Technical Description Report Date: To: From: Subject: Thursday, June 9, 2011 Howard Willison, CEO Husain Pulav, Senior Engineer Flashlight Description for General Audience

In this report, I am providing you with in-depth technical aspects of our brand new flashlight Rayovac Value Plus 2D Economy Flashlight which is cheap, easy to use and comes in handy in case of emergencies, blackouts, etc. This report is specially meant for general audience so I have mostly used non-technical words and explained every concept in detail for their better understanding. This report consists of general description of a flashlight, description of different body parts/sections, its functioning, and its operating description. `

General Description:
1. Definition: A flashlight is also called as an electric torch. It is a hand-held portable battery operated
light source. The light is produced by the bulb in the flashlight which is powered by two D size batteries.

2. Purpose: The main purpose of flashlight is to provide light in the absence of light. The flashlight can
also be mounted on the helmet which can serve its purpose to people in mining fields and camping. It can be used in general purpose work like searching in dark places, garage or your cars trunk and they can be mounted on bicycles too.

3. Overall Description: Rayovac Value Plus 2D Economy Flashlight is a very low cost general
purpose flashlight. It is 8 inches long, 2 inches wide from the head and 1 inch from the base. The whole casing of flashlight is made up of plastic and sometimes the lens in the front is made of glass. It has a switch for its operation which is also made of plastic. It has a shape of cylindrical tube and it is black color. It is light in weight and easy to carry.

4. Main Parts: Figure 1 shows that there are two main sections in a flashlight: head section and body
section. Each section has many parts which have their own unique functionality. We will learn all the parts one by one with their technical details in the below given description.

Parts Description:

1. Head Section: The head section is comprised of five parts: Bulb: The Bulb is the most important part in a flashlight because it generates light. It is
circular in shape and mostly small in size so that it can fit in the head case. It is made of a very thin glass and has a tungsten wire in it which glows when connected to an electric supply. The bulb is connected to the bulb holder.

Bulb Holder: The bulb holder holds the bulb and supplies electric current to the bulb. It is
very small in size and rectangular in shape. It supplies the electric current required to power the bulb. It is connected by the positive terminal of a D size battery along with the copper strip.

Lens: The transparent lens is made of plastic. Its purpose is to protect the bulb from damage
and dust. It is bigger in size than the bulb and circular in shape. It is connected to the head casing.

Reflector: The reflector is a mirror which reflects light in a specific direction. It is made of a
small dome shaped mirror placed inside the head case around the bulb. It reflects light coming out from the bulb. It is connected to the inner side of the head case.

Head Casing: Head case protects the head section from damage. It is made of hard plastic but
light in weight. It connects and keeps intact all the parts which come under head section. It is connected with the rest of the body casing.

2. Body Section: The body section comprises of five parts: Switch: The switch breaks or makes an electric circuit. When the switch is in On position, it
completes the circuit by providing electric current from batteries to the bulb which glows, and when it is in Off position then there is no supply of electric current to bulb. Hence resulting in no light. The switch is a plastic button and it can be used by a thumb. If the button is pressed in up direction, then it will be On, and if it is pressed down, then it will be Off as shown in figure 2. It is mounted on top of the body casing.

Battery: The batteries provide energy to the bulb which helps it to glow. A flashlight uses two
D size batteries which have an approximately 7-hour run time. They are big, cylindrical in shape and also heavy. Almost half the weight of the flashlight is a result of these batteries. They are connected to each other in a similar fashion as shown in figure 2. The positive terminal of the first battery is connected to the bulb holder and the positive terminal of the second battery is connected to the negative terminal of the first battery. The negative terminal of the second battery is connected to the spring which completes a circuit.

Spring: The spring is a metallic coil. It is a thin copper coil on which the battery resides. It
makes easier for the user by helping in popping out the drained battery. Its one end is connected to the battery and other to the copper strip.

Copper Strip: The copper strip is a small thin metallic strip used to connect an electric circuit.
The switch joins the strip to the bulb holder or not. The strip is placed parallel to the batteries connecting the bulb holder from the head section to the spring in the body section.

Body Casing: The body case has the same function as the head case. It is the handle of the
flashlight which is made of plastic. It also keeps all the parts intact and connected to each other. The body case is connected to the head case.

Operating Description:
1. How to use it: The flashlight is battery operated. You have to use 2 D size batteries and place them in
the body section in similar fashion as shown in figure 2 and explained above. Once the batteries are placed in order, join the head and body sections and press the switch to the On position with your thumb to light the torch and push it to Off to turn it off.

2. Maintenance: Flashlights are very user friendly and easy to maintain. Once batteries are drained then
you have to replace them with new, same size batteries. Also when dust accumulates in front of the lens, you can use a small cloth to wipe it clean. If the tungsten metal inside the bulb breaks, then the bulb will no longer glow, and then you have to replace that bulb with a new one.

3. Limitations: The most important limitation of a flashlight is its battery life which is only up to 7
hours. Also the range of a general purpose flashlight is up to few meters. It is neither water resistant nor unbreakable.
