Spades Hearts Clubs Diamonds Serious trouble, physical or emotional actively working imagined problems, Spades illness, possible harm healing through problems improved finances to oneself or another joy, happiness, love, Hurt feelings, creativity, service to happiness & success, Hearts romance & having a emotional pain others & good luck comfort & security good time increased difficulties, happy outcome, action & increased increase in power or Clubs problems with work developing emotions activity, taking control money energy block, money rewards, positive great success or applied power or Diamonds problem or spending attraction or sharing acquiring and saving investing money money money money With just the basic meanings to the Suits, its possible to provide an accurate, insightful reading. And a good understanding of the four suits and how they interact is an excellent jumping off point for delving more deeply into the symbolism of the individual cards. Basic Cartomancy Part 2: Number Meanings I think the biggest problem most new cartomancist encounter is how get the card meanings to fit together and tell a story. The beginner will memorize all of the various meanings and important combinations for each card, but in actual practice, those special combos dont always show up in a layout to make things easy. Thats when a good foundation in the symbolism of the suits and numbers becomes so important. Once you have a good understanding of the Suits and how they interact as outlined in Part 1, the basic number meanings can be used to delve more deeply into the symbolism of each card. Each number has two opposing meanings. The meaning applied to each card will be determined by its suit. The first meaning presented (positive meaning) usually applies to a red card, and the second meaning (negative) will most often apply to a black card. Also the card falling to the right will always influence the final meaning, but its always best to allow your intuition to make the final determination. Basic Number Meanings: 1 beginning or ending 2 cooperation or conflict 3 - expansion or loss 4 foundation or instability 5 activity or restlessness 6 communication or ignorance 7 improvement or stagnation 8 Health or illness (balance/imbalance) 9 wish or disappointment 10 success or failure 11 (Jack) thoughts, also young helpful person, or troubled youth 12 (Queen) receptivity/intuition, also female friend or rival 13 (King) action/force, also male friend or rival The basic Suit Interactions combined with the Basic Number Meanings are all you need to produce accurate, insightful Cartomancy readings. You can add additional meanings to each card to broaden the scope of your readings, but youll find that youll return to the basic information again, and again when the more detailed meanings dont seem to jive in your card layou t. Basic Cartomancy Part 3 The Court Cards As People Posted by Cardseer on October 18, 2007 Basic Cartomancy Part 3 The Court Cards As People: When Court Cards appear in a reading, they will most often represent actual people in the querents life. When I first learned to read the cards, I had a terrible time trying to sort out who was who in my readings. I found it helpful to familiarize myself with the personality attributes associated with the four suits, and then apply that information to the basic physical attributes for the specific Court Card. For more detailed or specific information regarding the Court Cards, please check out the individual cards linked from the right-hand sidebar. Basic Physical Attributes: Jacks Young person of either sex usually under 35 years old. Can represent a child. May also represent an older person who is immature, or just young at heart. Queens Traditionally a mature female, but the queen may represent a female of any age. King male, usually mature, or in a position of authority. May also represent a younger man who is mature for his age, or is burdened by responsibilities.

Basic Personality Attributes Based on Suit Correspondences: Hearts: emotional, creative, romantic, compassionate, generous, sensitive, nurturing, dependable, protective, moody. Clubs: practical, friendly, reliable, trustworthy, helpful, ambitious, enthusiastic, sensible, stable, stubborn. Diamonds: independent, extravagant, impulsive, impatient, optimistic, dynamic, restless, analytical, intelligent, high strung. Spades: Powerful, intense, demanding, controlling, secretive, possessive, charming, mysterious, calculating, detached. Traditional Attributes and Descriptions Associated with the Court Cards: The following table lists the traditional physical attributes used for choosing a significator to represent the querent in certain layouts. Alternatively, the significator may be based on the personality attributes listed above, or stereotypical correspondences outlined further below. Blond or red hair & blue or green eyes Male under 35 years old Male over 35 years old Female under 35 yrs old Female over 35 years old Female under 18 yrs old Jack of Diamonds King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds Sandy hair with brown, blue or green eyes Jack of Hearts King of Hearts Queen of Hearts Queen of Hearts Jack of Hearts Brown to dark brown hair, brown eyes Jack of Clubs King of Clubs Queen of Clubs Queen of Clubs Jack of Clubs Dark brown to black hair, dark brown eyes Jack of Spades King of Spades Queen of Spades Queen of Spades Jack of Spades

Basic Court Cards stereotypes: I found it also helped me tremendously to think of the Court Cards as stereotypes, or cardboard cutouts. Its a natural psychological function to sort by archetype, and I found that when I described a Court Card as a stereotype, the querent had an easier time placing that person in their life. Of course real people are shades and combinations of all of these and many other types, but if you focus on a predominate personality feature, its not too difficult to pick a card to represent any real person in your life. When I was learning, I found excellent practice in assigning a playing card Court to each real person in my life. Then when that card would come up in a reading, I would describe some of the major characteristics of the person I knew. I was amazed at how often this description rang true for the querent. Below I suggest two stereotypes for each Court Card. Once you are familiar with the Suit meanings, youll think of many more on your own, and eventually youll flesh out the Court Cards into real people. Jacks: J The Dreamer: He or she is also The Lover, and he can represent a loved one, or family member of the querent. J - The Student: He or she is also The Trusted Friend, or helper, and can represent someone who admires the querent. J The Optimist: He or she is also The Letter carrier or The fashionista, and can represent someone who is related to the querent through marriage. J The Charmer: He or she is also the The Soldier, and may represent any young person in uniform. Queens: Q - The Homemaker: She is also The Nurturer, and may represent the wife, mother, or quality of motherhood. Q The Trusted Friend: She is also The Business Woman, and may represent a female work associate. Q The Socialite: She may represent a woman with money, or who works in finance. In love triangles she may represent The Other Woman. She may also represent a woman related to the querent through marriage. Q The Widow: She is also The Divorcee, and although certainly not today, prior to the 1950s there was a social stigma attached to the divorcee who was not to be trusted. This idea is reflected in the symbolism of the Q, and she may also represent a rival in business or love. Kings: K The Family Man: He is also The Protector, and may represent the querents husband or father or any paternal influence. K The Advisor: He is also The Businessman, and may represent an executive, a business owner, or a work associate. K The Entrepreneur: He may have wealth, or work in finance. He is also The Magistrate, and may represent a politician or government official. K The controller: He is also The Man of Authority, and may represent the querents boss or landlord, and may also represent a policeman or military officer. He may also represent a divorced or widowed male in the querents life. The Court Cards in Groups: When the Court Cards fall in groups they will indicate the interactions between the people in the querents life. A cluster of Court Cards may denote a social function. The final Court Card in the series will generally indicate the mood of the get-together. Hearts = partying, having a good time, or a family function. Clubs = a practical function such as a class, or a work engagement. Diamonds = intellectual pursuits, or earned or reward celebrations. Spades = a gathering out of obligation, or necessity. In a cluster of Courts, their directions can indicate a lot about the dynamics of the group. The direction a Court Card faces will usually indicate where that persons interest is focused. Here are some additional suggestions for interpreting Court Cards based on their direction :

