Nature of business Our company is Ngee Ann by the Hill Hotel.

The reason for us setting up a hotel is due to the influx of tourist over the years, thus a need for more lodging. Setting up a hotel helps to boost the GDP of Singapore. As tourism is a major source of income for Singapore, we would like to invest more in the lodging for the tourists. Having an appealing hotel will draw even more tourists to Singapore and thus increasing the nations GDP, creating more job opportunities for locals causing the unemployment rate to decline. By boosting the nations GDP it increases the standard of living of Singaporeans, making the nation a more conducive place to live in. Our hotel has several sources of income such as the lodging of the customers, leasing shops, Forest by the Hill, Rooftop Spa Resort. These generates income for the hotel. Our main source of attraction is the Forest by the Hill which consists of night trails, maize, treasure hunt and a theme park. This is the first ever man made forest built on the roof deck of a hotel. Our sauna is built in the midst of the forest, allowing the customers to be surrounded by a peaceful tropical forest which appeals to nature lovers or people who decide to take a break from the face paced city. Our vision is to save mother earth and our mission is to practice reduce, reuse and recycle, thus we are eco-friendly.

External Environment Economic Forces: Singapores employment rate has been generally stable this past few years but there is a lack of hotelier jobs available for people in the resort management group. Thus, the opening of our Ngee Ann by the Hill Hotel is beneficial to the economy and it will have decreased likelihood of employees leaving their jobs due to the low supply of jobs in this sector. To combat/prevent workers going on strike (worst-case scenario), our hotel policies will ensure that it will not be possible to do this without informing the hotel itself beforehand. This policy would help ensure the continuation and reliability of the hotel to resume their work and thus give credit to the efficiency of the hotel, as well as increase the reputation/goodwill of it. Inflation is something that our business that we cannot run away from. Therefore, we will set aside funds or invest in land property, which appreciates at a rate higher than the inflation rate, thus reducing overall losses of inflation. We would still try to retain our current staff and not fire them to reduce our expenses so as to assure the workers that the hotel would not retrench them when faced with adversity and keep the confidence the employees have in the business.

Technological Forces: As our hotel would have the fastest internet speed amongst our competitors at a minor usage fee, have the latest equipment in the market (washing machine/drier, high quality bed linen and comforters, carpets and an easily understandable website in which users can easily understand, it is safe to say that technological forces would not affect us in the short term. However, our team of staff are technologically savvy and will keep an eye out for any new equipment in the markets that can help to improve our business and up our services rendered to our guests. ATMs are also easily accessible as they are placed in strategic locations to encourage customers to spend more at their own comfort, although services such as credit card readers, NETS and NETS FlashPay are also available in all restaurants and shops.

Sociocultural Forces: Ngee Ann by the Hill Hotel will cater to all of the customers needs, including a prayer room for the Muslim community. As more and more individuals are getting more interested in the environmental-friendly approach due to global warming advertisements and the rising temperatures in the world, our eco-friendly approach would be

satisfactory for them. Fragrant pollen-free flowers specially bred by our staff are transported through ventilation tunnels and into the apartments so that customers can enjoy the unique atmosphere that only Ngee Ann by the Hill Hotel provides. There are other available scents that customers can choose from, or none at all. Furthermore, to attract teenagers from foreign and locally to spend their holidays or vacations in our hotel, there is an abundance of shops following the trends of the teens, making their stay a fruitful one.

