Quiz

A. Read the passage. Then choose the correct answer in parentheses.

The Rockaway or the Sheldon?
Marlon and Carla Amato are planning a vacation at Sandy Beach, Virginia. They both enjoy the sunshine and the ocean, but they are having trouble agreeing on whether to stay at a motel called the Rockaway or a fancy hotel called the Sheldon. Marlon thinks that the Motel Rockaway is where they should stay. The thing he likes best about it is that its right on the beach. They can walk out their door and be in the water in the water in less than a minute. The Sheldon, on the other hand, is four blocks from the beach. The Rockaway also has a great seafood restaurant with the freshest fish in town. In addition, the rooms are very large and have big flat screen TVs. Carla would rather stay at the Hotel Sheldon. Its a new ten-story building and all the rooms have a balcony. The rooms arent large, but the views from the balcony are magnificent. At the Rockaway, people have to keep their drapes closed because the rooms are right on the beach and people can look in so she says theres basically no view there. She agrees that the Sheldon is a lot more expensive, but she thinks it worth it. One major point for her is that it is air conditioned and the Rockaway isnt. Mario agrees that the Sheldon has some advantages, but he still prefers the Rockaway. For one thing, he likes having the car nearby. That way they can just jump in and make a quick trip to the store when they need to. At the Sheldon, they have to wait for the attendant to get their car from the garage and they have to pay him each time they use their car. Also, there is an outdoor pool at the Rockaway. They can swim and sit in the shade and have a drink at the pool and then easily go to their room for a nap or shower when they want to. If they stay at the Sheldon, they have to sit in the sun at the beach all day and wait until walk all the way back to their hotel to take a shower or a nap. Carla can agree with some of what Marlon says, but theres one big difference that is really important to her. At the Sheldon there are very few children, and the ones that are there are very quite. At the Rockaway, there are lots of children and they may a lot of noise. She says, When Im on vacation, I want to have peace and quiet. It may take quite a while for Carla and Marlon to come to an agreement. 1. Which place is nearest to the beach? (the Rockaway / the Sheldon) 2. Who is bothered by noisy children? (Marlon / Carla) 3. Globalization ---

Quiz

A. Read the passage. Then choose the correct answer in parentheses.

The History of Globalization
You may think that globalization is strictly a modern phenomena. Although it has expanded greatly in the past 50 years, its actually been going on for many centuries. For example, during the Islamic Golden Age from 700 to 1200 AD, Muslim traders and explorers established an early form of global economy across parts of the Mideast, Europe, Asia and Africa. This resulted in the free exchange of goods, knowledge and technology. After Ghengis Khan was declared ruler of the Mongol Empire in 1206, he began a series of wars which resulted in more and more lands coming under his control. Starting in central Asia, he took over many of the lands formerly controlled by Islamic leaders. At one point, the Mongol Empire stretched all the way from Germany to Japan. This spread the sharing of goods and knowledge throughout the Old World. While it didnt result in a single, unified society, it did bring about greater communication and cooperation among the people living in the area. Beginning in the late 1400s and continuing throughout the 16th century, the Spanish and Portuguese began explorations and trade ventures that linked the cultures and economies with those of many other parts of the world including Africa, South America North America and southern and eastern Asia. This was the first major trade-based form of globalization. Their focus was on the Far East and their original goal was to establish trade routes and set the prices of goods. In 1600, the British East India Company, which is often called the first multinational corporation, was established. It regulated trade between England and the India subcontinent. Soon after, in 1602, the Dutch East India Company established a similar business. The British company was unique in that it was the first to issue shares of stock so that people outside the company could own part of the company. This helped speed up the spread of globalization by making more money available for the expansion of international businesses. 1. Globalization began (about 50 / over 1000) years ago. 2. During the Islamic Golden Age, globalization reached (the Americas / Europe). 3. Genghis Khan was (an Islamic / a Mongol) ruler. 4. Unit 4

