Course Structure Form for On-Line Courses

About course structures Your on-line course will be made up of one or more modules. Modules in turn are made up of topics and assessments, the topics being derived from the topic repository. In designing the structure of your course, you need to consider and select the related topics and group them together into modules. Modules should contain a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 topics to enable the learner to attempt each assessment with a reasonable chance of success (the longer the module, the more information the learner will need to retain prior to being assessed). Each module should have a coherent theme which is conveyed in the module title. For instance, the following 5 topics could be grouped into a module thus: Module Title Creating Tables in MS Word Topic 1: Inserting a Table Topic 2: Setting Table Properties Topic 3: Adding and removing rows and columns Topic 4: The Tables Menu Controlling Access to Topics Topic 5: Formatting Tables Within a module you can determine how the learner is given access to the topics. This can be controlled and directed, open access or somewhere in between these extremes. A highly controlled structure would require the learner to take a pre-test before being given access to any topics, then being given access to topics in a strict sequence and finally being given access to the post-test (final assessment) on completion of all topics. An open access structure may not have a pre-test at all and would allow the learner to access the topics in any order. All our on-line modules have a final post test and we would recommend that this is locked pending successful Determining Criteria for Successful Completion of a Module Successful completion of a module is dependant upon performance in the post-test. This is different from the selfassessments on page 6 of each topic. The post-test is a multiple choice test, in which each question contains one correct answer and two distracters. The post-test contains a set number of questions, which equate exactly to the total number of objectives in all topics within the module (i.e. there is one question for each objective). There are two mechanisms by which you can choose to determine a pass or a fail. The first and most commonly chosen method is to require the learner to pass each individual topic. In this situation there is no overall passmark for the module, as a learner can score a high overall mark and fail the module or a low overall mark and pass the module. The pass mark that you set for each topic should be based on the value of that topic to the module overall. For instance, in the example above, topic 5 is of less importance than the other 4 topics and hence should have a lower pass mark. If topic 5 had 4 objectives (and hence four post-test questions), you might be inclined to set the pass mark for this topic to 50% (i.e. 2 correct out of 4). On the other hand, topic 1, which is of major importance, may have a pass mark of 75% or even 100% (assuming it too, had four objectives).

Course Interfaces
This sheet must be used where there are off-line components (e.g. workshops) following certain parts of the course. List all associated workshops/off-line components and add the modules that must be completed prior to their commencement. If the workshop/off-line component is at the end of the course put 'All' in the 'Preceding Modules' field. For each part, enter the number of days that you would expect the learner to take to complete the preceding modules. If you wish to encourage learners to provisionally book places on workshops before completing their on-line studies, you can send up to two interim e-mails by way of notification and reminder. These can be used for other communications also. For further information about completing this sheet hover your mouse pointer over the cells with red triangles in the corner.