Traditionally, the querents position is to the left of a row of cards. Therefore a Court Card that faces left is generally showing interest in the querent, and a Court Card that faces right is generally not focused on the querent or his/her needs, and may indicate disinterest, disagreement or estrangement. A Court Card facing toward another court indicates interest in that person. If the second Court is looking away, it can indicate a one-sided relationship, or unrequited love. Court Cards of the same sex facing each other indicate agreement or friendship. Court Cards of the same sex facing each other with heart between them can indicate a same-sex relationship. Court Cards of the opposite sex facing each other indicate marriage or a strong relationship. Court Cards facing away from each other indicate a disagreement, argument, or estrangement. The pip the Court Card looks to will reveal what is on the persons mind, or may refer to an event or circumstance influencing this person directly. When the Court Cards Do Not Represent the People in Your Querents Life Posted by Cardseer on December 25, 2012 courts In most cases when a Court Card appears in a reading, the card will represent the querent or an important person in the querents life. But every once in a while youll come across a Court Card that doesnt seem to make sense within the context of the reading, and your gut tells you that the card is not meant to represent a specific someone. So how to interpret a court card when its not a person? It can be tricky. I dont have a canned set of meanings that I use for face cards when they dont represent people, but I do have general guidelines that I follow with reliable results. First, it helps to have a good understanding of the suit meanings, because the suit will set the mood or the theme for the Court Card. Here is a list of the common meanings I use for the suits, but please keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive. Feel free to add to these meanings, or subtract from them, or switch them around based on your own intuitive feeling for each suit. Spades negativity, problems, responsibilities, obligations, law enforcement, challenges, obstacles, mysteries, decisions, Karmic debts, obsessions, addictions, resentment, anger, setbacks, confinement, anxiety, failure, fear, illness and loss. Hearts emotions, love, romance, happiness, comfort, compassion, sharing, family matters, relationships, intimacy, rest, relaxation, amusement, fun, laziness, pleasure, peace, calm, creativity, soul connections, religion, and healing. Clubs good luck, growth, goals, conversations, verbal communication, paperwork, learning, action, physical activity, sports, exercise, work, construction, clubs and organizations, business, friendships and social interactions. Diamonds energy, electricity, power, science, technology, language, written communication, higher education, independence, restlessness, nerves, optimism, intellect, imagination, design, plans, spirituality, psychic energy, money, possessions, rewards, success, and legal judgments. I combine the suit meanings with the archetypal meanings I associate with the Court Cards by rank. Jacks The Jacks represent children and young people. Therefore the Jack can denote something small or the start of something new. In the days before the invention of the telephone, young boys were employed as messengers, so the Jacks can be the messengers for their suits. Jacks can also represent thoughts, so there is the idea of movement connected with these cards. Queens The Queens represent women, feminine things, and the divine feminine principle. Queens represent motherhood and love, and they are nurturing, creative, receptive and introspective. The Queens denote growth and personal power. They bring emotions and intuition and healing to their respective suits.

Kings The Kings are grown men, and are the highest ranking court card. They denote mastery, authority, control and leadership. The Kings are protective and commanding, but they can be demanding, possessive, and even agressive and overbearing depending on their suit and surrounding cards. With the above meanings in hand, and with a healthy dose of logic and a good pinch of intuition, its not too difficult to determine what a court card is trying to say when your gut tells you it isnt meant to represent a person. As an example, lets combine the Jack with the Suit of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds traditionally he is the letter carrier. He can represent a small sum of money, the start of a financial venture, a written message, a message about finances, a financial statement, a check, a receipt, money transfer, a message from your spirit guides, a place for higher learning, etc. How about the Queen with the Suit of Spades Queen of Spades traditionally, she is the widow. She can represent loneliness, separation, an ending, sterility, miscarriage, female health issues, blocked emotions, loss of personal power, blocked creativity, etc. Now well look at the King with the suit of Clubs King of Clubs traditionally, he is a man of business. He can represent success in business, moving up the social ladder, attaining ones goals, mastering a physical skill or ability, taking ownership of a project, an exclusive mens club or organization, etc. Your own intuition and the surrounding cards will help add color and flavor to your interpretation of the Court Card. The real trick is in knowing when a Court Card is meant to represent a person, and when it is not. If you fall into the habit of interpreting all of your face cards as qualities and characteristics rather than as people, youll miss out on the important roles other people play in the querents life. This would create a blind spot in your readings which could be a serious detriment to your querents understanding of the true factors influencing his or her life experiences.

Card Pairing in Cartomancy: Basic Lessons in Reading Playing Cards Posted by Cardseer on October 20, 2012 In response to repeated requests for more introductory information on the best way to begin the study of Cartomancy, and also how to make sense of a group of random cards in spread, I thought I would post a detailed breakdown of how I approach the cards in a reading Step 1: Card Meanings Naturally, the first step in learning to read the cards is choosing a core set of meanings. You want to choose a comprehensive system that will allow you to pick up on a wide range of events and experiences in your readings. The system should make logical sense to you, so that you will be able to build onto the core meanings and make them your own. Look for consistency In other words, it helps if all of the cards of a particular suit bear a similar influence, and if all of the pips of the same number share a common theme. For example, in the system I use the suit of Spades represents challenges, delays, and obstacles. The 8s all deal with balance. So in a general sense the 8 of Spades would indicate the need to overcome an obstacle (sickness) or a challenge (disappointment) in order to restore balance to mind, body or soul. You will find this consistency helpful for memorizing card meanings, and to be immeasurably useful when youre faced with a c ard that seems to make no sense in a reading. If you fall back on the general card meanings based on suit and number, the purpose of the card in the spread will suddenly become clear. Step 2: Card Pairings

Once you understand the suit influences and number meanings, and have memorized one or two keywords for each card, the next step is to learn how the cards relate to each other in a layout or card spread. The basic unit in card reading is the pair. Reading a card pair is much more than just combining the meanings of each individual card into a third conglomerate meaning. Card pairing is also about the flow of action between the cards that tells an important story. The following examples are based on the particular set of meanings that I utilize, but the techniques should be applicable to any set of meanings of your choice. You can review the card meanings I use by scrolling down the right side-bar to the Playing Card Meanings section where you will find links to each individual card. When pairing cards the card order is important because the first card (card A) acts as the premise of the situation, or the initiator of the action. The second card (card B) shows the result or outcome, or acts as the receiver of the action.

Another way to look at the pairing is by card sequence. The flow of action moves from left to right. We could say that Card A represents the past, and card B represents the future but depending on the context of the situation any sequence is possible Card A Card B Now Later Distant Past Recent Past Past Present Present Future Near Future Distant Future Tomorrow Next Week Now lets take a look at a couple of examples to see the pairings in action For the following examples, I am utilizing the following card meanings: 2 of Diamonds = an exchange of money, a payment 4 of Diamonds = a bank account In a general sense, the Diamond suit represents money and financial matters, the 2s represent cooperation or exchange, and the 4s represent stablilty or a solid foundation. Please note that other meanings are possible for these cards, but for this exercise I am limiting the interpretation to combinations of the above listed core meanings.

Example 1 In the first example, Card A (the 2 of Diamonds) indicates that an exchange of money is the premise of the matter. Card B shows the result or outcome or receiver of the money exchange, a bank account. So based on the card order in Ex. 1 the interpretation would be read as money is being deposited into a bank account, or a payment to the bank. Example 2 In the second example, Card A (the 4 of Diamonds) indicates that a bank account is the premise of the matter. Card B shows the result or receiver of the action. In this case the money is received. So based on the card order in ex. 2, the interpretation would be that money is being withdrawn from a bank account (or a bank loan). Step 3: Incorporating Additional Cards Now we can introduce an additional card (C) to the mix to see how the flow of action continues toward building a detailed interpretation of the cards. We have already paired cards A + B, and now we will pair the c ards B + C for each example

In the above examples, Card C is the Ace of Hearts, and for me this card represents home and family. In a general sense the Aces represent the beginning or the source, and the suit of Hearts represent emotional matters. For most of us, home and family is the source of our emotional security. Example 2.1 The 4 of Diamonds indicates that the bank account is the premise of the reading, and the 2 of Diamonds is a payment being received from the account. The Ace of Hearts tells us who or what receives the payment. Hence, this could be a bank withdrawal that is spent on the home, or money lent to a family member, or a bank loan for the home. Other interpretations are possible such as real estate earnings, a small loan on a house, etc.

