What is terroir?
The French term, terroir (pronounced tear-wah), is the term for the conditions that make a specific grape-growing site, and its wine, distinctive. It comes from a philosophy, originated in Europe, that a multitude of influences in nature surrounding a vineyard, or wine region, create a wines character. These natural factors include soil composition, day and nighttime temperatures, the amount of rainfall, the direction of the sun, just to name a few. Terroir explains why some of the best California Pinot Noir, for example, originate in the regions of Carneros and Russian River. They may be separated by about 30 miles but they share similar soils and experience the same cooling effects from bodies of water nearby either the ocean, in the case of the Russian River area, or San Pablo Bay for the Carneros region. Both regions produce rich and complex wines made from Pinot Noir grapes that reflect their similar terroir. Over centuries of winemaking around the world, it has been learned that the uniqueness of a specific location is what creates the personality of a wine. Although the French word terrior has no English translation, it has become a term used everywhere to describe this interaction of the many factors that influence a grape-growing site. So, the next time you taste a great wine, whether Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel, take notice of where the grapes were grown. If a distinct site is listed on the label as the origin of the grapes, such as the name of a specific vineyard or an official wine geographic region (also known as an appellation) know that you are tasting more than just the grapes that made the wine. You are experiencing terrior everything in nature that makes that site or region, unique.

Greeting you at the doorway to Sonoma wine country sits one of its jewels, Gloria Ferrer Caves and Vineyards. Sparkling wine is the perfect choice for celebrating special occasions, but because its so food friendly, its ideal for everyday enjoyment and a visit here is the best way to finish your holidays! Exuding Spanish charm while retaining the relaxed, casual elegance for which Sonoma County is known, the winery experience begins the moment you drive through the gates and wind past the olive trees. A harmonious marriage of Catalan and California mission design, Gloria Ferrer Caves and Vineyards is inspired by the Ferrer familys 11th-century farmhouse in Sant Sandurni dAnoia, Spain. They have just been named one of the Top 100 Wineries of the year by Wine & Spirits Magazine and have more than 30 different wines score over 90 points from Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Wine & Spirits. With Valentines Day right around the corner, the sight of a bottle of bubbles at the table is an engaging, fun and simple way to elevate any experience, be it an intimate dinner, gathering of friends or even larger dinner event. Gloria Ferrers 2008 Brut Ros is the ideal sparkling wine for all of these. This gorgeous, almost copper-colored ros is full-bodied and rich in raspberry and strawberry flavors. The aromas and flavors of this wine are strongly influenced by the dominance of Pinot Noir in the blend, while a small amount of Chardonnay contributes structure and an extended finish. This is a winery exclusive and while you are visiting Gloria Ferrer, be sure to check out all their gourmet food gifts which pair perfectly with a bottle of their wines. Estate olive oil and boxes of chocolates line the shelves but the Blanc de Noirs wine filled truffles are absolutely divine! Gloria Ferrer will also host another fun-filled Valentines Day event so be sure to visit their website for details and ticket information at www.gloriaferrer.com. Established more than 25 years ago, Gloria Ferrer was the first sparkling wine house built in Carneros, but its history goes back much further. Take any one of their expertly guided tours to learn more about their winegrowing history, the Carneros appellation, time-

