Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it's really how it works.

Slice Model
The detailing of the project is a design exercise meant to further your investigation of architecture and ideas. This should not be an exercise solely in construction documentation or of redrafting off-the-shelf details. Sources such as Graphic Standards or Sweets Catalog are helpful for generic advice on connections or for product options but should be used with caution. The design of the detail is to support the larger ideas of the project and deeper research into materiality and precedents is required. The detailing of the facade area should describe at a large scale the overall thesis that the entire project follows as best as possible given the scope of the model. Each team will model and draft the entire assembly of ground plane, walls, oors, ceilings and roofs within the facade region. The model will show exterior cladding materials, fenestration, structural and non-structural framing systems, insulating materials, lighting systems, mechanical systems & chases and specic interior nish materials as they apply to that location.

DETAIL DEVELOPMENT MODELS MODEL (3/4 = 1-0):

1. The area of the facade slice should ideally include the main entry to the building and should be a minimum of 40 of the front (or pertinent) elevation. The model should also include a min depth of 20 into the building. The model should extend from the foundation through the parapet and/or roof at the location of the slice. This model is to be a working yet well crafted model that demonstrates your attention to detail and knowledge of the buildings structure, materials and assembly within this region. It should show all building pertinent systems (structural, mechanical, plumbing, day-lighting), exterior cladding assemblies and fenestration, interior nishes (oors, walls, ceilings, built-in furniture and xtures) and all other material assemblies that are part of the slice. Create a working model quickly of the facade, with the intention of developing it and upgrading as the design evolves and improves. Do not delay in the making of this model; the more quickly it is assembled, the greater each teams ability to identify areas needing design attention. Be efcient and creative with your choice of modeling materials and nishes. The intent is not to spend money, it is to detail and design.