I had this combination show up in a reading for a client who was applying for a home improvement loan to repair the roof on her home. The combination of red cards showed a positive outcome, and the client was approved for the loan. Example 2.2 The 2 of Diamonds falling first shows a payment as the premise of the readings. The 4 of Diamonds tells us where the payment is received; it is deposited into an account. The Ace of Hearts describes the account as dealing with home or family. Hence, these cards show a payment made to account on a house mortgage, or home loan. Its important to note that each card is combined with the adjacent card to either side, but cards are not reflected as in Lenormand. In other words, I would not combine cards A + C because that would negate the flow of action which is important to the accurate interpretation of the reading. To maintain the flow of action, the cards are read (A+B) + (B + C) + (C + D). Practice A very useful exercise for practicing card pairing is the three-card daily draw. While youre enjoying your morning cup of coffee or tea, before starting your day, you can ask the cards, or your spirit friends through the cards, what you most need to be aware of this day. Then draw three cards, interpret the cards in pairs, and journal your impressions. That evening or the following morning you can review your journal entry to see how well the cards described the energy that played out in your day. This is an excellent exercise for bonding with your cards, and picking up new meanings or gaining a new perspective on old meanings. The Next Step Once you feel comfortable with your three-card draws, you can graduate to using more cards. In a row of more than three cards, you would continue to pair the cards in order to build your meaning. I look at the card suits for a general impression of the energy of the reading. The final card in the series will describe the outcome of the matter. Red cards reveal a positive outcome, Clubs are neutral, and Spades show delays, obstacles and challenges. A row of cards with predominantly red cards that ends in a Spade will show obstacles and delays. A card row with predominantly black cards that ends with a red card shows overcoming challenges to achieve a positive outcome You can find an example reading of reading a row of 5 cards in my Cartomancy Tips: Interpreting Combinations in a Row of Cards. ---Ace of Spades Posted by Cardseer on June 18, 2007 Playing Card Meanings for Divination: Ace of Spades s1.gif Suit Influence: Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind. Number Influence: The Number 1: New beginning, first, starting out, initiative, individuality, solitude, leader, the conscious mind and conscious control. How to Read the Ace of Spades: Traditionally the Ace of Spades has gotten a bad rap similar to the common misconceptions regarding the Death card of Tarot. And like the true meaning of the Tarot Death card, the Ace of Spades symbolizes the changes and transformations associated with endings and new beginnings. In rare cases the Ace of Spades can indicate physical death, but only in combination with other Spades. Some systems use a reversed position meaning for the Ace of Spades even though no reverse meanings are used for the other 51 cards in the deck. Traditionally, the reversed Ace of Spades symbolizes death. Whereas the three other Aces in the deck represents new beginnings, the Ace of Spades can refer to endings, or possibly the beginning of trouble in a reading. Of course, endings are not always bad things, so the appearance of the Ace of Spades in a reading can indicate a rebirth, and can be regarded as an indirectly positive influence. Because Spades symbolize the mind, a modern meaning of the Ace Spades refers to what affects the mind such as worry, fear, anxiety, decisions, etc. The A is the only card in the deck with a reversed meaning in my grandmothers system. If the A fell with the apex up, she would read it as a troubled mind (or FEAR of death). If it fell with the apex down, it indicated physical death. In my own readings, Ive dropped the reversed meaning, and read the A as worries, anxiety, a pending decision, etc. Although in truth, I still wince a little when the reversed A falls in a layout.

For the A to indicate a physical death in my readings, it would have to be clustered with some of its more unsavory friends such as the 2 and the 5 or 6 along with either the 8 or 9 to indicate loss and grieving. Two of Spades 50.png Suit Influence: Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind. Number Influence: The Number 2: duality, balance, compatibility, agreement, opposition, exchanges, partnerships and interactions. How to Read the 2 of Spades: Traditionally the 2 of Spades represents a restriction or feeling stuck, and a r emoval or separation necessary to move forward. All 2s bring news, and with the 2 of Spades its usually bad news. The number 2 symbolizes exchanges, and when influenced by the Suit of Spades, it denotes conflict, betrayal, violent arguments, misunderstandings, and malicious gossip. The 2 of Spades can represent guilt, suppressed anger, feelings of resentment, and holding a grudge. It can denote vindictiveness, or harmful retaliation for any real or imagined slight. My grandmother called this card La Spaggadura, which means rift or break in Italian dialect. The number 2 symbolizes agreements, compatibility and partnerships, but with the influence of the Suit of Spades, the 2 represents disagreements, incompatibility, and broken partnerships. The 2 can indicate a break up, or losing touch with someone. It can denote leaving a job, getting rid of a car, or spending a large sum of money and feeling guilty about it. The separation can be of a temporary or permanent nature based on the circumstances and the surrounding cards. Card Multiples: Twos in multiples can mean double the fun or double the trouble. They can represent things coming in twos couples, twins, socks, shoes, etc. Two 2s: Things coming in pairs. Three 2s: Can indicate lots of activity and everything happening at once. Four 2s: Teamwork, co-operation, group activity. Card Combinations: Face Card + 2 = someone leaving the querents life. 3 + 2 = walking out on an argument, and holding a grudge. 4 + 2 = a marital separation or the dissolution of a partnership. 6 + 2 = an abandoned vehicle, or getting rid of a car. Three of Spades 46.png Suit Influence: Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind. Number Influence: The Number Three represents expansion, combinations, communications, creativity and growth. How to Read the 3 of Spades:

Traditionally, he 3 of Spades is a card of loss. The number 3 symbolizes expansion and growth, and when influenced by the suit of spades, it can represent a growing problem, or a worsening situation. Conversely, this card can also signify interrupted growth, or a blockage. The number 3 also represents communications, and the 3 of Spades can denote confusion, misunderstandings, lies, deceptions, and deceit. This card can represent an argument. Since the number 3 may also refer to a third wheel, and the 3 of Spades can indicate third-party interference, or trouble coming from the outside. My grandmother called the 3 La Suocera which has two not so different meanings in Italian: The Mother -in-Law and The Funny Bone. She would say that both meanings apply to this card. Like the proverbial mother-in-law, the 3 can indicate a troublesome, meddling person who is interfering in someone elses personal business. And like a sharp whack to the funny bone (or a meddlesome mother-in-law for that matter), the 3 can also indicate a particularly tender matter or situation-like a sore point in the querents life. This card can indicate that the querent or someone around the querent is touchy or defensive about someone or something. The 3 can also refer to a third wheel, and in matters of the heart it can represent the mistress or the rake in a love triangle. You may remember an old song from the 1970s by Cher called Dark Lady. If you dont know it, the song is about a woman who goes to a gypsy fortune teller only to learn that she, her husband, and the gypsy woman are caught in a love triangle. When the gypsy lays down the cards, the lyrics to the song are: She dealt two cards, a queen and a three And mumbled some words That were so strange to me Then she turned up a two-eyed jack My eyes saw red but the card Still stayed black She said the man you love is secretly true To someone else who is very close to you Ive always been sure that the three she dealt with the queen was the 3 of Spades. The two -eyed Jack was undoubtedly the Jack of Clubs since hes the only black Jack with both eyes visible. In some of the older Cartomancy systems, the Jack of Clubs has a reputation for being insincere, and having a smooth line ladies. Card Multiples: All card multiples indicate surprises and unexpected events. Two 3s: a church or monastery, a growing interest in spirituality. An interest in the religious side of life. Three 3s: Awareness on a higher plane, a religious or mystical experience. Four 3s: religious fanaticism. Card Combination: A + 3 = Loss of ring 4 + 3 = Loss of a purse or wallet A + 3 = A growing problem in the home that may be caused by a meddlesome person. Four of Spades 42.png Suit Influence: Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind. Number Influence: The Number 4: Stability, foundation, solidity, concrete, tangible, buildings, architecture, 4 walls, 4 tires, squaring off, being squared away, fair and square, square deal, etc. How to Read the 4 of Spades: Traditionally the 4 of Spades represents illness, recuperation, and the need for caution. From the stability and squareness of the number 4, the 4 of spades symbolizes the 4 legs and 4 posts of the sick bed. Symbolically the 4 of Spades can also represent a hospital room, a jail cell, or a coffin.

The 4 can represent a physical illness, and all the feelings and experiences associated with sickness such as rest, confinem ent, recuperation, exhaustion, taking it easy, moving at a slower pace, being bed-ridden, feeling cooped up or fenced in, staying home, etc. The 4 can also represent anything that is in a poor state of health, or that is progressing too slowly. With diamonds, this card can indicate a unhealthy money situation, with hearts it can denote lovesickness, with clubs business is slow, etc. The 4 can indicate feelings of disgust. The seeker is fed up or sick and tired of someone or something. Card Multiples: Two 4s: a solid foundation. Three 4s: Fours indicate square things such as tables and rooms, etc. Three 4s can indicate places of amusement such as a restaurant or theater. Four 4s: Conferences, stadiums, arenas, and other large gatherings. Suggested Card Combinations: Face Card + 4 = a person who is ill, rundown, or depressed. A + 4 = a hospital 4 + 4 = a failing marriage, or an STD. 5 of Spades 38.png Suit Influence: Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind. Number Influence: The Number 5 symbolizes active energy, changes, restlessness, communication, the body, and the hands. How to Read the 5 of Spades: Traditionally the 5 of Spades is a card of anger and loss. From an older symbolic meaning of a hand holding a knife, the 5 of Spades can denote cutting someone or something out of ones life. It can also denote a surgical procedure. Specifically, the 5 can denote divorce, breaking old ties, or going it alone. It can indicate quitting ones job, ending a marriage, or dropping out of school depending on the surrounding cards. The separation may be voluntary or not, but it is almost always accompanied by pain, grief, sorrow and tears. The 5 and the 6 are similar in that they both denote a break of some sort. The difference is that with the 5 there are upset emotions, and tears regarding the break up. The 6 denotes a clean break with very little or no pain. For example, a woman wh o is distraught over her recent divorce will usually pull the 5, whereas a woman who is happy to be free would more likely pull the 6 to represent her divorce. My grandmother called the 5 Vdova, which means widow in Italian. This card represents the negat ive emotions associated with he loss of loved one, or the untimely end of a situation or relationship, such as anger, depression, loneliness, fears, tears, resentments and hurt feelings. The 5 represents the left hand and left handedness. Card Multiples: Two 5s The hands or feet. Can indicate that something is within reach, or the power is in ones own grasp. Three 5s Serving the public. Giving of ones self freely. Four 5s - Major change. Reaching a turning point is ones life. Suggested Card Combinations with the 5 of Spades: Face Card + 5 = a divorced person.