Money, Money, Money ---

Quiz

A. Read the passage. Then choose the correct answer in parentheses.

How Money Makes Money
Most people earn money by going out to work every day. But there are other ways of making money such as putting it in a bank or investing it in stocks, bonds or mutual funds. Bonds When you buy a bond, you are lending money to the company that issues the bonds. The loan is for a specific amount of time. For example, you might lend a construction company money for three years and get a 4% guaranteed return. That means you get all your money back plus an additional 4% at the end of three years. In addition to being used to finance business ventures, bonds are issued by cities, states and even the federal government. The federal bonds are the safest. Stocks When you buy a stock, you are actually buying part ownership in a company. If the company is successful, you can get your original investment back plus a percentage of the companys profit. If the company is not successful, you might not get all of your original investment back. The reason people invest in stocks is that the often pay back more than bonds do. However, stocks are a riskier investment. Mutual Funds Mutual funds allow groups of investors to put their money together and buy a variety of stocks and bonds. Because a mutual fund invests in many different stocks and/or bonds, there is less risk involved. For example, if one stock goes down, another usually goes up. By owning a wide variety of stocks, a mutual fund investor is protected from big losses. 1. When you buy (stocks / bonds) you own a piece of the company. 2. You get a guaranteed rate of return with (stocks / bonds). 3. (Stocks / Mutual Funds) are safer than bonds. 4. (City / Federal) bonds are the safest investment. 5. Product Placement
When you hear the word advertising you probably think of TV and radio promotions for new cars, and newspaper and magazine ads for clothing and furniture. However, you probably dont even notice one of the most effective types of advertising while you are viewing itproduct placement. Product placement takes place in TV shows and movies when a character uses a brand name product and the brand is clearly displayed so that viewers can see it. For example, a character might drive a Cadillac or drink Coke or use an I-Pod. Advertisers have found that when this happens, the sales of the product usually go up, sometimes a lot! When the cute space alien was given Reeses Pieces in the 1984 movie ET, this little-known candy gained immediate popularity. There are three ways product placement happens in the movies: It is accidental. A certain product is just used because it fits the characters personality. It is arranged and the product itself serves as payment for showing it in the movie. For example, a pizza companys product is shown and the company supplies free pizza to everyone on the set while the movie is being made. It is arranged and the movie company receives money from the pizza company. Overdoing product placement is avoided at all costs. If a product is shown too many times in the movie, or too many different products are shown, viewers become aware of it, realize its an advertisement and become turned off to the products which are interrupting their entertainment experience. Sometimes a product is created to fit with a movie that is being made. A car called the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon was created in conjunction with the movie, Tomb Raider. The car was an advertisement for the movie, and the movie an advertisement for the car. So who was doing the product placement, the movie company or the car company? _____ 1. Magazines use product placement in their stories. _____ 2. For product placement to be effective the brand name must be obvious. _____ 3. A character drinking from a Coke can is an example of product placement. _____ 4. The movie ET was made in 1984. _____ 5. The product placement in the movie ET involved a certain brand of car. _____ 6. Companies always pay money for the placement of their product in a movie. _____ 7. A. Read the blog. Then choose the correct answer in parentheses.

Ritas Bolg April 10th Smart Shopping
I lost my part-time job six weeks ago and Ive been learning how to spend less money. First I decided to cut down on how much I spent on food. I figured out that even very cheap fast food costs more than the same food prepared at home. So I stopped eating out at all. I also started buying a lot of things on sale at the supermarket. For example, if they have too much broccoli on hand, the pile it all in one place and put a big Sale sign on it and lower the price. Coupons also help a lot. I pick up the coupon flyer when I enter the store and figure out how to use the coupons to buy cheap sale items that I can turn into delicious meals. It takes some imagination, but it saves me a lot of money. Ive also stopped buying magazines and newspapers. I discovered that I can read them in the library while Im there. I also use their Internet service to look for jobs. Another thing Ive found I can get for free is movies. The local library shows movies every Friday and Sunday afternoon. They are often popular movies from the past couple of years that I didnt get a chance to see. I always enjoy them. The thing I enjoy most about shopping on the cheap is finding unusual clothing items. Ive started going to thrift stores where they sell second-hand clothes. They always wash everything carefully and the prices are unbelievable! A $200 coat thats only a year old might sell for $20. Another source of cheap clothing is outlet stores. They carry brand-new clothes at really low prices. When department stores cant sell everything they order, they return some of it to the manufacturer. Then the manufacturer sells it at an outlet at a very big discount. Sometimes an item is still selling for a high price at a department store while the outlet is offering it at 25% or even 50% off! I think Ill continue shopping this way even after I get a new job. 1. Rita lost her job __________ (two / several) weeks ago. 2. Fast food costs __________ (more / less) that food cooked at home. 3. Rita buys a lot of __________ (broccoli / sale items) these days. 4. She finds food coupons in the __________ (newspaper / store). 5. Food for Thought ---