Demographic Forces: The Ngee Ann by the Hill Hotel is targeting mainly foreigners from countries experiencing the four seasons. During the winter season, a quick getaway with the family to the Garden City would be ideal and what better place to live in than a replication of the wilderness itself? This unique trait of our hotel by using flower scents, forest trails and a hot spring to relax in after a good swim would surely attract the foreigners to live here. Location of Business We want to set up a unique hotel that offers relaxing and enjoyable facilities in a quiet a peaceful surrounding that has many tourists so that we are able to introduce to them our uniquely Singapore. We have chosen a few alternatives where we will be able to setup our hotel and achieve our goal such as in Sentosa, in the Central Business District (CBD) and at Bukit Timah. We came together to brainstorm about the few advantages and disadvantages such as the feasibility and effectiveness that each location can offer and came up with a list. 1. Sentosa: Advantages: More tourists around as Sentosa and its own casino are tourist attractions. Beautiful scenery as it is surrounded by an open sea. Sentosa would be a good representative to learn about our unique country as it is one of Singapores iconic locations. Overall, Sentosa is a prime location to set up a business. Disadvantages: More people would choose Sentosa over our hotel in terms of staying over and participating in night activities. More people would rather swim in the open sea rather than in a hot spring or swimming pool as it is cheaper. It is a crowded area as there are too many people visiting Sentosa which even includes locals. 2. CBD: Advantages: There will be more traffic of tourists as there are many tourist attractions such as the Esplanade, the Singapore flyer and the Marina Bay sands casino as well as the abundant places to shop at. It is a prime location in Singapore to set up a business. Big billboards are available to help advertise our hotel. It is usually rich areas where people dont mind staying in a hotel Disadvantages: There are congested traffic and thus will create many traffic noises that are disturbing to our quiet and relaxing hot springs surroundings. Many big, established and popular hotels are already there so the tourists would normally go for them instead of a newly established hotel like ours, thus there are too many rivals. Tourists would normally go to the CBD to shop and have fun rather than use our very own unique facilities that we provide. 3. Bukit Timah:

Advantages: It is a quiet and peaceful area, complementing our peaceful forest It has a scenic town like-view. Furthermore, MacRitchie reservoir and the botanic garden are nearby and people can go for a walk or have a picnic before coming back to the hotel to rest. Disadvantages: It is a remote area which doesnt have many tourists. It doesnt have as much activities as compared to the other two areas. It is a pretty small area where a big hotel will not fit in.

After carefully considering all the advantages and disadvantages at each location, we have decided to set up our unique hotel at Bukit Timah as it offers the most quiet and relaxing surroundings and people can come to our hotel to rest after a long day walking or a picnic outing. To implement our hotel, we will wait for the government to hold an auction for a piece of land in Bukit Timah. We will then register with the land transport authorities and bid for the land. We will then advertise our hotel through television and newspaper advertisements to tell the locals about the setting up of our new hotel. We will also create brochures to be put at Changi airport so that newly arrived tourists would know about our hotel. Finally, we will create a website for our own hotel so that foreigners who wish to come to Singapore can read up on our hotel and choose to stay here. We will implement discount packages for the first few months to attract more tourists to come stay at our hotel. After our new hotel is set up, we will evaluate the effectiveness of the location after 6 months by looking at the volume of sales and the profits figures and take action if the figures do not meet our expectations. Planning Function Our first goal for the company is to attract more tourism or locals to stay in our hotels. As when more people come to stay in our hotel, we can earn more revenue. Our second goal is that we hope our hotel can be renowned, as this will help in attracting more tourists coming to stay in our hotel as they know our hotel provide good services. Thirdly, we hope that our business will be booming so that we can set up another similar hotel. In this way, not only will more people come to known of our hotel, but we can earn more profits too. There are some rules that our hotels will strictly emphasize. Our first rule is that we hope that our customers do not bring pets into our hotel as this may scare other customers or some of our customers may be allergic to some pets. Therefore we will not want to have any pets in our hotels. Secondly, we hope that when our customers check out, they do not take any items from our rooms unless they paid for it, or else we will consider it as theft. Thirdly, we hope that regardless of any problems faced, all our staffs can have a nice and polite attitude towards all our customers. We do not want any customers complaining our staffs being impolite or having a bad attitude and services. Future plans will be to have a forest by the bay at the rooftop where customers can spend their free time enjoying the great views and scenes. Moreover, we are being environmentally friendly as there are many beautiful trees and flowers at our rooftop, which can allow our customers to feel relaxed and peaceful. We will want to have a sauna and a Jacuzzi. Upon seeing our sauna and Jacuzzi, we will want our customers to feel soothing when they are inside, and hope that they can enjoy our facilities provided. We will hope by the end of December, we are able to have these facilities.

