Course Description:
Intermediate Spanish II (Spanish 2010) is a one-semester course intended to enhance communicative
skills that students have begun to acquire in Basic Spanish I and II (Spanish 1000 and 1010) and
Intermediate Spanish I (SPAN 2000) or in high school Spanish classes. The emphasis of this course is on
learning Spanish for practical use. The course requires regular classroom participation and approximately
two hours of outside preparation (listening, writing, reading, and grammar study) for every hour of class.
The course will be conducted entirely in Spanish. We will be doing many pair and group activities in which
you are expected to actively participate and use only Spanish. A good command of the grammar as well as a
broad knowledge of vocabulary are indispensable to enhance communicative skills. Using the verb forms
correctly will ensure accurate communication.

REQUIREMENTS (It is a requirement to bring the student textbook everyday to class):

1. Class Participation and Attendance. (10 % of the final grade). Students must attend class regularly
and must make every effort to participate actively in classroom activities. You must attempt to speak
Spanish in class activities. Each student is allowed 4, 50-minute absences. Any additional unjustified
absence will result in a drop of two points in the final grade scale: with 5 absences a scale of 87 drops to
85, for instance. Two late arrivals by more than 10 minutes will equal one absence. In order for an
absence to be justified, the student must provide a valid explanation. Acceptable documentation is that
which is official, such as a doctors note on original letterhead paper (in general, photocopies and faxes
will not be accepted), a document from Sindecuse that shows an appointment date and time, a dated
container of medication, a note from an athletic division, an original program from a funeral, an
obituary, etc. Personal notes from relatives or friends do not qualify as acceptable documentation.
Whenever possible, the documentation should provide a phone number that can be called for
verification. [OJO! The falsification of official documents is grounds for dismissal from the
University.]

Your overall class participation will be evaluated according to the ten criteria specified on the Class
Participation Self-Assessment Sheet, shown in Appendix 1A-B. Since you cannot participate if you are
absent from class, regular class attendance is an important component of your participation grade.
[NOTE: A point reduction due to any absence(s) stands regardless of whether or not an absence is
excused.] At the end of each of the four chapters covered in Spanish 2010, you will be asked to complete
a copy of the self-assessment sheet to submit to your instructor. To complete the sheet, circle one point
value on the horizontal scale given for each of the ten evaluation criteria. Circle the point value on each
scale that most accurately describes your performance in that area for that grading period (10=excellent,
0=very bad). Then, add up the points and write the resulting total score in the space provided at the end
of the sheet. Your instructor may accept or alter your self-assessment, may offer comments, and then
will record the total number of points earned for that chapter or grading period. [NOTE: If you do not
SANISn 2010 ] IALL 2013 3

3
understand or if you disagree with a change made to your self-assessment, you should discuss the matter
with your instructor immediately. Office hours are the most appropriate time for this.] By the end of the
semester, you will have received four class participation grades.
To further enhance your understanding of how to complete the self-assessment sheet, it should be noted
that each chapter, or grading period, occupies approximately three weeks of the semester. Each course
section meets for four 50-minute class sessions per week, regardless of whether these occur over four
days (e.g., MTWR from 1:00-1:50) or over two extended days (e.g., MW from 12:00-1:40). Thus, a
grading period represents approximately twelve 50-minute class sessions. Thus, for components #1 and
#2, each class session represents a little less than one step on the scale. For example, if you are absent for
one 50-minute class session during the grading period of Chapter 9, your score for the Class attendance
component should be 9 points. Furthermore, for the second component Arriving late and leaving
early, each occasion of arriving late or leaving early is worth a penalty of approximately one point on
the 10-point scale. Finally, please note that for component #10 Behavior, texting, the use of a cell
phone, or its excessive ringing during class will result in a reduction of points from your participation
grade.

2. Compositions (2). (20%) You will write 2 thirty minutes composition in class (approximately 200-250
words) based on topics specified in the textbook. You will write the first draft of the composition in class
and turn in to the teacher for critique and grading. When the first draft is returned to you, you will type a
final draft in a computer, double space, considering the peer revision and teacher comments. You will
receive two grades; one for each draft, and the final grade will be the average of both. If you do not return
the second draft you will receive a 0. (*)
Composition Evaluation Criteria:
1

Information/Composition of Task 35 points
Organization 15 points
Grammar 30 points
Vocabulary 15 points
Mechanics 5 points
Total: 100 points

3. Quizzes. (10%) There will be 2 five-minute grammar and vocabulary quizzes with each chapter.

4. Taller de escritura. (10 %) At the end of each chapter students will need to write 20 minutes
composition in class, in a green book following the instructors instructions.

5. Oral Exam (10%) The Oral exam will be administered during the 11
th
, 12
th
and 13
th
week. It will be a
10-12 minute exam with a partner. The exam consists of a role-play with your partner. You will be
presented with a situation and you and your partner will have to assume different roles responding to it.
The conversation may include different tasks such as describing places, asking and answering questions,
giving opinions, etc.
Oral Exam Evaluation Criteria:

Quality / Appropriateness of Content 35
Vocabulary 20
Accuracy of grammar 30
Fluency / Pronunciation 15
Total: 100 points

6. Mid-term. (10%) The midterm exam will be given over two consecutive 50-minute class sessions. It will cover
Chapters 13-14 No exam may be made up unless you have notified your instructor immediately
before or after the class period of the scheduled exam, and you have a documented excuse. Only
official notes are accepted, which you must bring with you. NONE of the exams are curved.

7. MSL Homework. (5%) Some assignments activities on the MySpanishLab (=MSL) have to be done
weekly at home. (See Appendix IV)

8. SAM Homework. (5%) Some assignments activities on the Student Activities Manual have to be done
before the end of each chapter. The SAM homework will be corrected in class and collected for the
teacher as the day he/she assigned. (See Appendix V)

9. Oral Presentation. (10 %) These group or individual presentations will serve as a review of the material
covered during the semester. They will help improve your performance on the final exam and confirm
your progress. Groups will be assigned by your professor in due time.
Oral Presentation Evaluation Criteria:
Accuracy of grammar 25 points
Clarity of communication 20 points
Vocabulary 25 points
Originality 15 points
Fluency/Pronunciation 15 points
Total: 100 points

10. Final exam. (10%). This exam will be accumulative but will focus most heavily on chapter 15 and Appendix
2, Expansin gramatical. As the mid-term exam will include listening, reading, writing, composition, and
grammar activities. The final exam will take place in your classroom in the final examination week
(December, 9-13).

*** Extra credit. Students can submit three extra credits the last day of the class in order to add 3% to their
final grade. Only students who have been completed the MSL and SAM homework are allowed to present
any of the three extra credits. The three ways to earn an extra credit are: 1) Participate at least in 10 hours in
any of the Spanish Tables, 2) See three movies at the Spanish Film Festival (times to be announced) 3)
Create a personal dictionary which has at least 100 new words used during this class with a definition and a
sentence, both in Spanish.
