Henry Schein Dental supports African & Caribbean Dental Association UK


Gillingham, 20 January 2014 Henry Schein UK announced today that it supported the inaugural launching of the African & Caribbean Dental Association UK (ACDA-UK). The African & Caribbean Dental Association UK was formed in response to the demand for better oral health awareness amongst minority groups in the United Kingdom and the need for peer review and networking amongst dental care professionals of the African and Caribbean background. The associations first annual dinner was held at the Hilton London Tower Bridge Hotel, end of 2013. Over 150 delegates attended the event. Dr. Julius Babayemi and Dr. Olurotimi Adesanya, Directors of ACDA-UK formally inaugurated the charity gala dinner. At this first annual dinner, ACDA-UK marked the contribution to the dental professionals by underlining the importance of oral to total health and how crucial it is to improve the delivery of oral healthcare to patients. Dr. Adesanya pointed out that the ACDA-UK would like to partner with statutory, professional and voluntary organisations and to encourage its members to make use of their knowledge of culture and languages in promoting better health awareness amongst ethnic communities. Guest Speaker at the event was Dr. Ruby Austin MBE. Dr. Austin qualified in 1961 from the Royal Dental Hospital (University of London). He has held several posts within the dental community including Dental Advisor to the Southwark, Lewsham & Bexley PCT, Examiner of the Royal College of Surgeons, and was awarded an MBE for his services to dentistry in 2000. In his speech, he said there was a need for an association like this to promote oral health awareness amongst the ethnic minority groups in the United Kingdom and the African and Caribbean communities abroad, also he endorsed the charity agenda of the association. Finally, he encouraged members to maximize the opportunity of the forum to professionally develop themselves and to give back to the community especially the African and Caribbean communities. The special guest of honour at the African & Caribbean Dental Associations dinner was Dr. Jide Idirs, the Honourable Commissioner for Health Lagos State Nigeria. Dr Idiris qualified from the college of Medicine University of Lagos Nigeria in 1980. He obtained a Masters in Public Health in 1985 from the Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. He has held several posts both in the United States and Nigeria including a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Blood Pressure Research Unit, Irvin Center for Clinical Research, Columbia University, Div. of Cardiology, New York and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Lagos State Nigeria. In his speech, Dr Idiris, said he believed in the mission of the association especially after he spent some time with the directors of the association and he saw the passion the directors had for the mission of the association. He pledged the support of Ministry of Health Lagos State to assist the association with its programme and appealed to the association to help professionally develop their colleagues abroad, particularly in Nigeria. "Our partnership with the ACDA-UK underlines Henry Scheins commitment to global corporate social responsibility. Supporting dental groups, helping to build leadership capacity and networking within healthcare is a key part of our global Henry Schein Cares programme. Therefore, we are very pleased to be working with the ACDA-UK in creating a resource for dental team members of African and Caribbean origin. We will support ACDA-UK to create an educational programme and help communicate oral health messages in the communities, said Simon Gambold, Managing Director of Henry Scheins medical and dental business in the United Kingdom. Another focus will be the mentoring of 16 to 25 year olds in their local communities.

Short biographies of Dr. Julius Babayemi and Dr. Olurotimi Adesanya, Directors of the African & Caribbean Dental Association UK Dr. Julius Babayemi qualified in 1999. He gained his dental qualification from the University of Manchester (Turner Dental School). He also holds a B.Sc. in Zoology from the University College London. He is the principal dentist at Omnipark Dental Centre Rainham, Kent. He is a member of the British Society of Restorative Dentistry (BSRD), British Society of Periodontology (BSP) and the British Endodontics Society (BES). Dr. Olurotimi Adesanya qualified in 1991 from School of Dentistry University of Benin, Nigeria. He is the principal dentist at Watling Street Dental Care, Gillingham, Kent. Dr Adesanya is a member of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) at the Royal College of Surgeons England the academic home of General Dental Practitioners.
