GUIDE TO BEGINNER LEVEL COURSE

Course Structure
This course seeks to lay the foundation for developing basic communicative competency in Japanese.
Each lesson starts with listening and pronunciation practice then moves into a dialogue. The dialogue is
translated into English for comprehension check, followed by which expressions and grammar points are
explained. Vocabulary used in the dialogues and in the exercises are pre-introduced. Shadowing practice
and an exercise that allows you to practice in the real world what you have covered in the lesson are also
included. Each text comes with a CD as well. Listen to the CD as many times as you can to familiarise
yourself with natural Japanese.

2013-2014 JET PROGRAMME JAPANESE LANGUAGE COURSE GUIDE

GUIDE TO INTERMEDIATE LEVEL COURSE

Course Objective
This course is aimed at those students who have completed the JET Programme Beginners Level
Japanese Course, or who have otherwise attained a similar level of competence in Japanese. The course
objectives are to help you to acquire the skills required for the basic daily conversation that you are likely
to need as a JET Programme participant, to distinguish between voiced and voiceless sounds, to gain
fluency in intonation, including the use of double consonants and the nasal sound, and to develop your
ability to handle greetings, as well as common customs and cultural patterns that build on what was
covered in at the beginners level. You should acquire 300 kanji and 2,000 basic words above those
introduced in the Beginners Level Course.

Course Criteria and Required Knowledge

The basic criterion is that you have mastered the Focus Items introduced in the JET Program Beginners
Level Textbooks, including the hiragana and katakana syllabaries, the approximately 100 kanji, and the 800
words covered (or a similar level of Japanese). This course is designed to begin with that knowledge as a
starting point. Please refer to the Beginners Level syllabus.
