Product Placement
When you hear the word advertising you probably think of TV and radio promotions for new cars, and newspaper and magazine ads for clothing and furniture. However, you probably dont even notice one of the most effective types of advertising while you are viewing itproduct placement. Product placement takes place in TV shows and movies when a character uses a brand name product and the brand is clearly displayed so that viewers can see it. For example, a character might drive a Cadillac or drink Coke or use an I-Pod. Advertisers have found that when this happens, the sales of the product usually go up, sometimes a lot! When the cute space alien was given Reeses Pieces in the 1984 movie ET, this little-known candy gained immediate popularity. There are three ways product placement happens in the movies: It is accidental. A certain product is just used because it fits the characters personality. It is arranged and the product itself serves as payment for showing it in the movie. For example, a pizza companys product is shown and the company supplies free pizza to everyone on the set while the movie is being made. It is arranged and the movie company receives money from the pizza company. Overdoing product placement is avoided at all costs. If a product is shown too many times in the movie, or too many different products are shown, viewers become aware of it, realize its an advertisement and become turned off to the products which are interrupting their entertainment experience. Sometimes a product is created to fit with a movie that is being made. A car called the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon was created in conjunction with the movie, Tomb Raider. The car was an advertisement for the movie, and the movie an advertisement for the car. So who was doing the product placement, the movie company or the car company? _____ 1. Magazines use product placement in their stories. _____ 2. For product placement to be effective the brand name must be obvious. _____ 3. A character drinking from a Coke can is an example of product placement. _____ 4. The movie ET was made in 1984. _____ 5. Is There Enough Food for Everyone?
Some researchers are saying that the earth is currently not able to produce enough to feed everyone. This means that some people will just have to go hungry. Studies suggest that we need to start producing more food in order to minimize hunger. However, there is another side to the story. According to one study, the world produces enough grain (wheat, rice, etc.) to provide every human being with 3,500 calories a day. That amount of food would make most people fat. This measure does not even include the fruits, vegetables, meat and milk that are produced. If you add these in, each person would have 4.3 lbs. of food a day. The amount of food produced in the last 35 years has grown 16% faster than the population of the earth. The problem is not a lack of food, but that the food doesnt get to the people who need it. In order to get higher prices, businesses sometimes stockpile grain rather than selling it. In addition, poor people often cant afford to buy the food that is for sale in their area. Although we think that most people without food are living in countries with food shortages, that isnt always true. One study showed that 78% of the children who arent getting enough food are living in countries with a food surplus. Another surprising fact is that many countries in which people are hungry export more food than they import. For example, one report says that over 200 million Indians go hungry every day. However, in one recent year India exported 625 million dollars worth of wheat and over a billion dollars worth of rice. China, with its huge population, sets a good example for feeding its people. Somehow, it manages to feed most of its people fairly well while using on 25% as much crop area per person as is used in the United States. This is all food for thought. 1. The writer believes that the earth ____________ (can / cant) produce enough food to feed everyone. 2. There is enough ____________ (meat and milk / grain) so that everyone could take in 3,500 calories a day. 3. The food supply has grown ____________ (slower / faster) than the population. 4. The word stockpile means ____________ (keep / sell) 5. One study says that ____________ (16 / 78) percent of hungry children live in countries with plenty of food to go around. 6. Over ____________ (200 / 625) million Indians dont get enough to eat. 7. In a recent year, India exported over a billion dollars of ____________ (wheat / rice). 8. China uses ____________ (one half / one quarter) as much crop land per person as the United States does.