Quiz

A. Read the article. Then circle the correct information in parentheses to complete the sentences.
Is There Enough Food for Everyone?
Some researchers are saying that the earth is currently not able to produce enough to feed everyone. This means that some people will just have to go hungry. Studies suggest that we need to start producing more food in order to minimize hunger. However, there is another side to the story. According to one study, the world produces enough grain (wheat, rice, etc.) to provide every human being with 3,500 calories a day. That amount of food would make most people fat. This measure does not even include the fruits, vegetables, meat and milk that are produced. If you add these in, each person would have 4.3 lbs. of food a day. The amount of food produced in the last 35 years has grown 16% faster than the population of the earth. The problem is not a lack of food, but that the food doesnt get to the people who need it. In order to get higher prices, businesses sometimes stockpile grain rather than selling it. In addition, poor people often cant afford to buy the food that is for sale in their area. Although we think that most people without food are living in countries with food shortages, that isnt always true. One study showed that 78% of the children who arent getting enough food are living in countries with a food surplus. Another surprising fact is that many countries in which people are hungry export more food than they import. For example, one report says that over 200 million Indians go hungry every day. However, in one recent year India exported 625 million dollars worth of wheat and over a billion dollars worth of rice. China, with its huge population, sets a good example for feeding its people. Somehow, it manages to feed most of its people fairly well while using on 25% as much crop area per person as is used in the United States. This is all food for thought. 1. The writer believes that the earth ____________ (can / cant) produce enough food to feed everyone. 2. There is enough ____________ (meat and milk / grain) so that everyone could take in 3,500 calories a day. 3. The food supply has grown ____________ (slower / faster) than the population. 4. The word stockpile means ____________ (keep / sell) 5. One study says that ____________ (16 / 78) percent of hungry children live in countries with plenty of food to go around. 6. Over ____________ (200 / 625) million Indians dont get enough to eat. 7. In a recent year, India exported over a billion dollars of ____________ (wheat / rice). 8. How to Save Water
As the population of the world grows, food is not the only resource we need to pay attention to. Water is also becoming scarce in some parts of the world and it may become an even bigger problem for all of us in the near future. Here are some water saving tips. In the House Turning off the water while you brush your teeth can save four gallons a minute. Thats about 200 gallons a week per person. Imagine how much water a whole family could save! Limiting your shower to five minutes also saves waterabout 1000 gallons a month. And waiting until you have a full load for the washing machine can save 600 gallons a month. You can even save water by being careful how you drink it. Instead of running the tap to get cold water, keep a container of cold water in the refrigerator. Outside the House Did you know that some plants require a lot more water than others? For example, Shasta Daisies grow well with almost no water. The more low-water plants you have, the less often youll need to water them. Also, always water early in the morning before the sun rises so that the water sinks down into the soil before the suns heat can evaporate it. Water also evaporates quickly (and can even blow away) on windy days. You can conserve water by watering only when the winds not blowing. Another way to save water outside is to build a patio and some walkways in your yard. This creates attractive spaces that dont have to be watered. 1. Turning off the water while you brush your teeth can save __________ (4 / 200) gallons a week. 2. By taking a five-minute shower you can save __________ (250 / 1000) gallons of water a week. 3. Washing only when the machine is full of clothes can save __________ (600 / 1000) gallons of water a month. 4. Putting containers of water in the refrigerator __________ (saves / wastes) water. 5. Shasta daisies require __________ (very little / a lot of) water. 6. You should water outdoor plants in the early __________ (morning / afternoon). 7. New Products from Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology works in materials that are so small we cant see them. However, the changes that this scientific breakthrough is bringing about are becoming more and more obvious. Every day new applications of this technology are turning into new and useful products. Sunscreen Sunscreen is used to protect the skin from sunburn. Traditional zinc oxide formulas cover the skin with a white coating. Nanotech sunscreen uses the same compound but the particles are so small that they appear colorless and the coating is invisible on the skin. Self-cleaning Glass One company makes glass that cleans itself. When light strikes the glass, tiny bits called nanoparticles break down and lift dirt off the surface. At the same time the glass has been given a treatment that makes water spread evenly across the surface. The combination of these two actions keeps the glass clean. Clothing Two types of nanoparticles are used to improve the quality of clothing. One type is similar to a sunscreen and helps protect the skin under the clothing from sunburn. The other creates tiny hairs on the surface of the cloth which helps keep liquids from sinking in. This helps make the cloth stainresistant. No-scratch Coatings Scientists have discovered how to combine aluminum silicate nanoparticles with other materials to make scratch-resistant coatings. They are used to protect the surfaces of everything from cars to eyeglasses and work much better than the traditional polymer-only coatings. _____ 1. Nanotech sunscreen uses zinc oxide. _____ 2. Nanotech sunscreen appears white on the skin. _____ 3. Self-cleaning glass never has dirt on the surface. _____ 4. Self-cleaning glass can absorb water. _____ 5. Specially treated clothing can prevent sunburn. _____ 6. Tiny hairs on the surface of clothing make it sun-resistant. _____ 7. Polymer coatings help prevent scratches. _____ 8. Some Cell Phone Basics
Almost everyone has a cell phone these days. Its important to keep you phone in good condition so you can take advantage of all its features. Here are some things to remember. First, if you have a regular cell phone, its good to discharge the batteries completely and then recharge them. But for power hungry Smartphones, you shouldnt wait for it to fully drain. Always keep your phone in a cool and dry place. Extreme temperatures and moisture can damage it. And get yourself a good cell phone case to hold your phone when traveling and always keep it clean by using a microfiber cloth that is made especially for LCD screens and plastic surfaces. Early cell phones had built-in address books, but they werent able to perform many of the other functions of todays models. For example, they couldnt provide call waiting or call blocking. An important change came when GSM (Global Systems for Mobile Communication) technology came along. GSM phones allow the user to send text messages and connect to the Internet. They also have an electronic identity card inside that can be moved to a new phone when necessary. The newest cell system is called the 3g system. Although an older cellular system, called 2g, can send multimedia files, it is not as fast as the 3g technology. Bluetooth technology has become very popular of late. The Bluetooth system allows electronic devices to connect up with each other. For example, when the base unit broadcasts signals to a headset, a cell phone user can talk without having to hold onto the phone. However, there are many other applications. For example, Bluetooth can connect a computer to a printer without wires. It also allows players to use wireless controls to play computer games. The name comes from King Bluetooth of Denmark who helped unite Denmark and Norway. The name Bluetooth was chosen because it also helps bring things together. 1. The batteries in a Smartphone ___________ (should / shouldnt) be completely discharged. 2. Always keep your phone in a ___________ (warm / cool) place. 3. Quiz

