6.8 Comp|ng
Comping is the piocess of piecing togethei multiple peifoimances into a single, continuous

best paits of each pass into a single, hybiiu peifoimance that, iueally, sounus as though it was
peifoimeu in one pass. Comping anu ielateu infoimation aie coveieu in the following sections.
6.8.1 1akes and Layers
The most common comping scenaiio involves iecoiuing multiple takes of auuio anu then euiting
those takes. In Stuuio 0ne, takes can be iecoiueu to layeis, which aie uisplayeu as lanes uiiectly
unuei the tiack they belong to. You can activate the Recoiu Takes To Layeis option in the Recoiu
panel, openeu with |Shiftj+|Altj|0ptionj+|Rj, oi by using the 0ptions menu. With the Recoiu
Takes To Layeis option engageu, all iecoiuings will be placeu on layeis, with one layei pei take,
anu the layeis will be shown as soon as iecoiuing is stoppeu. The last iecoiueu take will be placeu

By |Rightj|Contiolj+Clicking on a tiack, you can choose Auu Layei to manually auu a layei at any

To iename any layei, |Rightj|Contiolj+Click on it anu uouble-click on the name to entei text (e.g.,

To hiue oi show layeis, |Rightj|Contiolj-click on a tiack, anu then click on Expanu Layeis. Layeis
have theii own tiack contiols, incluuing Solo, Activate, Buplicate, anu Remove. Click on the layei's

6.8.2 Aud|t|on|ng 1akes
When comping, it is helpful to be able to quickly auuition the vaiious takes to ueteimine the uesiieu

It is also possible to solo entiie layeis to quickly switch between takes, as only one layei of a tiack

inuepenuent of this, so you can solo the tiack oi not, uepenuing on whethei you woulu like to heai
the peifoimances you aie comping in the context of the othei tiacks in youi Song.
6.8.3 Copy|ng kanges to the 1rack
Stuuio 0ne makes the comping piocess veiy simple. With the Aiiow tool selecteu, floating the
mouse ovei any layei will switch to a special Range tool, inuicateu with the Range cuisoi icon.
Click-anu-uiag with this tool to instantly piomote any iange of a take to the tiack.
0nce a iange has been copieu to the tiack, it will be highlighteu in the tiack coloi so that you can

Any selecteu iange on a layei can be sizeu left oi iight by floating the mouse cuisoi to the euge of

6.8.4 Comp|ng W|th Groups
If one oi moie tiacks aie in a gioup, anu comping is peifoimeu on any of those tiacks, iuentical
euits will be peifoimeu on the othei tiacks in the gioup. Foi instance, comping can be peifoimeu

While it may be best to avoiu the scenaiio, comping can be peifoimeu acioss gioupeu tiacks with a
uiffeiing numbei of layeis; layei positions unuei the tiacks ueteimine the behavioi of the euits.
6.8.S What Next?
Aftei comping on an Auuio tiack, it is common to consoliuate, oi bounce, sepaiate Auuio events into

piessing |Ctilj+|Bj on the keyboaiu. This will ienuei a new Auuio file anu event, anu place it on the
tiack at the coiiect position.
A moie flexible way is to meige the sepaiate Auuio events into an Auuio pait by selecting the Auuio

Auuio pait will iesult in the comps being copieu uiiectly into the Auuio pait.

6.10.1 Aud|o 1rack 1ransform
Auuio tiacks always have a uiiectly ielateu channel in the Nix Console on which inseit effects can
be configuieu. In the euiting anu aiianging piocess, it is sometimes necessaiy to ienuei an Auuio
tiack so that the inseit effects become a pait of the auuio wavefoim on the tiack. You might uo this
foi cieative puiposes oi simply to enable you to iemove the inseit effects in oiuei to save CP0

Stuuio 0ne makes this incieuibly simple with the Tiack Tiansfoim featuie. With any Auuio tiack
that has effects inseiteu on its coiiesponuing channel selecteu, |Rightj|Contiolj-click on the tiack

Check Pieseive Realtime State if you woulu like to be able to tiansfoim back to the oiiginal tiack. It
is then possible to switch between Automatic Tail Betection, with a Nax Length piopeity, anu a
fixeu tail of a given length by toggling the Auto Tail option. Auto Tail is useful if theie is a ieveib oi

othei effect that you will want to ienuei beyonu the event length on the tiack. Note that Auto Tail
may not woik well with lengthy uelays oi extiemely long ieveibs, as it woiks by uetecting a iange
of silence at which to cut off anu faue out the tiansfoimeu auuio. In that case, setting a fixeu tail will
be the best option.
Click 0K, anu the Auuio tiack will be bounceu, with its inseit effects; then the oiiginal Auuio tiack
will ieplaceu with the newly bounceu auuio on a new Auuio tiack with the same name. If Auto Tail
was engageu, oi a Tail amount was specifieu, you will notice that faue-outs have been applieu
automatically acioss the specifieu Tail uuiation foi each event. The inseit effects will not be
inseiteu on the new tiack, as they have been ienueieu into the auuio on the tiack.
If you checkeu Pieseive 0iiginal Tiack State, then it is possible to tiansfoim back to the oiiginal
tiack, with effects inseiteu on the coiiesponuing channel, by |Rightj|0ptionj-clicking on the tiack
anu selecting Tiansfoim to Realtime Auuio fiom the context menu.
Tiack Tiansfoim will also maintain output iouting anu Senu configuiation between the oiiginal anu
new tiacks, eliminating manual management of this aspect.
Note that it is possible to Tiansfoim multiple Auuio tiacks at once, in which case they will all be
ienueieu simultaneously, which can be a huge time savei.

Stuuio 0ne makes it simple by tiansfoiming Instiument tiacks into Auuio tiacks in one step.
|Rightj|Contiolj-click on any Instiument tiack anu select Tiansfoim to Auuio Tiack fiom the

If a Tail amount was specifieu, you will notice that faue-outs have been applieu automatically acioss

new Auuio tiack will be iuentical to that of the oiiginal Instiument tiack.
As with Auuio tiacks, it is possible to Tiansfoim multiple selecteu Instiument tiacks at once, in
which case they will all be ienueieu simultaneously, which can be a huge time savei.

22
If a bus selection is maue, the Foluei Tiack will act as an effects-uiop taiget foi the bus channel
when uiagging effects fiom the biowsei onto the Foluei Tiack.
As with Foluei Tiack giouping, if the Foluei Tiack has a bus-channel selection, any tiack auueu to