honored tradition and centuries-old winemaking practices. Explore the process by which the mthode champenoise sparkling wines are made or choose one of their private tours, including a food and wine pairing option. Taste four different wines expertly paired with delicious seasonal bites while learning the basics of wine and food pairings. Afterward, stroll out onto the terrace to enjoy views of their lush estate vineyards and olive trees. Several bubbly flights are available and while they are recognized for their sparkling wine, they also produce estate varietal wines. Their estate wine flights offer guests a chance to taste truly distinctive wines made exclusively from the Carneros region. Select a wine flight, glass or bottle of your favorite wine and take in the sweeping views of the valley! The Celebrity Chef Tour Dinner is another major event that is coming to Gloria Ferrer on Saturday, April 5th. Savor and celebrate spring as you feast on a delicious five-course dinner created by these fabulous visiting and local chefs: Stephanie Izard of Girl and the Goat, Little Goat, Chicago IL a 2013 James Beard Award Winner and Top Chef Season 4 Winner; Katherine Humphus of Bobeau kitchen + bar, San Diego CA; Mark Richardson of the Four Seasons Hotel, San Francisco CA; Moaya Scheiman & Andrea Koweek of Crisp, Sonoma CA; Andrew Wilson of Carneros Bistro Wine Bar, Sonoma CA; Carlo Cavallo of Meritage Martini Oyster Bar & Grille, Sonoma CA. FRIDAY, JANUARY 17 New this year: Scientific Grower Truffle Cultivation Seminar
Truffle orchards are highly profitable, and are an excellent and viable way to diversify land usage. The demand for European black truffles, the most sought after truffles in the world (aka the diamond of the kitchen), far exceeds supply. Current black truffle production is almost exclusively in Europe, but now these truffles can be cultivated in select areas around the world. North America, especially regions like Napa and Sonoma, offer particularly suitable climates/soil. Designed for potential truffle growers, this in-depth seminar provides a detailed technical overview of the science and methodology involved in truffle cultivation. Presented by American Truffle Companys Chief Scientist Dr. Paul Thomas and Managing Director Robert Chang, you will learn about the myriad of scientific factors one must consider to successfully grow truffles.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 18 All About Truffles For the curious and the hungry, and anyone who loves truffles (the fungi kind)
Come learn all about truffles the cuisine, the sex and the science! In this exciting, comprehensive primer about all things truffle, you will get tips on cooking with truffles from our Michelin star host chef Ken Frank who will discuss how to handle fresh truffles in the kitchen, as well as common myths and misconceptions about the various truffle species and products. Youll also get a glimpse into the science of truffles (including sex and truffles!) with worldrenowned truffle scientist Dr. Paul Thomas and truffle expert Robert Chang; plus why science plays a key role in how truffles are grown and harvested.

Festival-goers will rise and shine for an early morning wild mushroom forage led by renowned mycophagist David Campbell: Well see what we find and find what we see! With a little luck, perhaps well find Porcini, Hedgehogs, Chanterelles or Candy Caps accompanied by Dr. Paul Thomas and local mycologist Stephanie Jarvis.

