THE FIRST WORD

// UPDATE
Heres an idea: I think it might be a good time for Sam to reappear throughout the community. So many here learned to Love Like Sam. (For those who are new, Sam is the Good Samaritan.) Why not look for a place where you could dump a little love on some unsuspecting person this week? Buy a meal, clean up a mess, visit a shut-in, stop to help, bake some cookiesfind some way to love on people. Lets create a wave of kindness. Come in and tell me what you did. Sam stories are my very favorites! New Years makes a great time to start fresh! Maybe its a Bible reading program; maybe its a table group on Wednesday nights. It could be a string of weekends where worship was the most important piece or getting involved in a new area of service. Heres what I want for you: I want you to intentionally place yourself in a position where God will s-tr-e-t-c-h your trust in Him. Go out of your comfort zone for God. It will surprise you; I promise. See you this weekend as we begin to look at Faith Bumpsthose places our God story gets hung up.

Welcome Tyler Sansom! As you read this, Tyler is unpacking his things as he begins his ministry with First Capital! As most of you know, Tyler is our new Worship Minister. Tyler grew up near Huntington, West Virginia, before becoming a student at Kentucky Christian University. Tyler and his familya dog named Rudy and a pet pig named Magnum P.I.G.!will be moving in this week. Over the last several weeks, Tyler and I have been texting and talking about all the plans he has for our worship experiences. One of the places he wants to go is to create an evening worship experienceabout once a quarterwhere we can gather and just lose ourselves in worship. The first of those will be January 26 at 7pm. I so appreciate the efforts of all those who have served in our worship ministry, but especially those who have stepped up to organize and hold the teams together while we have searched for a new leader. We have so many great volunteers in so many areas! I can never name them all, but your efforts are what keep this ship afloat. Childrens Ministry, Student Ministry, Building Maintenance, Office Support, Life Group Leaders, Outreach, Greeters, Serversthe list goes on. Those who serve so regularly make my list of Superheroes!

Happy 2014 everyone! I have to let you know; this is a year that Ive been looking forward to for quite some time! By years end, our family will have celebrated my and Amys 25th wedding anniversary, my parents 50th anniversary, a high school and a college graduation, and, oh yeah we will add a daughter-in-law to the family this spring! So many good things on the horizon! I hope you feel the same way about the 2014 horizon here at First Capital so many good things to look forward to! Whether it is fellowship opportunities, missions opportunities, or chances to minister in our local community, we have a wide open range of possibilities to let our lights shine for Jesus! Let me quickly update you on a few things that have started or are in the works: Mens and Womens Studies The response and excitement for the studies we offered at the end of last year exceeded my expectations! It tells me that we have people who are itching to be equipped so we can go apply what Gods will is in our lives! We offered the Craig Groeschel FIGHT series at (5) different venues this November and December. I continue to get tremendous feedback from guys who made the time and money investment. I am working on a plan to offer make-up sessions for those who missed one or more of the sessions. In addition we will definitely be offering FIGHT again for those who didnt get a chance to take

the study the first time around. We have also had an incredible response to Diana Jones study on the book Having a Mary Spirit. This study continues for a couple more weeks. We will keep you posted on future womens weekend study offerings in 2014. Monday Morning Mens Group Id love to invite any guy who wants to seek wisdom in 2014 to join us on Monday mornings (6 to 7 AM) at Cracker Barrel in Corydon. We will be starting a study on the book of Proverbs. Well be discovering timeless Godly directives on how to make wise, everyday decisions. Wednesday Night Table Groups Our Wednesday night Table Groups get back into action on Wednesday, December 8. This is an INCREDIBLE opportunity for singles OR married couples to develop some relationships at First Capital and discuss some application to the weekend lessons. If one of your goals for the new year is to be more involved at church I can tell you that this is probably one of your best opportunities. We have been having a lot of fun and theres always room for one more. We go from 6:30 to 8:00 every Wednesday. Childrens programming for all ages is available. A joyous, and prosperous 2014 as we begin the road together! My prayer is that you find yourself closer to our Lord by years end!

DADDY DAUGHTER DATE NIGHT 2/07 / 6:30Pm

A prom-like event for fathers and their daughters

Hello to all the world. Ok, maybe not all the world, maybe not all of Harrison County, and maybe not all of Corydon. It is so great to be able to write this article and share what God is doing in the months of January and February here at First Capital. I pray that all finds you well at this time and that Christmas was amazing. I know that I totally look forward to another year of dreams. The International Olympic Committee recently released their updated Olympic Charter in preparation for this years Winter Olympics. In its PDF form, the Charter is 105 pages long and lists the rules and bylaws governing the entirety of the Olympic organization. It does not list the rules for individual events, but refers readers to their individual documents that they have listed. So, an athlete participating in the Olympics has a lot of rules to learn as they train to do their best. In Upstreet for January we will be discussing how knowledge is discovering something new so you can be better at whatever you do. We believe that Gods Word is the best place to discover something new about our world and ultimately ourselves. When we put those discoveries into practice, it changes us from the inside out and it impacts the choices we make and the way we live.