Organizing Function Ngee Ann by The Hill Hotel will be managed by several key managers to ensure that the hotel. Under the hotels management, there will be three different managers. Mainly they are the Business Manager, Front of House Manager and Domestic Manager. As the Business Manager, he will be in-charge of the hotels finance and the profit and loss. For Front of House Manager, he will supervise and control all Front of House and Housekeeping areas. Lastly for the Domestic Manager, he will be responsible for planning and organizing the hotel cleaning and maintenance operation. Under these three managers, there will be other key personnel reporting to them. Being the managers of the hotel, they will have to display certain types of managerial roles. Firstly, the leadership role. The managers are responsible for their subordinates actions and behavior, also their subordinates success and failure greatly reflect on them. They will have to lead by example so that their subordinates will follow suit and do the same thing. If the manager is lazy and always procrastinating, we can expect their subordinates to behave likewise. So managers have to behave how they want their subordinates to be by speaking kindly, showing respect and giving praises when necessary. In addition, as the manager of the hotel they will have to find ways to motivate and encourage their subordinates to ensure job satisfactory and productivity. The managers cannot force their subordinates to do things that they disagree on, otherwise, the workers will be unhappy and affecting job productivity. Managers of the different aspects can motivate their subordinates by giving fair treatment to everyone, no subordinates is given special treatment and also proper incentives. By creating a fair system of incentives and benefits will encourage the workers to work hard. Secondly, the disseminator role. Managers need to constantly disseminate important information to subordinates via e-mails and meetings so that subordinates know whats going on.

Leading Function Ngee Ann by the Hill will be applying all three leadership theories. However, we will be placing emphasis on certain theories that we think are relevant for our industry. Firstly, we would emphasize more on the Hersey & Blanchard theory, which is to recognise that a good leader is one who is able to select the correct leadership style for a particular situation he is in. In (ICN), we deal with different situations every day as we are in the service industry, and it is impossible for one to predict what kind of situation will happen next. Therefore, it is important for the leader to be tactful in the way they handle the problems that arise. Sticking to the same leadership style might not work as different workers have different abilities and ways of learning. For instance, we will handle a lazy worker and a clumsy worker in two different manners. For the lazy worker, we can issue warnings, and if the situation does not improve, we can consider punishing the worker. As for the clumsy worker, we can let him/her attend more trainings so that she can serve the customers better. Secondly, we can refer to the managerial grid, which shows the managers concern for production and people for the different approaches. Based on this theory, the best approach is the team management approach. Team management means to work together as a committed team and to achieve the organizational goals with trust and respect. This is the best method as the workers are in a good relationship and they will enjoy their working environments, leading to low absenteeism, which will in turn improve the companys

performance. This way, both the workers and the organizations welfare is taken into consideration. Thirdly, we will also be looking into the traits theory. It is natural for one to follow a person that looks physically appealing compared to another which is lacking in that aspect. We do know that looks can be deceiving, however, it is humans nature to be attracted to the looks, and furthermore, we are working in a service industry and it is important for one to carry themselves well in front of others. They are the role models of their subordinates, hence, they have to put their best in everything that they do during work. They will have to be honest and have moral reasoning while handling their workers so that their workers can trust them and will be more willing to obey the instructions given to them. Communication is a vital tool in leadership. For one to be a good leader, they will have to first know how to communicate well with his/her subordinates. This helps to build a strong rapport between the manager and his subordinate, which will naturally convince them to follow the manager. Last but not least, the ability of the manager is what we look for in a worker, and whether or not he/she is capable of being a leader. If a leader is able to prove his ability to his subordinates, they will be convinced to follow the manger as they respect him for his competences.
