Excavation of Acceptable Materials

5.3.1 Earth material which will be classified as acceptable material and conforming to

specification requirements will be excavated using Excavators.

5.3.2

The excavated acceptable material will be transported directly to areas for use in
forming embankments for the roadways, connecting roads, ramps and approaches; in constructing sub grade and shoulders; backfilling around structures or for any other purpose necessary for the completion of the project in accordance with the drawings.

5.3.3

If the material observed as weathered rock or granular material it would be detailed to use as a gravel mat and rock replacement activities in the soft ground treatment works. Special care will be taken to identify the nature of the soil while on excavation too.

MS-3: Method Statement for Earth Work

The dump trucks used to transport the excavated materials will minimise their average hauling distance by arranging the closest fill location simultaneously. The works are envisaged such that no unnecessary double handling is involved. Notwithstanding,
5.3.5

In areas where the situation arises, excess material will be stockpiled temporarily within the ROW or alternatively in selected areas adjacent to the site, approved by the Engineer. Excavation will be undertaken down to the approved lines and levels.

5.3.6 If the sub grade level is reached within the acceptable material strata, the bottom layer will be compacted to the density specified (Refer specification section 2.2, Clause 3.7). If material at the bottom is found to be soft and fail to compact to the

required density and CBR values, and then seek for further instruction of the Engineer to further excavation to a required depth md replace with Selected Material, or as otherwise instructed. Detail of such additional works will be recorded jointly. If hard rock is reached and eicavation needs to continue in the new strata, unclassified excavation will be halt in those areas.
A request will be made to the Engineer to carry out a joint survey of the area where

excavation is completed, for the purpose of measurements.

5.4

Excavation of Unacceptable Materials-Class U-1 & U-2

5.4.1 Earth material which will be identified on investigations as unacceptable for

embankment will be excavated using excavators. Such materials will be transported directly to disposal areas approved by the Engineer as much as possible to avoid double handling. Unlikely, if there is no such location in close proximity temporary stocking would be done within the ROW but outside the construction areas. The selection and management of disposal areas will be as follows. Before the disposal of waste materials or selected vegetation, a request will be made to the Engineer for approval of a location for disposal when such a location is in the ROW. Alternatively, if an area outside the site is considered, the necessary steps will be taken to obtain approval &om land owners and of the CEA. Disposal of all unacceptable materials other than the materials which can process for re-use, and other foreign matter will be removed to the approved locations with the help of excavators, dump trucks, JCB,tractor and manpower or other

If any material is identified as may be suitable to use in permanent works after making some process, that would be stockpiled separately and arrange the chemical or mechanical process and re check the properties to make use for fill areas which in this stage would directly transport to the filling locations. 5.4.3 To minimise hauling distances, every attempt is made to identify the disposal sites within close area to the excavation points.
5.4.2 5.4.4

If any borrow areas are observed in close areas to the excavation, the unsuitable material will be transported and stockpiled on the edge of borrow area for later backfilling. Once excavation of the borrow pit is cogplete, the stockpiled spoil material will be dozed to the pit and topsoil will be spread over evenly.

MS-3: Method Statement for Earth Work

5.4.5 Engineer's inspection would be requested in prior to the excavation of unacceptable materials in the particular area. 5.4.6 After the completion of excavation of unsuitable material within a particular area a request will be made to the Engineer to carry out a joint Cross Sectional survey of the area for the purpose of measurements.

5.5 Excavation -Rock Boulders 5.5.1 Boulders as referred in the section 2.2,clause 2.7 of the specification that are having a solid volume greater than 0.251113 and smaller to 1.0m3 will be arranged to remove. Joint measurements will be recorded in every such boulder independently and place an "X" mark to identify the measured once. Excavator will be used for removal of these boulders from its location and either directly transported to the locations identified in the soft ground areas or stockpiled in closer areas to use in other locations. Boulders which are found greater than to the above requirement are also jointly measured with different identification in which later be broken into pieces using giant breaker or blasting. 5.6 Excavation -Hard Rock In accordance with morphology of the rock and our assessment of its general characteristics, excavation by blasting with explosives will be required, however all blasting will be limited to daytime only. The location of the areas to be quarried would be determined through our analysis of the contract drawings and geo-technical information. For the details of the blasting procedure please refer o w Construction Procedure for Blasting at Quarry Sites and within ROW, which is annexed to this Method Statement. Once the blasting operation is completed, Giant Breakers and Rock Hammers will be used to break the rock boulders into pieces as required for embankment filling and crusher plants. The muck will be generally being transported directly to areas for use in soft ground treatment works in forming embankment foundations. Joint survey will be requested from the Engineer after completion of all rock excavations and as built Cross Section drawings would be prepared accordingly for the purpose of calculating the excavated rock volume. 5.7 Embankment 5.7.1 General Embankment work will follow the site clearance works described in the Method Statement No. 1 for site clearance. All top soil materials would be removed as instructed before starts earth work operations.

MS-3: Method Statement for Earth Work

In order to minimize number of transport equipment and hence the cost of operation, hauling of fill material between uncMfied excavation / h m w excavation and embankment will be planned in such a way as to have the shortest possible hading distance
5.7.2

Embankments on Natural Ground When the natural ground is within a height of 1.5 m from the sub grade elevation, all the organic matter will be removed and ripped off the surface with tynes attached to the ripper of the dozer or tractor. That would be compacted to specified requirements. If the depth is exceeding the 1.5m, remaining sods will be disc thoroughly and compact. When specified in the Contract, or directed by the Engineer, the slopes will be benched before the embankment is placed.

Toe lines of the embankment with necessary slopes will be set it-out on the ground.
keeping 0.250m extension in horizontal plane on either side. The first of this kind of embankment section would be considered as a trial to ascertain the required compaction efforts and layer thicknesses etc., Material derived h m excavation of acceptable material including weathered rock as well as any other borrow excavation, which confirms the suitability on canyhg out the specified tests in section 8 of the specification would be transported to the fill location. Initial layer in this instance would be spread to a variable un-compacted thichess but not exceeding 400mm to facilitate a levelled surface on top to form up the subsequent layers. Next layers there onwards will be un-compact thickness of 250mm.until reach up to the sub grade elevations. Density requirement detailed in table 2.2.1 of the specification would be maintained in each layer. Seperate triab would be arranged for each type of compacting equipment to get the layer thickness increased while processing the constructions and the extended portion would be trimmed off at the time of slope protection works or grassing. If necessary, moisture will be added with sprinklers attached to the water tankers, to bring the moisture content of fill material close to the optimum. Water will be thoroughly incorporated into the material, which is to be compacted, by the use of ploughs, discs or other methods. The material laid will be flattened with dozers and compacted with 9-10 ton vibrating rollers.

Swampy ground conditions which are not covered under any of Soft Ground Treatment method is to be filled d i i t l y with accepted general fill materials. Setting out and all embankment constructions are similar to item 8.2 except the thickness of initial layer. Initial layer in this regard would be 500600mm to make sufficient to support the equipments. (Refer Sec-2.2, Clause. 3.6 of specification) Compaction over this layer to be carried out until it satisfies that no ruts are visible under loaded hauling equipments.