God is the source of all truth. We need to dig into His Word and discover that truth for ourselves. The knowledge we can glean from the 66 books of the Bible tells us how to live our lives day in and day out, but that knowledge is not an end in and of itself. We can know all there is to know about God, but if we dont put any of our knowledge into practice, it is worthless. The monthly memory verse is: God has breathed life into all of Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right, 2 Timothy 3:16, NIrV. Gods Word is powerful and strong. When we discover it and put it into practice, we have its strength on our side every day of our lives. In February, we will be discussing how faith is believing in what you cant see because of what you can see. Sometimes we lose sight of what Gods doing in our lives, but we can see all of the many other ways God reveals Himself. Through the things we can see, we can believe that what the Bible says about God is true. When we recognize God at work around us, we respond to Him with trust. We have confidence He has a plan for our lives, and we are willing to take risks to see that plan accomplished. Even in our moments of

// NOTE CONT. & MINISTRY NEEDS CHILDRENS MINISTRY

doubt, God will show us something to remind us to have faith. The monthly memory verse is: Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being certain of what we do not see, Hebrews 11:1, NIrV. We might not clearly see and understand everything about a relationship with God. We can ask questions and read our Bibles to learn more, but faith is believing that what God says is true, that we will live with Him forever, even when we cant see every detail about how it happens. In Sprouts, the month of January brings some of my favorite stories to tell preschoolers. Theyre stories filled with awe and wonder. Theyre the stories that make us say, Hmm, Jesus really can do anything! Filling empty nets with fish, feeding five thousand with just a few fishes and loaves. Wow, Its amazing what Jesus did. He walked on the water. He calmed a storm with just a word. God sent His Son to us and He did some truly miraculous things before He did the most amazing thing of all: dying to save us. We will enjoy sharing these stories with your preschoolers this month. [Laugh during the water play.] During the month of February, we will discuss how Jesus loves everyone. Everyone! He loves you. He loves me. He even loves that lady down the street who never comes outside. He loves the man at the grocery store. He loves the lady at the deli. Jesus loves everyone! We want our preschoolers to know that simple truth. Jesus loves them and everyone around them. We will hear stories of how Jesus loved during His time on earth; how He loved the woman at the well and loved the scorned woman even though no one else did; how He loves us even when we do something wrong like He loved Zacchaeus. Our preschoolers will also hear about how everyone needs Jesus and that we should tell others about Him. Each weeks lesson will come back to one simple truth: Jesus loves everyone. Imagine how we would all act if we remembered that Jesus loves each and every one of us. We hope our preschoolers will walk away with that truth tucked in their heart. We have some exciting activities coming up as well. On January 31st, we will be conducting our annual elementary lock-in. I know, some people still ask me why, but lets face it, they are amazing kids. Make sure you invite all the kids you know to come to this amazing event. On February 7th, we will be conducting our Daddy Daughter Date night. Remember it is for all ages and it benefits those going on mission trips. So come out and have a ball, get it, Ball with your favorite girl, no matter what the age.

MISSIONS & OUTREACH

First off, thank you to all the volunteers who have assisted in outreach events in 2013. We had another very successful Joy Prom, as well as Outdoor Expo, Fall Down on the Square, and a new event with Fun in the Son at the local pool. We recently completed a Womens Christmas Tea that had nearly 150 guests, who listened to a wonderful speaker, Lynn Benson. Unfortunately, while preparing this article, I had to make the decision to cancel the Live Nativity on the Square due to pending weather (a challenge we also faced with Fall Down on the Square).

Our upcoming events are Kill It and Grill It on Thursday, January 30th, featuring James Hampton of Huntin the Truth Ministries, which will be followed by Joy Prom in the spring. As always, I welcome suggestions for additional outreach events that we could look to do because I know there are many opportunities that I may not be aware of. Have a Happy New Year! Bill Hollingsworth

Happy New Year and I hope everyone had a very wonderful Christmas! The first Community Gathering of the year will be here at First Capital on Friday, January 3rd at 7:25 pm. The next Gathering will be Friday, February 7th at Edwardsville United Methodist Church at 7:25 pm. The Spring walks will again be at Indian Creek Baptist Camp in Mauckport: Mens Walk will be April 3-6; the Lay Director is George Browning; Womens Walk April 10-13; the Lay Director is Sharon Rosenbarger. There will be a sponsorship training here at First Capital in the next few weeks. To make it convenient for as many people as possible, we plan to do it immediately following service one Sunday.

As a reminder, from now on, if you plan to sponsor a pilgrim, you must attend this one-time training. There is a new, revised pilgrim application on the website, which has an updated sponsor covenant, pilgrim information page, and reflects the fee increase. Please use this application form this point forward (if you send in an old one, it will be returned and you will need to complete the new one.) I know there have been a lot of changes lately and change isnt always comfortable. Please understand that all of these decisions have been covered in prayer and everything has been done with the best interest of the pilgrims in mind.
