Important Dates to Remember

February 1, 2014 File FAFSA as close to this date as possible, even if estimated.

March 14

End of 3rd 9 weeks

Go for the Good Attendance Award or Red and Black Champs Recognition for Attendance; As we hit the hard months of winter it is difficult for students to keep their attendance on track. We need to help students understand the importance of being in school and participating in activities. Being in school everyday means your child wont miss out on learning. Try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours. If he/she asks to stay home just because, remind him/her of what he/she might miss, such as a group project, art class, or music performance. Explain that he/she can be absent in the event of a family emergency or if he/she is truly ill. Form good habits now.

GUIDANCE NEWS
Over 100 Sophomore students visited Vanguard in December and were invited to tour Sentinel on Wednesday, January 22nd. All sophomore students may apply and begin the program their Junior year. Vanguard and Sentinel Applications are due the third Friday in March March 21, 2014. Applications are available in the guidance office and after completion be returned to Mrs. Krupp. Students may attend either half day or full day programs. Mrs. Krupp will be glad to answer any questions from students or parents, so please feel free to stop by, call or email skrupp@fostoriaschools.org . If a student wishes to look more closely at any program, he/she can set up a shadow day. Contact Mrs. Krupp and she will set things up so you will be excused from classes here at Fostoria and can ride the bus to Vanguard. Sophomores: On January 28th, students will be able to take the PLAN test (Practice ACT and Career Planning Test) . This test was not mandatory, but highly recommended. This test is designed to give sophomores an idea of what the ACT will be like. It also gives valuable career planning information to interested students. All Honor Roll students for second quarter were invited to a Pizza Lunch at Wesley United Methodist Church on Friday, January Congratulations Honor 17th. CongratuRoll Students lations to our qualifying students. Vanguard/Sentinel Information Students who plan on attending one of Vanguard or Sentinels college ready programs must take the Compass test (Vocational School version of ACT). This will be set up in February and March. R and B champs (students with no office referrals and only 1 excused absence or tardy) for the first quarter were treated to an ice cream social in the commons area of the High School. Congratulations to all who earned this reward. FYI Sophomore PSAT results were individually passed out in January.

FAFSA COMPLETION WORKSHOP and MORE

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday season and break. January began the second semester and I cant emphasize enough the importance of attendance and effort. Every moment truly does count and students need to make sure that their work and grades are given their best effort and the first priority. I will be reviewing transcripts with both juniors and seniors, making sure that students know what credits they need for graduation. Additionally students should be focusing on what their intended path is after high school so they can make sure they are adequately prepared. Seniors who are planning to attend college will need to make sure their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is completed as soon as possible. We will be offering the Financial Aid and FAFSA Completion workshops here at the school with Holly Cipriani from Bowling Green State Universitys financial aid department. She will be here to inform us and answer questions. The first will be held on Tuesday, February 4 th. It will begin at 6pm in the high school computer lab off the library. If you are unable to attend, College Goal Sunday will be held on February 9, 2014 at 2pm. Our local location will be Terra Community College in Sandusky County. All students should be aware of their college deadline which may be earlier than the priority deadline of February 15th. Additionally January through April is a prime time for local scholarship applications. These will be sent through student school emails with cell phone reminders through Remind101. If you havent yet signed up for this service and would like to please text @mrsh14 to (469)203-4298. Juniors are eligible for 2 college visits. The second half of the school year is prime time for students planning to attend college to start exploring their next step. Students should be narrowing their goals for the future beginning at least to focus on a career cluster. The Ohio Career Information System (OCIS) is an excellent tool to use for this purpose. Juniors were given the opportunity to explore this in their English classes prior to break. It is a great resource for assessments, occupation and college information all on one site. The web address if www.ocis.org and the high school login is FostorHS and password is ohiocis03. It is a great tool that can provide further information for students who are unsure of their next step or looking for more specific information on careers and colleges. College-going juniors should also be preparing for the ACT and/or SAT tests which should be taken at least once prior to their senior year. A free test prep site is www.learnatest.com/lel . Click on college preparation on the left side of the page. Also those juniors who participated in the PSAT and ASVAB have links to help with test preparation and career exploration. Web addresses and codes can be found on their summary of results sheets. As always, if you have any questions or concerns I am here to help. This is definitely a time of much change and need for preparation, so use me as a resource! Working together is the best way to prepare for the future. I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you. MaryBeth Hutcheson Jr/Sr Guidance Counselor
