CLOSING THE GAP IN BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE

Affecto helps Danfoss merge outdated, separate BI systems and upgrade to new platform

Business Intelligence is all about providing relevant data to support the business. Sometimes it makes sense for large corporations to deploy more than one BI system to meet highly specific needs from different business units. But as the business evolves, each system as well as the overall BI architecture must be able to adapt to and keep up with the ever-changing demands. This was the challenge Danfoss faced following the implementation of a new corporate strategy: Core and Clear. Until this point, the globally recognised Danish manufacturer of valves, radiator thermostats, pumps, drives and a range of other products had four separate BI systems based on older SAP Business Warehouse versions, one for each business segment. Niels Arne Jrgensen, Senior Director, Financial Reporting Systems at Danfoss, explains: We run SAP wide and deep across our business and BI is a significant part of that. Previously each business segment had its own SAP BW, its own BI team and its own way of using BI. As a result the data from one segment were not immediately comparable with data from another segment.

UNIFIED BI SOLUTION Focusing on the clear part of the new corporate strategy it was decided to implement a unified BI solution across the entire organisation. The fragmented BI landscape was to become a thing of the past. A problem was that Business Intelligence as a concept is not always highly prioritised by the top management. In the early phases of the project we lacked the resources to undertake the project, says Niels Arne Jrgensen.

It became clear quite quickly that we would benefit from Affectos expertise. They know the technology and what possibilities the new version of SAP BW offers and how to efficiently execute BI projects Niels Arne Jrgensen, Senior Director, Financial Reporting Systems at Danfoss

ONE SINGLE TRUTH Nearing completion, Danfoss has successfully harmonised its BI architecture and is decommissioning the older systems, one step at a time. Almost all pending BI projects have been completed in time. Now we have a unified solution built on a modern platform that gives us a degree of transparency across the entire business that we didnt have before. You could say that we have one single truth instead of different versions of sales figures, costs etc., says Niels Arne Jrgensen. Insufficient resources in terms of manpower were one obstacle Niels Arne Jrgensen and his team needed to negotiate. Another was lack of in-depth knowledge in specific areas. We knew we had some gaps in our BI knowledge. In the short term we also needed more people on the job, says Niels Arne Jrgensen. The solution to both challenges was to bring in a team of specialists from Affecto to assist, and the joint Danfoss/Affecto team set out to establish a framework for project management and execution. Harmonising the four older business warehouses into a unified SAP Business Warehouse based on the latest version was a key challenge. It became clear quite quickly that we would benefit from Affectos expertise. They know the technology and what possibilities the new version of SAP BW offers and how to efficiently execute BI projects, Niels Arne Jrgensen says. Affecto also helped Danfoss build parts of a central Business Intelligence Competence Centre (BICC) and Niels Arne Jrgensen is confident he and his team are well equipped to meet Danfoss future BI demands: We see increased performance, easier maintenance and an updated platform for developing future BI projects. And we have gained knowledge in new areas by working with Affecto. Our next step is to explore what we can achieve with building dashboards.
