Using The Great War

Smoke Barrages are not available to Italian HQ. Chauchats are of very limited availability: they may NOT be taken by Company Command Groups, and only every second infantry platoon may take a single Chauchat. 22nd Division should be represented minimally by one Angriffbataillon of four core companies but may consist of two Angriffbataillon. 3rd Edelwei and the Jager Division should be represented minimally by one Angriffbataillon, but may consist of two: one of four core companies and another of two.

Austrians did not have a widely used light machine gun. Only the Battalion or Companies representing the Jager Division have access to light machine guns or rifle grenade launchers.

Austrian Organization:

Each KuK regular Austrian infantry division had an assault battalion theoretically comprised of four infantry companies, a machine-gun company with 8 heavy machine guns, and field gun, light mortar, flamethrower and engineer platoons. Both regular infantry and assault battalions were made up of command section and three foot companies, each company of four platoons. Platoons were led by a lieutenant with one or two sergeants, each leading half the platoon. Each of four roughly ten-man squads was led by a corporal. Platoons were organized according to Italian Organization:

the available weapons and preference of the commander, but very simply, each infantryman would carry a rifle and grenades. Heavy machine guns could be allocated from the battalion machine gun company and were of the Swarzlose or Skoda 8mm types. There were no platoon or company level light machine guns available. National Characteristics Austrian assault battalions and the German Jagers may have a StormAbteilung Vor! Card and a Rally Card added to the deck. Heroic Leader may be added by any unit and all stormtrooper formations should have Dynamic Leader card. Platoons were led by a lieutenant and a sergeant, with four squads of roughly ten men led by a corporal. Italian platoons were less specialized than other nationalities, with each trooper a rifleman/grenadier; only one squad should be equipped as bombers. Two Chauchats were available per company only every second platoon may have one. National Characteristics Italians should have the Hesitant Troops card added to the deck.

Troop Quality

Rate the 22nd, 3rd Edelwei and Jagers as Veterans with Good morale. Big men from Corporal up will be of high quality, and well supplied in Stormtrooper units. Force Limitations The Austrian and German reliance on the hand-grenade as a weapon of attack means that Central Powers bomber sections operating as part of an attacking force may only operate as riflemen if they are short of or have exhausted their supplies of grenades. Assault troops of the 22nd Division, all troops of Edelwei, and all Jagers should always be considered aggressive.

Each Italian infantry division was comprised of four regiments on paper, each containing three battalions of about 750 men by 1917. A battalion was formed of three rifle companies (each with two machine guns) and a machine gun company with eight guns (commonly 6.5mm FiatRevelli or 8mm French St. Etienne and Hotchkiss), a mortar platoon with four 3 Stokes weapons, and a pioneer platoon.

Troop Quality

Rate the 50th and 43rd Division troops as of Veteran quality. Morale should be Poor. Force Limitations The Chauchat Automatic Rifle will suffer a stoppage when the number of 1s rolled is equal to or greater than the number of 6s rolled.