4 + 5 = a surgical procedure. 4 + 5 = ending a marriage or splitting up a partnership. 6 of Spades 34.png Suit Influence: Spades: Problems, challenges, delays, frustrations, loneliness, anger, secrets, mysteries, sickness, negative emotions, force, movement, karma, and the mind. Number Influence: The Number 6 symbolizes psychology, harmony, balance, communion, connection, love, trust, sincerity and truth. How to Read the 6 of Spades: Traditionally the 6 of Spades is a card of completion, and it represents the end of one phase and the beginning of a new one. The 6 of Spades can indicate endings of a permanent nature, especially when the situation or relationship has run its course, and there is nothing left to learn from the experience. The 6 represents the need to let go. It can indicate getting rid of something thats not working, and moving on to somethin g new. It can indicate breaking up established patterns. It can denote the dissolution of a business, the breakup of a relationship or partnership, and a parting of ways. The 5 and the 6 are similar in that they both denote a break of some sort. The difference is that with the 5 there are up set emotions, and tears regarding the break up. The 6 denotes a clean break with very little or no pain. For example, a woman who is distraught over her recent divorce will usually pull the 5, whereas a woman who is happy to be free would more likely pull t he 6 to represent her divorce. The 6 also represents a moving force. It can denote moving forward with plans and projects, and making progress. It can de note a change of places such as moving residence or relocating a business. This card can denote moving on emotionally as well as physically. The 6 can also represent a mode of transportation such as a car, truck, bus or train. My grandmother called the 6 Il Scapolo, which means bachelor or single guy in Italian. This card represents the male gender, the masculine side, and all things male. The 6 can refer to an unmarried, male loved one in the seekers life such as a boyfriend, male friend, brother, son, etc. The 6 can also represent anything generally associated with the male gender such as a necktie, cufflinks, boutonnire, toolbox, beard or moustache, as well as items that are unisex today, but were considered manly in olden times, such as pants, razors, etc. Il Scapolo denotes the potential for an attachment, and the 6 can represents an emotional connection, and may indicate a romantic relationship or a love affair. It can indicate a peaceful period when you get a chance to relax and catch your breath. In health matters, the 7 denotes a quick recovery. From the symbolism of the number 7, the 7 represents second chances with a more positive outcome the second time around. This card denotes the happiness and peace of mind that comes from getting a second chance at something. It reveals an opportunity to do something over, or to complete a task that was left undone. The 7 can represent that something is doubled, or that it occurs twice. Card Multiples: Two 7s: signify life changes. With the 7 of Spades it can be a change for the worse. Number Influence: The Number 8: Balance, adaptation, harmony, equilibrium, yin/yang, power, money, status, strength, infinity. The combination of the Suit of Hearts and the number 8 brings emotional balance, harmony and fair play. The 8 of Hearts is a card of pleasure and happy times. It indicates sharing good times with friends and family. It represents mutual love and respect, mutual faith and trust, and emotional fulfillment. The 8 can tell you if the object of your affections is feeling the same way about you. In a business spread, the 8 can indicate a fair deal or a mutually beneficial venture. The 8 can also represent an existing relationship, or a specific loved one in the querents life. My grandmother read the 8 as the relationship card. It didnt mean a new relationship was on the way, but that there was an existing relationship that might influence the situation. For example, when asking about a potential love interest, if the 8 turned up in the reading, it would signify that this person is already involved in an existing relationship. The surrounding cards would indicate if the existing relationship was happy or not. Its important to note that the 8 doesnt necessarily indicate a romantic relationship. The existing relationship might be a controlling parent or friend. It might even be that the person is still attached to an ex even though the actual relationship has ended. In this case, the 8 would indicate that the person is not emotionally available at this time. The 8 can also represent a couple when referred to as a unit. Card Multiples: Two 8s: Pleasure, having a good time. Can indicate music from the symbolism of 88 keys on a piano. Three 8s: Major change. Four 8s: Weighing the pros and cons of a situation. Traditional Meanings: The 9 of Hearts is almost universally known as The Wish Card. It represents the seekers deepest desire, and indicates that the wish will come true within the time span represented by the card spread. This card is considered the very best in the entire deck. Suit Influence: Hearts: Love, romance, happiness, peace, contentment, the emotions, family, friends, honesty, trust and goodwill. Number Influence: The Number 9 represents fortune, dreams, ambitions, attainment, fulfillment, accomplishment, and achievement. How To Read the 9 of Hearts: Symbolically the 9 of Hearts denotes happiness, attainment, gratification, and peace of mind. It represents whatever situation, circumstance, event, or possession in life will make the seeker happy. It can represent a conscious want or a subconscious desire. It often foretells that the seekers deepest desire is about to manifest, and that his or her most treasured dream is about to come true. My grandmother called the 9 of Hearts The Big Wish Card. There is another wish card in the deck-the 3 of Hearts-which she called Small Wishes. If the Small Wish Card appears in the card spread, it indicates that a small wish that the seeker does not expect will come true. The Big Wish Card-the 9-represents the deepest wish or desire on the seekers mind, and indicates that the wish will come true even if surrounded by spades. The Spades would indicate problems and challenges regarding the wish, and would delay but not nullify the good fortune of the 9. For example, if a woman wishes for the love of a specific man, the 9 may appear surrounded by spades to indicate that her destiny is not to be with this particular person. But the fact that the 9 appears in the reading still indicates that her wish will come true. What she is really wishing for is the love and companionship of a happy relationship, and the card would denote that she will eventually receive this wish. Card Multiples: Two 9s: higher education or the travel industry. Three 9s: Changes in philosophy or attitude. Four 9s: Highest level of attainment, fame and celebrity. Suggested Card Combinations: 10 + 9 = a secret or subconscious wish. 9 + 10 = the desire for financial security. 10 of Hearts 19.png Suit Influence: Hearts: Love, romance, happiness, peace, contentment, the emotions, family, friends, honesty, trust and goodwill. Number Influence: The number 10 symbolizes completion of the current cycle, endings and new beginnings, reaching the pinnacle, and excesses. How to Read the 10 of Hearts: The 10 of Hearts symbolizes the pinnacle of happiness and success. It represents all of the good things in life. Specifically, this card denotes possessing the things most wished for, such as emotional security, love, peace of mind, and success in all endeavors. This is an especially positive card that favorably influences all surrounding cards. The 10 can represent marriage, which represents the pinnacle of success, love and happiness for most people. This card can represent marriage in general, or the marriage partner specifically. Unless surrounded by Spades, this card denotes a happy, loving, committed union. Because nowadays many people choose to live together without the marriage certificate, the 10 can represent any long-term, committed relationship.

38

My grandmother called this card linnamorato which means the love sick one, or the one in love. For her this card revealed whatever the seeker was in love with. If the 10 fell next to the card of work, it would indicate that the seeker was in love with his or her job. Falling under a face card it would indicate someone the seeker loved, and falling on top of a face card indicated that the person represented by the face card is in love with someone or something. In general, the 10 can indicate that this person is marriage minded. The 10 represents warm weather, summer time, and the southern regions. Card Multiples: Two 10s: Travel out of state or out of the province. Three 10s: Travel out of the country. Four 10s: World Travel Suggested Card Combinations: 10 + 9 = a honeymoon. 10 + 6 = marriage counseling. Jack of Hearts 15.png Suit Influence: Hearts: Love, romance, happiness, peace, contentment, the emotions, family, friends, honesty, trust and goodwill. Pip Influence: The Jack: A young person of either sex. A man of any age who is young at heart. A child. How to read the Jack of Hearts: Traditionally the Jack of Hearts is a card of romance. In some of the older cartomancy meanings he represents a lazy, immature, emotionally insecure young man; or simply the thoughts of the Queen or King of Hearts. Although Jacks can represent young people of either sex, the Jack of Hearts is most often read as a young male. The Jack of Hearts is a young person of either sex with whom the querent feels an emotional bond or attachment. This card can represent a child of either sex, a male family member such as a son or son-in-law, brother, cousin, etc. The Jack of Hearts can also indicate a boyfriend, a male lover, or close male friend. The J can be an actor or an artist. He can be a writer of poetry, or just a student of the arts. My grandmother called the J Giovin Biond, which translates literally into English as Blond Youth. But the title also carries the connotation of golden child or fair-haired young man which generally indicates someone favored- who can do no wrong. Many Italian women feel this way about their brothers, lovers and sons, so this interpretation is very similar to the more modern meanings for the J. For an older woman, the J can represent her son. For a young girl he might be her boyfriend or brother. For a young male he might represent his brother or best buddy. The Jack of Hearts is almost always a young person with an emotional attachment to the querent. Card Combinations & multiples: King + Jack = an old friend returns. With the J, it can be an old lover. Two Jacks: Legal action or court case pending (especially with 5) Three Jacks: Boys night out, peer pressure. Four Jacks: Classroom, Sports team, fraternity, boys school, boy scouts, organization consisting of mostly young men Queen of Hearts

