Maritime Prole Fenders

Maritime Internationals prole fenders include Cylindrical, Wing, D-Shape, Square, and many others. The inherent simplicity of the installation and operation of these fenders makes them an economical solution for docks that are required to cope with a variety of vessels. Maritime provides a standard range of sizes for each prole, but is able to manufacture to suit specic needs. All prole fenders can be mounted in a variety of methods and Maritime can provide you with a conguration to suit your needs.

For dimension and performance data on our selection of prole fenders, see page 42

The quality of a vessel fender is nearly impossible to judge based on visual inspection. A low quality fender will generally appear the same as a high quality fender. The rubber compounds used in the manufacturing process play an essential role in energy absorption, and the fenders useful life. The only way to ensure the best quality fenders are being used is through rigorous performance testing. Maritime Internationals on-site test lab includes the largest high velocity fender test frame in the world which provides discriminating clients with a certied demonstration of our product performance. Our state-ofthe art laboratory provides clients with peace of mind when purchasing marine fenders from Maritime.

Comparison of Manufacturing Processes

Extruding Mandrel Wrapping Molding

Virtually unlimited availability of prole shapes

Limited to cylindrical shapes with an inside diameter

Virtually unlimited availability of prole shapes and sizes Better control of dimensional tolerances Excellent control of rubber properties

Pros

Fenders of any practical length can be Capable of producing cylindrical produced fenders of over 2 meters in diameter Very high production rates Larger dimensional tolerances required Maximum cross sectional prole limited by equipment Limited to rubber compounds that are extrudable Surface nish can be dicult to control Good control of rubber properties

Very good surface nish

Surface nish of cylindrical fenders aected by wrapping tape Fender length limited by available wrapping equipment Production rate limited by available tooling and cure times

Requires a mold to be built for each size Can be expensive for limited production of custom sizes and shapes Production rate limited by available tooling and cure times

Cons

Economical Shipping
-Ordering length under 20 guarantee easier handling and proper t for a 20 foot container. -The use of a stabbing guide is recommended for loading and unloading of a container. (A stabbing guide is just a simple pipe attached to a forklift attachment that allows you to stab the fenders inside their ID in order to pull the fenders out of the container.

Cutting and Drilling

It is important to always properly brace all rubber bodies being cut or drilled. Frictional loads between the drill or saw and the rubber body are relatively high and must be properly resisted. Cutting Preferred Method: Band Saw Blade Pitch: ~1 (25mm) per Tooth Cutting Speed: Slow to Medium Cutting Pressure: Low to Medium Drilling Bit Type: Solid Center Auger or Self-Feed Center Bits Drill Speed: 75-250 RPM Drill Bit Size: 1/8 (3mm) Larger Diameter than anticipated hole size. Feed Rate: Slow (Best not to advance more than 2 (50mm) before backing out bit and cleaning excess rubber from hole) If holes must be drill entering or exiting the rubber surface at an angle other than 90degress to the surface extreme caution must be used. Extremely slow feed speeds must be used to guarantee a straight hole. When drilling through the bore of a prole fender it is best to drill one side of the fender then ip and drill the opposite side. For holes requiring a counter bore. It is best to drill counter bore rst then drill though hole.

Curved Fenders
When linear type fenders are bent for installation on curved vessel faces, the outside of the fender expands and the inside is compressed. Rubber shows very strong cut resistance even against sharp edges and good weather resistance under normal or compressed conditions. However, when rubber is stretched the cut resistance and weather resistance are signicantly lowered. The rubber becomes subject to damage from sharp edges and ozone. Therefore, it is safer to avoid installing a linear type fender to a vessel where it will be forcibly bent. The stretching ratio of the outside of a linear fender installed by bending is dependent upon the outside diameter or height of the fender and the radius on the position of the vessel where the fender is installed. On the basis of experience and the test results, if the radius is larger than four times the outside diameter or height of the fender it has been observed that there is no reason to exclude the installation of a linear type fender on a curved vessel face.
