay ahead. We were all
convinced. But football remains the greatest
&amble of all time, and the hopes never
materialised.
Keith never really materialised as the
wing forward threat he was purchased as.
HIS form fluctuated wildly at times. UntiI
last year, determined to make an impression,
he was the most imposing forward I wit-
nessed in the Third Division. Little wonder
the fans recognised that Keith had finally
produced the goods he is capable of and
voted him the Player of the Year.
So, with the mixed-up seasons behind
him, Keith feels in the mood for better
things.
It means that Latics have two players
w
open-to-offers. Remember, utility forward
Reg Elore, who has been occupying the
right wing berth for most of the past year,
was also transfer-listed several months ago
-though not at his own request. The Club
are prepared to llsten to offers for Reg, and
at the time of writing there was hint that
some developments could take place.
But today isn't all departure news. The
coaching staff has been increased with the
addition of John Dyson, who has been
handling junior team affairs in the current
absence of Peter Seddon on holiday.
John has had a lof to do in the past with
Chadderton F.C., the local amateur club,
and has had a long-standing affection for
Latics. Probably resulting from the fact
that his father, Jimmy Dyson, was a
Boundary player in the Thirties when he
was known to all and sundry as the Club's
penalty king.
Now ~t'sJohn's turn to be spot-on (ouch.)
He wilI assist in a coaching capacity and
also play a prominent part in the scouting
section, utilising the many local contacts he
has in junior football. We hope he has a
happy stay.

good write-up, which brings us to our
Lancashire Senior . Cup-tie against
Liverpool at Boundary Park on Tues-
day last. Although certain reporters
were at the game, only two National
papers had anything in about the
match.
The match was a very good one, with
plenty of good football and our boys
did not let big money players show
their values and our two youngsters,
Fitton in goal and Graham Schofield at
Centre Half, had very good games, and
if they keep u p their present improving
form, they will be knocking at the first
team door, s o you see our youth policy
is paying off.
In last Saturday's "A" team game
against Crewe at home, I played five
15-year-olds, four 16-year-olds, a 17-
year-old and an 18-year-old, and they '
did very well to beat the visitors 5-2,
whilst in the reserve side that beat
Morecambe Reserves at home 2-0, we
had two 16-year-olds.
This youth policy is a long term
policy, which should pay off in the
future, and it's the first team that has
to do well to encourage you supporters
to come and watch them, and so give
the Club the cash to carry on, and we
must have your support if the Club is
to prosper. A winning team gets a
good following here in Oldham, not
like Blackburn, who are doing very
wsll, but still cannot attract much more
than fourteen thousand fans. I am
sure that if we were in their position
we would have bigger attendances.
My final words are to you loyal fans
who came to the Tuesday Cup-tie and
gave the team such wonderful vocaf
support, please start off where you left
off when the boys run o i t tont to the
pitch for today's game and may-you be
cheering them off the field1 m c e again
at the end- qf th,e 90 minutes.. -
