Using Movie Maker

To Produce a
Teaching or Learning Resource
“THE GROUP DISCUSSION EXERCISE”

Aim: To produce a video of a group

discussion and to enhance the video
using graphics, photos and music.

1. Preparation
1.1 Select a topic for discussion e.g.
“How can we improve the functionality
of our computer laboratory?” and
identify the members of the discussion
group 3 to 4.

1.2 Develop a storyboard for your

video illustrating: Images/slides e.g.
Title slide with discussion question,
group members names, use a photo of
the group, consider camera positions,
introduction narration, who will ask and
respond to the question/s, etc.,
contents of the end slide.

Suggested sequence: Title slide –

group photo – discussion video – end
slide.

1.3 Rehearse the discussion aiming for

a time limit of approximately 3 minutes.

2. Prepare video support resources

2.1 Create a folder for storing the files
for this video production (referred to as
a “collection”).

SLIDES/IMAGES
2.2 Using PowerPoint develop a title
and end slides for the video.

2.3 Take a photo/s of the group, insert

in a slide and overlay some text.

2.4 Save your PowerPoint

presentation as .jpg images in the
Collection folder

2.5 Go to Sounddogs.com, select

PRODUCTION MUSIC (left side of
screen), select a category and then a
sub-category and review samples and
choose your background clip. Note
that you will trim the clip to its required
duration in MovieMaker.

2.6 Right click your music choice and

save to the Collection folder. Note that
the file format will be .mp3 and needs
to be converted to .wav format to
import into Movie Maker (this is also
the case for Camtasia).

2.7 Activate the Audacity software
application

2.8 Select PROJECT then IMPORT

AUDIO and browse to and import your
Sounddogs .mp3 clip

2.9 Select FILE then EXPORT AS

WAV and save the .wav file version to
your Collections folder.

3. Import and edit video resources

Refer to Section 3 in the “Computer
Laboratory” exercise and in addition to
those steps:

3.1 Play your video and click and drag

your image clips to increase or reduce
the time they appear in your video…
e.g. is their sufficient time to read the
image’s text

SAVE YOUR PROJECT

3.2 Select IMPORT AUDIO OR MUSIC

and import your .wav music file and
drag and drop the file onto the
AUDIO/MUSIC timeline.

3.3 Drag the music file until it is

adjacent to the image clips at the
beginning of the video. Click the music

clip and reduce its length to

correspond with the length of the
opening images. Repeat steps 3.2 and
3.3 above for the closing image/s.

3.4 For each music clip right click the

clip and select FADE IN repeat for
FADE OUT.

SAVE YOUR PROJECT

3.5 Right click the Audio Track’s voice

over clip and select VOLUME and if
necessary increase the volume for
your voice over.

4. Add effects
4.1 Select VIEW TRANSITIONS and
insert transition effects between clips.

4.2 Where necessary clip and

rearrange and/or stretch image clips to
correspond to any shifts in the audio
clips.

PRODUCE YOUR VIDEO AS A

MOVIE FILE FOR DELIVERY VIA
YOUR WIKI or BLOG.
