1. (a) What do you understand by “principal planes” and “principal stresses”?


(b) Using Mohr’s circle of stresses find the magnitude of principal stresses and the
location of principal planes in the case of normal stresses of 50MPa (tensile)
and 25MPa (compressive) acting on mutually perpendicular planes having
shearing stress of 20MPa. Find also the magnitude and direction of max
shear stress. [6+10]
2. 3000 H.P. has to be transmitted at 60 R.P.M. If the safe allowable shear stress is
100N/mm2 find the necessary dia. of a solid shaft. If a hollow section is used with
its internal dia, = 3/4 of the external dia. find the saving in weight per metr length.
Density of material = 90kN/m3 . [16]
3. An R.S.Tee-section, 150mm wide × 75mm deep, thickness of flange 9mm, thickness
of web 8.4mm, is used as a strut, 3 metre 4 long, ends hinged.Calculate the safe
axial load by Rankine?s formula, using a factor of safety of 3. Rankines constants,
f c = 315N/mm2 ; a = 1/ 7500. [16]
4. A horizontal strut 3m long is of-hollow circular section 16cm external dia. And
internal dia. 14cm. It carries an end thrust of 300kN along with a u.d.l of 5kN/m.
Assuming the ends as hinged and taking the self weight also into account, calculate
the max. stress induced in the section (Density = 78.5kN/m3 ). [16]
5. A short hollow cylindrical C.I. Column is 240 mm external and 180 mm internal
diameter. In casting, the bore got eccentric so that the thickness varies from 20mm
at one end to 40 mm at the other. If the column carries a load of 600 KN along the
axis of the bore, calculate the extreme intensities of stress induced in the section.

6. A timber joist, 100 mm wide and 200 mm deep, is freely supported over a span of 4
meters. It is subjected to a bending moment of 30,000 cm kg at the central section,
the trace OY’ of the plane of loading being inclined at 300 to the principal axis
OY. Locate the neutral axis and calculate the maximum bending stress induced.
If the bending moment is due to a total load of 600 kg uniformly distributed over
the whole span calculate the deflection. Take E = 105 kg/cm2 . [16]
7. (a) Where do you use beams curved in plan?
(b) A circular beam is loaded uniformly and supported an symmetrically placed
Columns. If W is the load per unit length, R, the radius, derive expressions for
S.F B.M and tossional moment at a point P, at an angle φ from one support.

1. Using

(a) max. shear strain energy theory and


(b) max. strain theory find the magnitude of minor principal stress in a steel
member,

if at a point the major principal stress is 20N/mm2 (tensile) and the minor
principal stress is compressive. Take Poisson’s ratio = 1/3. [4+12]

2. Find the percentage saving in material if a hollow shaft of the same material is to
replace a solid shaft transmitting the same torque the internal dia = 3/4 of external
dia. [16]

3. An R.S.Tee-section, 150mm wide × 75mm deep, thickness of flange 9mm, thickness


of web 8.4mm, is used as a strut, 3 metre 4 long, ends hinged.Calculate the safe
axial load by Rankine?s formula, using a factor of safety of 3. Rankines constants,
f c = 315N/mm2 ; a = 1/ 7500. [16]

(b) A horizontal strut of length L, having hinged ends, carries an axial compres-
sive load P, and central vertical load W. Derive expression for max values of
deflection, B.M. and stress. [4+12]

5. A short hollow cylindrical C.I. Column is 240 mm external and 180 mm internal
diameter. In casting, the bore got eccentric so that the thickness varies from 20mm

(a) The product of inertia about the axes XX and YY;


(b) The directions of the principal axes;
(c) The moments about the principal axes.

If the angle section is used as a freely supported beam on a span of 1 m with the 80
mm leg vertical, find the maximum bending stress and the magnitude and direction

of the central deflection caused by a vertical point -load of 6 kN at the centre of
the span. Take E = 2× 105 N/mm2 . [16]

1. (a) Explain the max. shear stress theory.


(b) Using the same calculate the factor of safety of a stress system have principal
stresses of 120 MPa (tensile), 60 MPa (tensile) and 30 MPa (compressive).
The limit of proportionality of the steel is 300 MPa. [6+10]

2. A closely coiled helical spring is to have a stiffness of 10 N/cm of compression under


a max. load of 50N and max. shearing stress of 125N/mm2 . The solid length of
spring is 45mm. Find the dia. of wire, mean dia of spring and the number of coils
required. Take N = 7 × 104 N/mm2 . [16]

6. (a) What do you understand by centroidal principal axes and principal moments
of inertia.
(b) Determine the principal moments of inertia for an unequal angle section 80 ×
60 × 10mm. [8+8]

7. A semi circular beam of radius R, is supported on 3 equally spaced columns. If W


is the load per unit length of the beam, derive expressions for B.M and twisting
moments at any point P. and hence at supports. [16]

1. At a point is an elastic material there are normal stresses of 35MPa (tensile) and
25MPa (compressive) on two mutually perpendicular planes, accompanied by shear-
ing stresses of 10MPa on the same planes. The loading on the material is increased
so that the stresses reach values of K times those given. If the max. direct stress is
not to exceed 80MPa and the max shear stress is not to exceed 50 MPa, find the
max value of K. [16]

2. A weight of 2500 N is dropped on to a closely coiled compression spring with 15


coils. Calculate the height of drop before striking so that the spring is compressed
by 20 cm. The dia. of rod is 25mm and mean dia. of coil is 200mm. Take
N = 9 × 104 N/mm2 . [16]