same appellation. With cross-regional competition removed, the inherent quality of wines can be seen without the influences that sometimes eclipse even a wine of very high quality. Wines are judged in the context of their viticultural region in order to accomplish two things: to recognize the complexities and nuances of regional wines, and also to measure the influence of regional soil and weather characteristics on the taste and quality of individual wines. During judging, wines were grouped by AVA and varietal. Judges were told what regions the wines were from while they tasted. According to GHA spokesperson, Christopher Sawyer, On behalf of the 25 wine judges who participated at this years event, we are thrilled that the impact of the awards handed out at the Grand Harvest Awards 2013 will build momentum for the vineyard owners growing the grapes, the winemakers who craft the wines, the sommeliers and wine buyers who follow the results of the competition and, ultimately, the consumers who get to enjoy the aromas and flavors of the finished wines produced in the famous regions of America and around the globe. See vwmmedia.com for more information on Grand Harvest Awards. Tedeschi Family Winery is at 2779 Grant Street in Calistoga. For more information, visit www.TedeschiFamilyWinery.com. Perfect Pairs
The best way to finish any meal is with dessert and Executive Chef and owner Greg Cole has provided a decadent chocolate after dinner treat that is perfect any time of the year. This dish is often served as a special at Coles Chop House and is incredibly rich making it the perfect dessert for chocolate lovers. Its easy to make and can be made in advance which saves time in the kitchen. The wine pairing suggestions for this dish are two Zinfandels from Storybook Mountain Vineyards: 2010 Napa Estate Reserve Zinfandel and the Executive Chef and Owner Greg Cole 2010 Napa Estate Mayacamas Range Zinfandel. Weve offered Jerry Seps wines for many years. No matter the party size, weve got a Storybook Zinfandel to pair with this dessert. Jerry is one of the nicest guys I know and his Zinfandels are among my favorites, says Chef Greg Cole. The bittersweet chocolate pat is the ideal complement to the spice notes found in both Zinfandels and highlight the silky richness of the chocolate. The Estate Reserve Zinfandels pure berry and dark cherry aromas entice you into this wine while the oak notes and varietal spice and pepper add complexity. The Mayacamas Range Zinfandel is a peppery Zin and possesses all the richness and fruit plus the depth and structure of a well-balanced wine. Storybook Mountain has established a world-wide reputation for the consistently high quality of its wines. Their sought after estate wines are carefully hand-crafted from choice grapes grown in certified organic estate vineyards surrounding the winery. Proprietors Jerry and Sigrid Seps wines are famed for intensity and longevity. Raspberries, black cherries and spice are the essence of their complex, well balanced and elegant wines. Greg Cole also owns Celadon, another long-time downtown Napa favorite. Coles is a classic American steak house offering 21-day dry-aged Prime beef along with fresh seafood and Berkshire pork. Celadon features a seasonally influenced menu focusing on the flavors of the Mediterranean, Asia and America. Both restaurants are Michelin Guide recommended and are a favorite among locals and visitors for their excellent hospitality, exclusive wines and bourbons and of course their delicious food that is always spot on. These restaurants are always busy during dinner service so reservations are recommended and can be made online at www.celadonnapa.com or www.coleschophouse.com.

The grapes for the new Ca Momi reserve wines were hand-selected from several premium vineyards across the Napa Valley, including the two vineyards Ca Momi recently purchased in the Napa Carneros. These first Reserve releases are a landmark for us, says De Conti. They are not only our first reserve wines; they also capture what we hope will be the future of Ca Momi reserves: great wines made from the fruit of our own vineyards. The wines are labeled with a boldly iconic

ROMBAUER VINEYARDS
Great Napa Valley Wines Decade after Decade
BY JOSH STEIN
ROMBAUER VINEYARDS Wine tasting daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m 3522 Silverado Trail North, St. Helena CA 94574 1-800-622-2206 | www.rombauer.com
Rombauer Vineyards is one of those wineries: everyone has known for more than three decades that if it says Rombauer on a bottle, you can be guaranteed a high quality, soulful wine to go with food, bringing enjoyment to all who partake. The Rombauer philosophy is called the Joy of Wine-crafting releases meant to pair with meals, echoing Great Aunt Irma Rombauers belief that the joy of life is the pursuit of what is best to taste and enjoy. Now at year thirty-four and known for decades as a Napa Valley must visit, its clear to see and taste that they have found a winning formula. How? By keeping the emphasis on what matters: drinkable wines and an enjoyable experience the food and the people matter most, not the attitude! The proof is the gold and doublegold medals and high scores their releases have all earned, not to mention their status as one of Wine & Spirits Magazines top restaurant wine selections in their annual poll. The winery itself is on the north-east Silverado Trail, giving a fun drive and showing off glorious views and uncrowded experiences on the road less travelled. The hilltop winery and tasting room, looking out over the heritage Zinfandel vineyard visitors drive through along the way, are built over more than a miles worth of caves dug into the hillside. Picnic tables and a trellised gazebo let you know from the outset what matters most: relaxed enjoyment. Tastings are available daily at three separate tasting bars in the tasting room, as is the self-guided garden stroll through the more than one hundred plant and flower species, and the views of the Mayacamas are photo-worthy, for sure. A flight of classic releases await. The wines are just as much a standout as the views, and fitting in with their ethos, the Rombauers really have thought through the logistics of pairing wine and food, not just in terms of varietals but also in offering multiple bottle sizes, ranging from 375 milliliter half-bottles, to the standard 750 milliliter bottle we all know so well, to 1.5-liter magnums and even larger formats for occasions requiring something extra special. What awaits are several different Chardonnays, Merlots, Zinfandels and a range of Cabernets and Cab-based bottlings, including the best of vintage red blend, Le Meilleur du Chai. There are also two terrific sweets, a Zinfandel port and the Late Harvest Chardonnay known simply and unsurprisingly as Joy. Koerner Rombauer III, the next generation, has stepped into maintaining the winerys way of doing things with aplomb. Lots of wineryonly releases await, and visitors in search of the real Napa experience need look no further. Unlike a lot of other places throughout the Valley, many of which simply dont yet have enough vintages under their belt, the winery has managed to find a balance between a distinguished past and new, exciting bottlings. The result is a Napa Valley standard-bearer which is quite consistent in making great wines. Theres a reason the name Rombauer brings such great associations and why theyre still winning so many golds after three decades; come taste for yourself and find out why youll be glad you did. Enjoy!