Suit of Hearts: Hearts: Love, romance, happiness, peace, contentment, the emotions, family, friends, honesty, trust and goodwill. Pip Influence: The Queen: A woman over 18 years of age. How to Read the Queen of Hearts: The Queen of Hearts represents a female loved one in the seekers life. She is loving and maternal, and most often represents a mother or mother figure. If you are reading for a woman, the Queen of Hearts could represent the querent herself. She can also represent the querents mother, sister, daughter, aunt, or best friend. When reading for a man, the Queen of Hearts would be his mother, wife, girlfriend, sister, daughter, or any female family member or loved one. When reading for a young person, the Queen of Hearts almost always represents the mother or mother influence. The Queen of Hearts is an emotional, family oriented person. As a mother she is protective and loving. In her role as friend, she is warm, kind and affectionate; and responds quickly to kindness and friendships. On the down side, she is sensitive and can be hurt easily. As a lover, the Queen of Hearts is passionate and romantic. This woman is creative and artistic, and she enjoys the beautiful things in life. Card Combinations & Multiples: Queen + Jack: an old female friend or girlfriend is returning to the seekers life. 2 Queens: sharing confidences, gossip, can be catty with Queen of Spades. 3 Queens: a group of female friends, a night out with the girls. 4 Queens: Girls school, sorority, any organization consisting of mostly women. King of Hearts

Suit of Hearts: Hearts: Love, romance, happiness, peace, contentment, the emotions, family, friends, honesty, trust and goodwill. Pip Influence: The King: A man over 35 years of age. How to Read the Queen of Hearts: Traditionally, the King of Hearts is a kind, loving man. In coloring, he traditionally represents a man with sandy, dark blond, or light brown hair and brown, blue or hazel eyes. He is a male loved one. The King of Hearts represents a family man. He is usually a male loved one in the querents life. He is protective and paternal, and most often represents a father or father figure. If you are reading for a man, the King of Hearts could represent the querent himself. He can also represent the seekers father, brother, grandfather, uncle, or best friend. When reading for a woman, the King of Hearts would be her father, husband, boyfriend, brother, or any male family member or loved one. In my experience, when reading for a young person, the King of Hearts almost always represents the father or father influence. The king of Hearts is an emotional, family oriented person. He is passionate, artistic, and good-natured. On the down side, he is sensitive and can be easily offended. Card Combinations & Multiples: King + Jack: a male friend from the past is returning to the seekers life. With the J it could be an old love interest. 2 King: a man in uniform policeman, fireman, etc. Shaking hands on a business deal. 3 Kings: success, making a name for oneself. 4 Kings: public recognition, and organization consisting of mostly men such as a mens club.

he Wish Card The 9 of Hearts I get a lot of questions about the Wish Card (9 of Hearts), and how it interacts with other cards. This morning I thought I would post some specific information on how the 9 of Hearts works for me, and highlight a few common combinations that seem to occur repeatedly in my readings. The cards seem always to accentuate the positive, and the wish card never appears simply to indicate that a wish does not come true. When the 9 shows up in a reading, it always means you get your wish. The position of the wish card in relation to surrounding cards will modify, but never nullify, its meaning. The Wish Card with Spades: When the 9 is followed or topped by a spade, it indicates that the wish is delayed, or that there are obstacles to overcome before the wish can be granted. The 9 followed by the 10 will indicate that the querent is afraid that the wish will come true, and may be blocking the wish on a subconscious level. Its possible that a person may want something wholeheartedly, and yet be terrified by the prospect of having the thing desired. This combination denotes that the wish will eventually materialize, but some work must be done first to clear the way. The 9 + 10 can also reveal deservability issues. The querent may desire the wish, but because he or she does not feel deserving of the dream, a lack of prosperity consciousness may block or delay the flow of abundance. In order to speed the manifestation of the wish, the querent would need to work on removing the mental or emotional blocks to success. Another very common combination is the 9 followed by the 9. The 9 represents a disappointment, or things not turning out exactly as planned. This combination indicates that you still get your wish, but but not in the way you had hoped or expected. The 9. can also indicate forces that are out of ones control, and may denote that karmic influences are at work. When the 9 influences the wish card it usually means there is some kind of karmic lesson involved which will promote spiritual and emotional growth. The 9 followed by the 3 usually denotes that the person cannot decide on what to wish for. The querent may have several conflicting desires, and may be unable to focus on one particular wish. This combination can also indicate that the querent really does not know what he or she wants out of life. Sometimes the cards surrounding this combination will help the querent crystallize the true heart s desire. The Wish Card with Clubs: Clubs represent work, and progress through effort. When the 9 is followed or topped by a club, it indicates that some effort may be required on the part of the querent in order to fully manifest the desire. The 5 represents taking action, and going after whatever is desired. The 9 followed by the 5 will indicate that the wish is within reach, and that success rest in the querents own hands. This combination indicates that the querent has the willpower and confidence to overcome any obstacle to reaching the desired goal. The manifestation of the dream will require some effort, but all that is need is for the querent to go after whatever is desired. The Wish Card with Diamonds: Diamonds represent energy and movement. When the 9 is followed or topped by a diamond, it indicates that the wish is already on the way to materializing. All of the necessary conditions are in place to support the manifestation of the querents dream. The 9 followed by the 9 will indicate that the querents wish is tied up with someone elses desires, and another person will be instrumental in helping the querent realize his or her dream. Sometimes this combination can denote a shared dream, or that someone else is completely supportive of the querents needs and desires. The Wish Card with Hearts: Hearts represent love and happiness, pleasure and peace of mind. When the 9 is followed or topped by a heart, it indicates that the wish will manifest exactly as the querent hopes and dreams. The 10 represents emotional security, marriage, love, and happiness. The 9 followed by the 10 is arguably the very best combination of cards possible. It will indicate that you get your wish and live happily ever after. The Wish Card with a Face Card: The Face Cards (Court Cards) most often represent the people in the querents life, and how they affect important events. When the 9 is topped or followed by a Face Card, it indicates that the person represented by the Court Card will play an important role in the manifestation of the querents wish.

41

If the Court Card is a spade, it may indicate a rival, or someone who is interfering with the querents wish. The 9 + Q or K may reveal that the querents dream lover is already attached to someone else, or that the dream job belongs to another. In this case, the cards will indicate that you get your dream lover or dream job, but not necessarily the exact person or position you were hoping for Do We Always Get Our Wish? Yes, the 9 will always denote that the wish comes true, but sometimes the wish card will represent the bigger picture, and not our self-limiting desires. For example, a couple of years ago we were in the market for a new home. We fell in love with a particular house, and placed a bid for purchase. I pulled a few cards to see whether or not the cards supported the deal, and I got the A followed by the 9. The obvious interpretation is that the home would be ours. Well, we were outbid for the house we wanted, and lost the deal. Not more than a week later, we got first bid on another home that was far better suited to our needs. It was larger, but less expensive than the previous house. Within 3 days we signed the mortgage and took possession. The cards had predicted that I would have the exact home I wanted. I simply had not yet met my dream home at the time of the reading!

