Week 2 The Sun-Earth- Moon System Day 6 Objective: Students will be introduces to the Sun-Earth-Moon System.

Students will brainstorm what they know about specific vocabulary, research the moon and eclipses, compete The Moon & Eclipses Study Guide, and create a mindmap. Students will: Model how reflected light from the sun causes the moon to shine Explain why the Moon has Phases Compare an eclipse of the Moon and an eclipse of the Sun California Standards: Science 4. The structure and composition of the universe can be learned from studying stars and galaxies and their evolution. As a basis for understanding this concept: d. Students know that stars are the source of light for all bright objects in outer space and that the Moon and planets shine by reflected sunlight, not by their own light. COMMON CORE Comprehension and Collaboration 8.SL.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. ISTE- NETS Students 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: d. Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems. 3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students: b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students: a. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology. Preparation:

Set up class iPads/MacBooks, place Poster Size Post-Its on three different walls in the class along with some markers for students to write with, have the different internet resources available to show students, and make sure students have computer access to school network for The Moon & Eclipses Reading Guide Materials: iPad/MacBook 3 Poster Size Post-Its Markers The Moon & Eclipses Study Guide Student Textbook Speakers Solar Walk App Internet/School Drive/Network Mindmiester access and accounts Brain Pop access and accounts Wiki access and accounts Guided Instruction: Today students will be introduced to The Sun-Earth-Moon System. Start the lesson by writing three vocabulary words (satellite, lunar phase and eclipse) on a Poster Size Post-It and place in three different places in the classroom. Divide the class into three small groups and have each group move from chart to chart, recording everything they know about the terms on the Post-It. Give them about 1 minute per Post-It and have the students collaborate to come up with ideas. After the rotations, students should share what they have on the list, take a picture of the list using their cell phone or iPad. Ask students why is the appearance of the moon always changing? Does the appearance of the moon depend on the Earth and the Sun? How? Students will watch a small video about why the Moon changes shape? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhokvJZFURg The rest of the period the students will gather information about the Lunar Phases and Eclipses. Students may use their textbook (Lesson 2, pg. 472-476), Solar Walk App, and the following websites: http://www.moonconnection.com/moon_phases.phtml http://www.brainpop.com/science/space/moonphases/preview.weml http://www.brainpop.com/science/space/eclipse/preview.weml Tell students they will also be creating a mindmap about Eclipses. Guide students to Chapter 11 Resources found on the school drive, which has the links needed for Day Play Gustav Holst- Neptune during class. Independent Activity:

Students will complete The Moon & Eclipses Study Guide using the resources noted in Guided Instruction. Students will also create a mindmap of Eclipses, noting the differences and similarities between a Solar and Lunar Eclipse. When students are finished with The Moon & Eclipses Study Guide and the mindmap, have the students load it to the class Wiki.