DELORIMIER WINERY
BY DAWN MARIE CARLSON
Open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. 2001 California 128, Geyserville, CA 95441 (707) 857-2000 | www.delorimierwinery.com
DeLorimier is the winery to visit when in Sonoma County with a fabulous line of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Primitivo and their signature, Mosaic Meritage. Savor their artisan wines in the lovely tasting room surrounded by vineyards with spectacular Alexander Valley views. Enjoy the rotating art exhibitions on display from local artists in the gallery, which adds another layer to the wine tasting experience here. Fun and education is the basis of all wine enjoyment at deLorimier. Alexander Valley, known as Californias Bordeaux, is a genuine mosaic of soil types and microclimate due to the local landscape. Some of the finest grapes in the world are grown here making this a winemakers dream location for producing world-class wines. When Ken and Diane Wilson discovered this property, they knew at once that this would be their new Cabernet Sauvignon showcase. It is their intent to produce wines known more for the character of the estate rather than the varietal content. Alexander Valley is becoming the most sought out fruit in all of California and deLorimier Winery represents a diverse collection of varietals illustrating this. Private tours for six to twelve guests ($25 plus tax) is the best way to experience the best deLorimier has to offer, featuring a property and production tour ending in a barrel tasting in the cellar room. Wine tasting follows with a cheese and chocolate pairing in the tasting room. Perhaps you might want to enjoy your picnic lunch on the back patio and relax near the vineyards. VIP tours ($125) are also available, which include a four-hour luxury limousine tour visiting four Wilson Artisan Wineries with their private wine educator for six to twelve guests. If you are looking for a great place to host a special event of any type, corporate event, weddings or private dinners, the estate vineyard is your perfect destination. In addition, the Wilson Artisan Wineries guesthouses are available for

accommodations amongst the vineyards for the full wine country experience. Please contact the winery for fees and reservations. Al deLorimier founded deLorimier Winery in 1986 and precisely planned the winery and vineyards and developed it into the estate it is today. Ken and Diane Wilson acquired the property in 2008. The production facility is set up for blending and aging many small lots of wine. With their focus on single vineyard designate Cabernets, winemakers Diane Wilson and Antoine Favero combined their talents to produce award-winning artisan wines.
Award-Winning Wines
At the 2013 Sonoma County Harvest Fair, the 2011 Reserve Chardonnay Stuhlmuler Vineyard won a Double Gold Medal; and Gold Medals awarded for the 2010 Mosaic Meritage, the 2010 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Preston Ranch, the 2011 Zinfandel
Harris Kratka Vineyard and the 2011 Zinfandel Alexander Valley. The deLorimier Winery features specials on their wines, including case specials on the Sonoma County Chardonnay and Merlot. In addition, wine club members have access to vineyard lodging, limited release wines and receive incredible discounts at each of the sister wineries.