A. Read the article and answer the questions. Write T for true and F for false.
A Very Special Robot
Weve all seen humanoid robots in the movies or on TV. Most of them are created as part of the story line and only appear to function independent of human control. However, there is one robot that does a fine job on its own and is truly special. His name is ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) and he is the product of more than 20 years of work by the Honda Motor Company. ASIMO is the first robot that can walk independently and climb stairs. Because he has human-like hands, he can operate light switches, open and close doors, carry objects and push a cart. In order to get him to walk well, researchers studied insect, animal and human legs. While humans can move their necks, arms and legs in many different directions, robots have less freedom. Engineers build in degrees of freedom. One degree of freedom is, for example, up and down or back and forth. ASIMO has three degrees of freedom in his neck, seven in each arm and six in each leg. This enables him to have humanlike movements. ASIMOs vision system consists of two video cameras for eyes. His eyes can detect more than one object at a time and determine how far away an object is. He can also recognize faces and understand hand signals that have been programmed into his memory. ASIMO also has three microphones in his head. They allow him to hear what people are saying to him. However, they also have another important function. The sounds of voices picked up by these microphones are used by the robot to determine where the person is standing so he can turn and face them. This adds to ASIMOs eerily human appearance. Engineers are continuing to refine his abilities, believing that someday that many of us will want to have a helper robot like him in our own homes. _____ 1. Movie robots function without human operators. _____ 2. ASIMO was created by a university research program. _____ 3. ASIMO is able to climb stairs by himself. _____ 4. ASIMO is able to turn on a light switch. _____ 5. Researchers studied older robots while designing ASIMOs legs. _____ 6. ASIMOs legs have seven degrees of freedom. _____ 7. ASIMO can see only one object at a time. _____ 8. ASIMO knows how to turn toward a person who is speaking to him.