The Death Card Ace of Spades The Death Card (Ace of Spades) is probably the most misunderstood card in the deck. Many people fear the Death Card, and Ive actually heard clients gasp audibly when Ive turned the card over in a reading. Its unfortunate that the Ace of Spades gets such a bad rap. In practice, it rarely predicts physical death, and it is one of the more hopeful of all the Spades. The Aces begin their respective suits, and are associated with the symbolic meanings of the number one. The number one represents beginnings and fresh starts, and all of the Ace bring new people, places, and things into the querents life. The Ace of Spades is the only Ace that also represents an ending, and a new beginning through a loss, removal or release. I say that the Ace of Spades is hopeful because it represent a transformation and a re-building, or a re-commitment after the loss. Specifically, the Ace of Spades is symbolic of the mind. It represents those things that affect the mind such as worry, conflicting ideas, and decisions. When the A appears in a layout, it will usually highlight whatever issues are currently pressing on the querents mind. In most cases the matter involves a choice or decision to be made, or some action to be taken. The Death Card With Hearts: The position of the A will determine the timing of the influence. If A is followed by a heart, it indicates that querent has experienced an emotional transformation in the past, and is re-building anew. Conversely, when the A follows the heart, the querent may be currently facing emotional turmoil which will require a choice or decision to be made. The positioning of the cards in the spread will also provide a clue as to whether the action occurs in the past, present or future. For example, the 4 followed by the A would indicate that the querent faces a decision regarding the reconciliation of a marriage, romantic relationship, or friendship. I have found this to be a very common combination that appears when the querent is undecided about whether to end the relationship, or give it another go. When the A is followed by the 4, it usually indicates a reconciliation after a very rocky period. It would denote a re-commitment to the partner after the decision is made to stick it out and make the relationship work. The Death Card With Clubs: Clubs represent the practical aspects of life such as work, and how we use our free time every day. The A followed by a Club would indicate a pending decision regarding work, study, or play. If the A hold the initial position in the 3-Card Layout, it indicate that querent is the one making the decision. In the middle position, the decision may be mutual after discussion and deliberation. In the final position, the decision may be made by someone else, but the results of the decision would directly influence the querent based on the information provided by the surrounding cards. A very common card combination that I see a lot in my readings is the 5 followed by the A. The 5 is an action card that denotes taking the reins in a situation to resolve a challenge or concern. The 5 + A would indicate that the querent is struggling with the decision about whether or not to take control of a situation. The cards surrounding this combination will offer clues as to the nature of the decision, and will describe the matter at hand. The 5 falling last would indicate that the querent has already made the decision to take action and handle the issue. The surrounding cards will provide specific information about the situation that requires attention. The Death Card With Diamonds: Diamonds represent the material world, and how we make use of our physical and mental powers. The A followed by a Diamond would denote a decision regarding finances, personal resources, or personal power.

42

For example, the A followed by the 8 would indicate a decision to bring ones financial situation into balance. The querent faces an important decision regarding planning for the future in terms of saving or investing money. When the A falls last, it indicates financial worries, and denotes that the querent may be forced to tighten the purse strings due to some financial setback or reversal. The Death Card With Other Spades: When the A is surrounded by other spades, it reveals its nastier meanings such as anger, resentment, anxiety, despair, depression, mental illness, and feeling overburdened by worries. The A can represent the mind in a clinical sense, and with the 4 it can denote depression or mental illness. The 8 is another health card that can represent a doctor, and with the A it can refer to a mental health specialist such as a psychiatrist or psychologist. The A with the 3 shows mental confusion, hazy thinking, or someone who is scatterbrained. The A with the 10 can indicate obsessive or compulsive behavior. With the 9 the A can denote thoughts of self sabotage, and when the 5 appears in the mix, it may be a warning that someone is thinking of doing physical harm to him or herself. A very common combination is the A + 7 which would indicate intoxication or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The Death Card With Other Aces: In addition to their specific symbolic meanings, all of the Aces also represent new beginnings and making a fresh start. When combined with the A, the new beginning is a rebirth or rebuilding after a loss or release of some kind. Two Aces always denote a major life change, and when the A is included, the transformation usually includes a life lesson. With the A it reveals an emotional rebirth after a period of mourning. With the A it would represent a rebuilding of ones financial status after a major setback or reversal. With the A the combination would indicate the rebuilding of a social or business situation. The position of the A in relation to the other Ace will determine if the renewal has already been accomplished, or must be still be faced. Of course the symbolic meanings of these combinations would still apply as an additional interpretation for each combination. For example, A + A = concern over a family matter, or a decision regarding the home A + A = decision regarding some important paperwork A + A = concern over whether or not to accept an invitation, or worry over some news or a message. Its important to keep in mind that the cards can be interpreted on various levels, and each interpretation would be valid and pertinent to a different area of the querents life. Very often one or another of the interpretations will make more sense in answering the querents specific question. The Death Card With a Face Card: When the A falls with a Face Card (Court Card), it does not generally predict that persons immediate demise. :) It would simply indicate that the person depicted by the Face Card is influenced by the concern or decision represented by the A. Generally, if the A falls to the right of the Face Card, the decision would be made by the person represented by the card. If the A falls to the left, the decision will be made by the querent, but it will affect the person represented by the Face card in some way. When Does the Death Card mean Death? The A can indicate death of the physical body, but only in combination with other Spades which denote loss, separation, and removal such as the 2, 5 or 6. For more detailed information about reading death in the cards, please check out my previous post on Death in the Cards. The Playing Card 5s Hands and Feet Posted by Cardseer on December 6, 2007 My grandmother read the 5s in the playing card deck to represent the hands and feet based on the idea that these extremities are comprised of five fingers and five toes. She used to say that you could tell a lot about a persons interests and motivation by where their feet take them, and where they stick their fingers, and so the 5s were key cards in her readings. The 5 of Hearts: The 5 specifically refers to the right hand, and can represent doing the right thing. It can symbolize handling a situation in a fair and honorable manner. As a member of the suit of Hearts, the 5 represents a tender touch. It can denote holding hands, a warm handshake, or extending ones hand to someone in friendship. It can denote holding ones hand over ones heart and making a promise or pledge. This card may also refer to a womans hands, or gloves which were considered fashionable in the 1950s and 60s. The 5 can also represent the right foot. It symbolizes putting ones best foot forward, and may represent joyful movements such as dancing, or playing footsie. The 5 of Clubs:

43

The 5 is symbolic of ones grasp, and indicates taking action with ones hands. In a general sense, this card shows the querent reaching for something, or taking matters in hand, and is a reminder that success lies in the querents own hands. Specifically the 5 denotes working with ones hands. It can denote building or manufacturing something. The 5 can also represent a foot in forward motion. It is an action card that denotes racing forward toward ones goals. The 5 of Diamonds: The 5 represents a coin in hand. It reveals what the querent is holding on to that helps him or her feel secure, or whatever gives the querent a sense of self worth. It might be a certain attitude, or way of looking at the world. It could also be a talent or belief, or even a material possession. The 5 will often denote that the querent is dying to get their hands on something. The querent may be attracted to a certain material possession, a job, or even a particular person. The 5 also represents maintaining a strong foothold, and may denote stubbornness, or holding on to something familiar. The 5 of Spades: The 5 refers to the left hand or foot, and is symbolic of a hand holding a blade. This card will usually indicate whatever the querent is trying cut out of his or her life. The 5 can also indicate taking a aggressive stance, or feeling the need to protect oneself and ones assets. The 5 is also symbolic of the feet in retreat. It can indicate backing out on a promise or deal, or abandoning a relationship or project, and often represents running out on someone or something. The 5s in Multiples: Two 5s in combination would denote something within reach, or would indicate that the power to achieve ones goals resides in one s own hands, particularly if one of the 5s is the 5. Another card sandwiched between two 5s would represent something the querent has control over, or something held in ones hands. Three 5s can show how we use our hands to serve others, and give freely of our talents and abilities. Four 5s represent both hands and feet, and denote where our hands and feet have taken us in life. Suggested Combinations With the 5s: 5 + 5 = The 5 in combination with another 5 can denote injury to ones hand or foot. A couple of years ago, I pulled the 5 + 5 + 6 in a daily draw. Later that day I nearly severed the tip of my finger while trying to slice through a particularly hard chunk of aged Parmesan cheese. The 5 with the 4 or 8 could also denote illness or injury affecting ones hands or feet. Here are a few other combination that immediately spring to mind: 5 + 5 = An important opportunity is at hand, denotes that ones dreams are within reach. This combination also indicates the creative use of ones hands, and may denote someone artistic who enjoys sewing, crafts or design. 5 + 5 = Can denote getting ones hands on a valuable piece of property. This combination can also represent someone who makes money by working with their hands. 5 + 5 = Can denote allowing money or something valuable to slip right through ones fingers. Try putting together your own combinations with the 5s. Its fun, and its a great way to practice putting the cards together in a meaningful way. Dont be limited by just the meanings I outline above. Try to incorporate some of the other symbolic meanings for the 5s as well. For example, heres another fun combination to get you started: 5 + 5 + 5 = Could represent a womans handbag or purse. The 5 indicates something feminine or girly, the 5 indicates something held in ones grasp, and the 5 indicates holding something valuable (money, credit cards, etc.) :) The Male Gender/Soul Mate Card Posted by Cardseer on December 16, 2007 6-of-hearts.jpg The 6 of Hearts The Male Gender/Soul Mate Card There have been a number of questions recently about the 6 of Hearts, and how to interpret this card in a spread. So this morning I thought I would provide a bit more detail on how I use the 6 of Hearts in my own readings. For me, the 6 of Hearts is a key card in that it it almost always represents something or someone important to the querent. For this reason, the 6 of Hearts can serve as a jumping off point to begin a reading, or transition a layout.

