Hi Nandan, The burden of a class P protection CT can be checked by a combination of measurement & calculation and than a con

The measurement is 1) taking the magnetising curve and search for the knee-point where increase of 10% voltage gives an increase of 50% 2) measuring the DC secondary winding resistance Rdc at a given ambient temperature.

The calculation is the following: 1) first convert the DC winding resistance at ambient temp to a standardised temp of 75C by using the temp coefficien 2) calculate ALF and Rb values Vkp = ALFx Ins x (Rct+Rb)

Ins is the rated secondary CT current usually 5A or 1A. either you know the ALF value and you can now calculate the Rb value or you can find cominations of ALF values that Remember that Rct is the secondary winding resistance at 75C and Rb is the external connected burden or short the c 3) since P=RbxIns you directly find the burden in VA by multiplying the Ohm value by the square of the rated secondar

Last step is the accuracy check; the magnetising current Imag at the knee point should be less than 1% for a 5P and 3%

For a measuring CT, the same can be done but the difficulty is that the position of the knee point is not given. I estimate

measurement & calculation and than a conformity check.

ase of 10% voltage gives an increase of 50% magnetising current. Note the knee-point voltage Vkp and the corresponding magnetising current Imag@V

d temp of 75C by using the temp coefficient given in IEC 60076-2: (T2+235)/R2=(T1+235)/R1 where T1 is the amb temp, T2 = 75, R1 is the measured

you can find cominations of ALF values that can be reached by this CT with a corresponding burden resistance Rb. the external connected burden or short the connected burden. Indeed, Rb has a value in Ohm and you need to make the third calculation to convert th m value by the square of the rated secondary current.

point should be less than 1% for a 5P and 3% for a 10P CT

ition of the knee point is not given. I estimate the knee point between 3 and 6 times the rated current since the highest precision (very low magnetising

eed to make the third calculation to convert the Rb Ohm value to a power VA value

e the highest precision (very low magnetising current) must be reaced at 120% of the rated current so the knee point defenitely lies above 120%. Here