How to Save Water
As the population of the world grows, food is not the only resource we need to pay attention to. Water is also becoming scarce in some parts of the world and it may become an even bigger problem for all of us in the near future. Here are some water saving tips. In the House Turning off the water while you brush your teeth can save four gallons a minute. Thats about 200 gallons a week per person. Imagine how much water a whole family could save! Limiting your shower to five minutes also saves waterabout 1000 gallons a month. And waiting until you have a full load for the washing machine can save 600 gallons a month. You can even save water by being careful how you drink it. Instead of running the tap to get cold water, keep a container of cold water in the refrigerator. Outside the House Did you know that some plants require a lot more water than others? For example, Shasta Daisies grow well with almost no water. The more low-water plants you have, the less often youll need to water them. Also, always water early in the morning before the sun rises so that the water sinks down into the soil before the suns heat can evaporate it. Water also evaporates quickly (and can even blow away) on windy days. You can conserve water by watering only when the winds not blowing. Another way to save water outside is to build a patio and some walkways in your yard. This creates attractive spaces that dont have to be watered. 1. Turning off the water while you brush your teeth can save __________ (4 / 200) gallons a week. 2. By taking a five-minute shower you can save __________ (250 / 1000) gallons of water a week. 3. Washing only when the machine is full of clothes can save __________ (600 / 1000) gallons of water a month. 4. Putting containers of water in the refrigerator __________ (saves / wastes) water. 5. Shasta daisies require __________ (very little / a lot of) water. 6. You should water outdoor plants in the early __________ (morning / afternoon). 7. New Products from Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology works in materials that are so small we cant see them. However, the changes that this scientific breakthrough is bringing about are becoming more and more obvious. Every day new applications of this technology are turning into new and useful products. Sunscreen Sunscreen is used to protect the skin from sunburn. Traditional zinc oxide formulas cover the skin with a white coating. Nanotech sunscreen uses the same compound but the particles are so small that they appear colorless and the coating is invisible on the skin. Self-cleaning Glass One company makes glass that cleans itself. When light strikes the glass, tiny bits called nanoparticles break down and lift dirt off the surface. At the same time the glass has been given a treatment that makes water spread evenly across the surface. The combination of these two actions keeps the glass clean. Clothing Two types of nanoparticles are used to improve the quality of clothing. One type is similar to a sunscreen and helps protect the skin under the clothing from sunburn. The other creates tiny hairs on the surface of the cloth which helps keep liquids from sinking in. This helps make the cloth stainresistant. No-scratch Coatings Scientists have discovered how to combine aluminum silicate nanoparticles with other materials to make scratch-resistant coatings. They are used to protect the surfaces of everything from cars to eyeglasses and work much better than the traditional polymer-only coatings. _____ 1. Nanotech sunscreen uses zinc oxide. _____ 2. Nanotech sunscreen appears white on the skin. _____ 3. Self-cleaning glass never has dirt on the surface. _____ 4. Self-cleaning glass can absorb water. _____ 5. Some Cell Phone Basics
Almost everyone has a cell phone these days. Its important to keep you phone in good condition so you can take advantage of all its features. Here are some things to remember. First, if you have a regular cell phone, its good to discharge the batteries completely and then recharge them. But for power hungry Smartphones, you shouldnt wait for it to fully drain. Always keep your phone in a cool and dry place. Extreme temperatures and moisture can damage it. And get yourself a good cell phone case to hold your phone when traveling and always keep it clean by using a microfiber cloth that is made especially for LCD screens and plastic surfaces. Early cell phones had built-in address books, but they werent able to perform many of the other functions of todays models. For example, they couldnt provide call waiting or call blocking. An important change came when GSM (Global Systems for Mobile Communication) technology came along. GSM phones allow the user to send text messages and connect to the Internet. They also have an electronic identity card inside that can be moved to a new phone when necessary. The newest cell system is called the 3g system. Although an older cellular system, called 2g, can send multimedia files, it is not as fast as the 3g technology. Bluetooth technology has become very popular of late. The Bluetooth system allows electronic devices to connect up with each other. For example, when the base unit broadcasts signals to a headset, a cell phone user can talk without having to hold onto the phone. However, there are many other applications. For example, Bluetooth can connect a computer to a printer without wires. It also allows players to use wireless controls to play computer games. The name comes from King Bluetooth of Denmark who helped unite Denmark and Norway. The name Bluetooth was chosen because it also helps bring things together. 1. The batteries in a Smartphone ___________ (should / shouldnt) be completely discharged. 2. Always keep your phone in a ___________ (warm / cool) place. 3. Always clean the ___________ (battery / screen) with a microfiber cloth. 4. Early cell phones ___________ (had / didnt have) address books. 5. A Very Special Robot
Weve all seen humanoid robots in the movies or on TV. Most of them are created as part of the story line and only appear to function independent of human control. However, there is one robot that does a fine job on its own and is truly special. His name is ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) and he is the product of more than 20 years of work by the Honda Motor Company. ASIMO is the first robot that can walk independently and climb stairs. Because he has human-like hands, he can operate light switches, open and close doors, carry objects and push a cart. In order to get him to walk well, researchers studied insect, animal and human legs. While humans can move their necks, arms and legs in many different directions, robots have less freedom. Engineers build in degrees of freedom. One degree of freedom is, for example, up and down or back and forth. ASIMO has three degrees of freedom in his neck, seven in each arm and six in each leg. This enables him to have humanlike movements. ASIMOs vision system consists of two video cameras for eyes. His eyes can detect more than one object at a time and determine how far away an object is. He can also recognize faces and understand hand signals that have been programmed into his memory. ASIMO also has three microphones in his head. They allow him to hear what people are saying to him. However, they also have another important function. The sounds of voices picked up by these microphones are used by the robot to determine where the person is standing so he can turn and face them. This adds to ASIMOs eerily human appearance. Engineers are continuing to refine his abilities, believing that someday that many of us will want to have a helper robot like him in our own homes. _____ 1. Movie robots function without human operators. _____ 2. ASIMO was created by a university research program. _____ 3. ASIMO is able to climb stairs by himself. _____ 4. ASIMO is able to turn on a light switch. _____ 5. Researchers studied older robots while designing ASIMOs legs. _____ 6. ASIMOs legs have seven degrees of freedom. _____ 7.