44

The 6 of Hearts may cause confusion because it carries several important meanings which may not seem related at first glance. In this post well take a look at each category of meaning, and youll find that once you get a feel for this card, the various meanings wont seem so disparate. Keep in mind that any or all of the meanings may apply to a reading. The Male Gender Card The 6 of Hearts is the Male Gender Card. It represents all things manly and masculine. If you think of the male hero of a saucy romance novel, youll get a pretty good picture of the general attributes associated with this card. The 6 represents the qualities associated with the male romantic lead such as strength, bravery, courage, faith, trust, sympathy, gallantry, sensitivity, and a willingness to risk life and limb to honor and protect. This card can denote a masculine point of view. It can also represent things that are generally associated with the male gender such as carousing, or hunting, or sporting a beard. Of course many women also possess these qualities, or enjoy these activities (with the exception of sporting a beard), and can be thought to be tapping into their masculine side. The 6 can represent an actual male person in the querents life. He is usually unmarried, although not necessarily unattached. He is almost always someone loved by the querent such as a boyfriend, male best friend, or male family member. When I read for a young woman, the 6 will usually represent her sweetheart, or a new love interest about the enter her life. For an older woman, the 6 will usually represent her son. For a young man, the 6 most often represents his brother or a good friend. For an older gentleman, the 6 almost always represents his son. The surrounding cards will describe the person and the events affecting him. For example, when falling with Spades, the 6 would represent a troubled young man, or that the querent is worried about a male loved one. The Soul Mate Card In numerology, the number 6 is associated with the planet Venus which represents love and romance. The Suit of Hearts is also ruled by Venus, and this double Venus energy accounts for another important meaning for the 6: a relationship or love affair. The 6 is the Soul Mate Card. It indicates a karmic love relationship which brings lessons and the opportunity for emotional and spiritual growth. The surrounding cards will describe the relationship, and any potential problems or challenges that must be faced. The 6 Means Communication: The number 6 also deals with interactions on all levels including physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, etc. As a result, all of the playing card 6s represent communication in one from or another. The 6 specifically denotes enlightenment, or illumination on either a mental or spiritual level. In his book Its Written In the Cards, Dr. Leo Louis Martello relates that an older symbolic meaning for the 6 was a book. Therefore this card can also denote knowledge, study and learning. A physical book, and the act of reading is usually represented by the 6, but acquiring knowledge in a scholastic sense would belong to the 6. How Do I Know Which Meaning Applies In My Reading? Naturally the specific question you ask the cards will help you determine the most appropriate interpretation for the 6. In a larger layout, or daily draw where no question is asked, any or all of the interpretations may apply to your reading. As an example, I want to share a sample three card combination that was part of a larger layout for a young female querent. In this case I was able to read the 6 three different ways, and all three interpretations were meaningful to the querent: The first interpretation shows that the querents brother (6) is planning a trip (9) that will be delayed (4) perhaps because of illness (4). The querent related that her brother is planning a trip to Amsterdam in the spring. I advised her that he may decide to postpone the trip due to a short illness. I mentioned to the querent that the 9 and 4 in combination also made me think of motion sickness, and the querent related that her boyfriend (6) has a horrible time flying, boating, or riding in the back seat of a car because of motion sickness. This had caused travel complications in the past, and I advised her that his motion sickness may cause another delayed trip (Spade on 9) for the two of them as well (9 in middle). There were other cards in the reading that pointed to problems the querent was experiencing in her relationship, and this combination also confirms that she feels the relationship (6) is not moving (9) in the direction she had hoped (Spade on 9), and shes feeling confined and unhappy (4). Basically, these cards show that she is feeling sick (4) of the lack of progress in the relationship. This combination of cards did not suggest to me the alternative meanings for the 6 of study, learning and knowledge, but that doesnt mean that those meanings couldnt apply here as well. I hope this helps clarify the the 6 for you. Happy reading!

King and Jack: An Old Friend Comes Back Posted by Cardseer on September 9, 2012 Many students of cartomancy struggle with the court cards. I know I did when I first started, and I still do from time to time. I think its natural because there are so many court cards in the deck, and its not always easy determining who is who in a reading. Luckily when two face cards fall side-by-side, they can be combined to indicate a single meaning. One of the most common and useful combinations is the King and Jack. The combination of King and Jack can predict the return of someone from the past, or the return to a situation or location from the past, such as returning to a former job, or moving back home. When this combination refers to a person, the King will generally describe the person (man), and the Jack will describe the dynamics of the prior relationship. Likewise, the Queen and Jack would describe a woman returning the querents life, and that prior relationship. For example

The above combination would predict an old lover returning. The King of Clubs describes someone with medium coloring, brown hair and brown or hazel eyes. Alternately, you could use the characteristics associated with the King of Clubs to describe him. Hes ambitious, he has good business sense, hes practical and organized, he can be stubborn, but always sensible, etc. The Jack of Hearts would show that the dynamics of the prior relationship were romantic in nature. Its important to use your intuition in choosing an appropriate description based on the suit symbol because of course not all brown-haired men are practical and organized, and not all practical and organized men have brown hair. For more information on the traits and characteristics associated with the court cards, please see my article on The Court Cards as People. Here are some suggestions for interpreting the dynamics of the prior relationship based on the Jack suits Jack of Hearts: romantic relationship, family connection, close friend Jack of Diamonds: professional relationship, colleague, family connection through marriage, acquaintance Jack of Clubs: friendship, co-worker, classmate, team mate Jack of Spades: enemy, rival, relationship that ended badly What follows is an example of an actual three-card combination that was part of a larger spread that predicts a relationship developing with a woman from the past. The querent is a single male who was hoping for a new love in his life.

The Queen of Spades shows a woman with very dark hair and dark-brown eyes. We might also describe her as strong-willed and sensual. Intuitively, I felt that the Spade represented her marital status as divorced. The Jack of Clubs tells us that this woman is someone the querent already knows from the past. She is an old friend, or perhaps an former co-worker. The 3 of Hearts shows a romantic relationship developing with this woman. Six months later the querent was re-acquainted with an old school-mate of his sister, a lovely blonde lady who is sensual, strong-willed and divorced. A romantic relationship ensued. Heres another example

The querent is freelance contractor who is asking about potential business contracts during the next three months. In this case the King of Clubs can represent a business rather than an individual person. The Jack of Diamonds shows a prior professional relationship with the business. The Two of Clubs is an upcoming offer. The cards indicate that the querent will receive a contract in the next three months from a business that he worked with previously. Jack and King? When the Jack comes first I dont generally read it as a return to the past. Instead the Jack will often represent a child, and the King or Queen will denote the gender. As before, the Jack will define the relationship of the young person to the querent, and the King or Queen will describe the person. For example

These cards could represent a young girl or female child. The Jack of Hearts denotes the relationship as a family member, and the Queen of Diamonds describes the child as intelligent, independent, talkative, unpredictable, temperamental, etc.

Its important to note that all of these combinations are merely suggestions. As always, youll need to rely on the context of the reading and your intuition to determine the best interpretation. For example, the Queen + Jack might also represent a mother and son, the Jack and King might represent a boy and his father, etc.

How to Interpret the Cartomancy Line of 5 Cards Posted by Cardseer on November 9, 2011 I do most of my readings by phone, and Ive come to rely on the simple Line of 5 Cards in place of the more traditional card spreads. Phone clients pay by the minute, and theyre not very tolerant of the extra time it takes to lay out an elaborate spread. It takes me a few seconds to shuffle the cards while I tune into the clients voice and energy, then I cut the deck and draw off five cards. Nine times out of ten, the cards will highlight the exact reason for the clients call without my having to ask the client any questions. Heres an example of how I interpret the Cartomancy Line of 5 Cards The first thing I look at is trends and patterns in the cards. I take note of the ratio of red cards to black. I notice how many cards of each suit appear, and which suits do not appear in the spread. I consider the sequence of numbers, and any interactions between the face cards. Most importantly I look to the suit of the card that ends the line because that card will represent the outcome of the situation. The first thing I notice in the above reading is that the red cards dominate the reading giving it a positive spin. The problematic black cards are surrounded by red cards showing that the problems or challenges are minor or temporary in nature. Next I notice that only hearts and spades appear in the spread indicating an emotional or relationship matter. I surmise that the client wants to know about a relationship, and that proved to be the case. Finally I interpret the individual cards. The flow of action in the spread moves from left to right, and the timing also moves from left to right. The Cartomancy Line of 5 Cards is immediate. The first card describes an ongoing situation or the recent past usually no more than two weeks ago up to the present. The final card reveals the outcome of the situation usually no more than a month into the future. The 4 of hearts is a relationship card, but its still a relatively low number, so the relationship described by this card is not usually serious. The 4 of hearts can denote a sexual relationship, and of course not all sexual relationships can be considered serious. Because the 4 of hearts is the first card of the spread, we know that this is an existing sexual relationship, and not something in the future. The 7 of spades is a change for the worse that usually shows stagnation and frustration. The sexual relationship is experiencing setbacks. Were still at the beginning of the line, so we know that this reflects the current situation. The client is feeling frustrated by an existing sexual relationship. The Jack of Spades is a young person of either sex. The client is a heterosexual female, so we can assume the Jack is male, and that he represents her lover. The middle card of the line of 5 usually anchors the reading. In other words, the middle card will provide a focus for the events depicted in the previous and following cards. Its not surprising that in a reading about an unhappy sexual alliance the partner would appear as the middle card. Notice that the Jack is looking toward the right toward the future, and away from the problems and frustrations in his past. We can determine from the interaction of the face card that the partner is not interested in the problems and setbacks represented by the 7 of spades. The Jack is looking toward the 6 of hearts, and that is where his interests lay. The 6 of hearts is another love card, but because its a higher number than the 4, it represents a more serious alliance. The Jack of spades is interested in taking the relationship to the next step, and that may be what is causing the difficulties in the current arrangement. The Jack of Spades is usually a sexy guy with a tendency toward jealousy and possessiveness. If the client is only interested in a casual sexual relationship, the Jacks possessiveness could be whats creating the problems. The 8 of hearts is the couple card. It represents compatibility and sharing. As the outcome card it shows that the couple will reach an agreement. Because that 6 of hearts is followed by another heart, the positive influence shows that the couple will take the relationship to the next level and become an official couple. If the 2 of hearts had ended the line of cards instead of the 8 or hearts, it would still show an agreement and a positive outcome, but the 2 is a smaller number than even the 4, so the indication would be that they resolve their differences and agree to be friends. If the 10 of hearts, the highest relationship card of the deck, had ended the line of cards, the indication would be taking the relationship to the ultimate level of commitment marriage.

Sure, heres some more information on how I approach the court cards: The Kings

47

In card combinations, a king will almost always represent a mature man either in age or behavior. For example, the King of Spades can represent a divorced or separated man who often appears as an ex-husband, ex-lover, or ex-friend in the cards. He can also be read according to his Spade nature. His positive traits are sexy, charming, intense, mysterious, determined, and powerful. On the negative side, he might be aggressive, secretive, demanding, etc. Because the King of Spades is a natural born leader, he may often represent a man in your life who is in a position of power over you. This could be your father, employer, landlord, professor, or even husband. I know that all of these levels of meaning can seem overwhelming to the beginning card reader, but youll find that soon enough your intuition will kick in to help you choose the most appropriate interpretation. (Please see my article on The Court Cards As People for specific information on how to identify the other face cards in your reading, and suggestions on how to read the directions they face.) In a card spread where the individual positions carry specific meaning, the King can also sometimes be read as a quality. The King is top man on the totem pole. He represents influence and authority. The King can represents the querents authority in a reading regardless of whether the querent is male or female, or young or old. The specific suit will usually give a clue as to the area of influence. For example, the King of Spades can indicate that the querent is being overbearing in a situation. The King of Hearts can show protectiveness. The King of Clubs shows taking full responsibility for resolving a problem or issue. The King of Diamonds can denote taking financial or intellectual control of a situation. In combination, the Kings can be read as men interacting with each other. Two Kings is symbolic of a handshake, and can indicate some kind of partnership or mutually beneficial deal. Two Kings can also represent a man in uniformthe first King would represent the man, and the 2nd his uniform. For example, the two Kings could represent a policeman, a fireman, a rescue worker, or a military officer. As a side note, two Jacks can also represent a man who wears a uniform for work, but not necessarily as a symbol of authority. Groups of Kings would indicate an event or organization consisting of mostly men. The Queens The Queen is ageless (meaning she can be represent a female of any age) and the Jack is a young male or female, so this pairing is wide open to a multitude of possible interpretations. In other words, there is not a general meaning I can give you that will always apply to any Court Card pairing. Here are some guidelines that work for me: When two or more Face Cards of any matching suit appear together, they can represent a family connection. Therefore, the Queen + Jack could be mother and son, or sister and brother, or older sister and younger sister, or even a young married couple. The combination of Queen + Jack can also be read as an old female friend coming back into your life. The Q:heart: might indicate old love interest returning. The Queen of Spades could be an old rival. The Queen of Clubs could be an old work associate, and the Queen of Diamonds could be a long lost relative returning. Two Face Cards of the same suit can also denote compatibility. For example, the King and Queen with matching suit will usually indicate a married couple. The Jack of the same suit often represents their offspring. Sometimes the Queen + Jack can indicate a woman who is involved with a younger man. The Queen can also represent the subconscious. or something happening behind the scenes. In a reading she can reveal the subconscious motivations that are influencing the situation. For example, the Queen of Diamonds could denote someone subconsciously motivated by money and/or power. Then on top of all of that, you can also figure in the specific personality traits associated with each suit. So as you can see, the possibilities are almost endless. Your intuition is always your best guide when interpreting the Court Card combinations. The Jacks Ive found in my own readings that the Jacks almost always represents young men, although they can also represent young women or children of either sex. The specific suit can be used to determine interests or personality traits to help place the person in the querents life. Jacks almost always represent people for me, but in layouts with individual spots that convey a specific meaning (such as the Celtic Cross or 5Pointed Star) the Jacks do often represent thoughts or ideas. Of course the card almost never mean only one thing, so its also possible to read a Jack first as a specific person in the querents life, and then again as an important thought or idea. I use the Jacks in two ways to represent thoughts or ideas. First, if the King or Queen of the matching suit appears in a reading, the corresponding Jack could represent that persons thoughts, and the surrounding cards would describe what was on this persons mind. Secondly, the Jacks can represent the querents thoughts, or an idea being contemplated, particularly if no other Face Cards appear in the spread. In this case, the Jack of Hearts could represent thoughts of love or family, the Jack of Diamonds = thoughts of money or power, the Jack of Clubs = thoughts of work, business or study, and Jack of Spades: would denote thoughts concerning a challenge or problem. The Jacks can also be read as something new or something offered, but this has rarely been the case for me.

48

When the Jacks appear in pairs, I use the one falling on top (to the right) to convey the mood of the union or encounter. If a heart falls on top, it would show cooperation, and a friendly interaction such as two good friends sharing a mutual experience. If a Club falls on top, then the interaction is more practical such as shaking hands on a business deal. If a diamond falls on top, there is probably money or scheming involved. A Spade on top almost always denotes a problem or challenge, and can indicate trouble or conflict between the two young persons. I have had the pair of Jacks (most often the Jack of Diamonds + Jack of Spades ) indicate a lawsuit in my readings. Usually the 5 of Diamonds is also somewhere in the spread indicating a court case. The Jack of Hearts + Jack of Spades would clue me in to a disagreement. Of course the surrounding cards would also influence the final interpretation, and any pair could denote a quarrel with Spades. Cartomancy Tips Interpreting Combinations in a Row of Cards Posted by Cardseer on May 29, 2012 These guidelines refer to a line of cards when no specific question is asked. When I interpret a line of cards, whether a line of five or seven or nine, or part of an even larger spread, I employ the following basic guidelines: The card that begins the row represents the main subject for that line of cards The card falling to the right will always modify its neighbor to the left The final card in the row reveals the outcomethat being the case, you can have a long line of spades, and if the row ends in heart, it means all will end well.
