Safety Requirements

1. When filling the fuel tank, do not smoke or use open flame in the area. Always make metal-to-metal contact between the container and the fuel tank. This will prevent a spark as fuel flows over metallic surfaces. Failure to observe this warning may result in death to personnel. 2. Never operate the centrifugal pump in an enclosed area unless the exhaust gases are piped to the outside. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide which is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas. 3. Make sure spark plug leads are disconnected before performing maintenance on the pump. 4. Avoid breathing smoke when using a fire extinguisher. 5. Do not fill the fuel tank while the engine is running. Gasoline spilled on a hot engine may explode and cause serious injury to personnel. 6. Do not attempt to perform any maintenance on the pump while the engine is running. 7. Make sure all gasoline fumes are removed from tank before starting welding operations. Fumes in tank can cause a severe explosion if ignited. 8. Drycleaning solvent, P-D-680, used to clean parts, is potentially dangerous to personnel and property. Avoid inhalation of fumes and repeated or prolonged skin exposure. Wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Use in well-ventilated area away from open flame or excessive heat. Flash point is 100 degrees F (38 degrees C). 9. Do not start pump without first priming with water (on most models). Dry operation will damage pump seals and cause pump to fail. After priming, do not run pump more than 3 to 5 minutes without water flowing through it. 10. When tying centrifugal pump to carrier, install bands through frame. Do not secure by banding across channels.

11. Wear MOPP 4 when conducting NBC test. If NBC agents are detected, give the alarm and immediately notify supervisor. During storage, issue, or distribution, stop all operations. Destroy contaminate water when directed to do so. Decontaminate self and equipment when mission permits. 12. Observe all safety procedures when conducting chemical analysis of water. Dangerous chemicals are provided in both test kits. Death, health hazards, or injuries such as severe burns, impaired vision, and internal tissue destruction may be experienced if personnel fail to observe precautions.

NOTE: 2.

Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity. Learning Step / Activity 2. Operate the FAWPSS and perform PMCS. Method of Instruction: Instructor to Student Ratio: Time of Instruction: Media: a. Assemble. 1) Select a flat, solid, debris-free area with adequate terrain drainage. This area should measure approximately 30 feet by 120 feet and be free of overhead obstacles to permit delivery and removal of water storage drums by helicopter. 2) When unpacking the FAWPSS containers, take care to avoid nails which can puncture drums and hoses. 3) First open the packing container. Remove and assemble or position the items. Retain the packaging and packing containers for use during future recovery and system storage. Remove dust caps and plugs from each hose just prior to use of that assembly. NOTE: When connecting the various hose assemblies, note that all hoses are two inches in diameter with the exception of the four hoses which are attached to the four swivels. These hoses are 1-1/2 inches in diameter. 4) Place the 125-GPM centrifugal pump assembly in the center of the assembly area. a) Position the side of the pump that contains the male quickdisconnect coupling so that it faces toward the area where the four distribution nozzles are to be located. Demonstration 1:18 0 hrs Group-paced Instruction

10

b) The side of the pump that contains the female quick-disconnect coupling then faces the area where the water storage and dispensing drums are to be located. Place the suction water hose assembly at the side of the centrifugal pump that contains the female quick-disconnect coupling. c) Attach the double male adapter end of the suction water hose assembly to the female quick-disconnect coupling on the centrifugal pump. 5) Use the towing and lifting yoke assembly as necessary to position two full water storage and dispensing drum assemblies. Make sure that the side of each tank which has the 2-inch elbow coupler is close enough to its respective suction water hose assembly to permit attachment. 6) Connect each of the two suction water hose assemblies to each of the two water storage and dispensing drum assemblies as follows: a) Attach the unconnected end of one of the suction water hose assemblies to the quick-disconnect coupling on the 2-inch elbow located on one side of the water storage and dispensing assemblies. b) Repeat this procedure for the remaining suction water hose assembly. 7) Place the 10-foot discharge water hose assembly at the side of the centrifugal pump assembly to the male coupling on the centrifugal pump. 8) Attach the female quick-disconnect coupling at the end of the discharge water hose assembly to the male coupling on the centrifugal pump. 9) Roll the attached hose away from the centrifugal pump. 10) Attach the female quick-disconnect coupling at the end of the Yfitting components to the unconnected end of the discharge water hose assembly. 11) Attach each of the two 25-foot discharge water hose assemblies to the Y-fitting component as follows: a) Attach the female quick-disconnect coupling at the end of one of 25-foot discharge water hose assemblies to one of the two ends of the Y-fitting component. b) Repeat this procedure for the second 25-foot discharge water hose assembly. 12) Position the two 25-foot discharge water hose assemblies. 13) Attach each of the two 25-foot discharge water hose assemblies to each of the two remaining Y-fitting components as follows:

11

a) Attach the female quick-disconnect coupling located at one end of one of the Y-fitting components to the unconnected end of one of the 25-foot discharge water hose assemblies. b) Repeat this procedure for the remaining Y-fitting component. 14) Position the two Y-fitting components. 15) Attach the female quick-disconnect coupling end of each of the four reducers to the two unconnected ends of each of the two Y-fitting components. 16) Attach one pair of 25-foot discharge water hose assemblies to each of the two reducers on each of the two Y-fitting components as follows: a) Attach the female quick-disconnect coupling at the end of one of these hoses to one of the two reducers on one of the Yfitting components. b) Repeat this procedure for the reducer on the other end of the Y-fitting component. c) Again repeat this procedure, using the second pair of hoses for the two reducers on the second Y-fitting component. 17) Position the four 25-foot discharge water hose assemblies. 18) Unfold and set up each of the two tripod stand assemblies. 19) Position one of the two stands close to the unconnected end of each pair of 25-foot discharge water hose assemblies. 20) Attach one distribution nozzle assembly to each of the four 25-foot discharge water hose assemblies as follows: a) Attach the reducer at the end of one of the four distribution nozzle assemblies to the end of one of the four hoses. b) Repeat this procedure for each of the three remaining distribution nozzle assemblies. b. Perform before-operation PMCS on the FAWPSS. 1) Check Hose Assemblies. 2) Inspect Ball Valve Assemblies. 3) Inspect Nozzle Assemblies. 4) Inspect Nozzle Stand Assemblies. 5) Inspect Towing and Lifting Yokes 6) Inspect Miscellaneous Fittings.

12

c.

Operate the FAWPSS. 1) Prime the pump, open the elbow valve, and start the centrifugal pump engine. 2) Check the entire system for leaks, beginning with the 2-inch elbow couplers on the water storage and dispensing drums. 3) If you discover a leak, shut off the centrifugal pump engine. 4) If the leak is at a quick-disconnect coupling assembly, open and remove the assembly. 5) Inspect the hose assembly for abnormal twisting or ballooning which indicates that the hose is weak. 6) Check the couplings to be certain that sealing gaskets are in place and whether there is damage or the presence of foreign matter. 7) If gaskets are damaged or missing, obtain these items from the overpack kit and replace. 8) If couplings are damaged, replace the entire assembly with a spare assembly from the overpack kit. If foreign matter is present, thoroughly flush the hose. Refasten the assembly. 9) Start the engine of the centrifugal pump and repeat the above procedure until no leaks are seen. 10) Test each of the four distribution nozzles. If they do not operate at full flow, stop the centrifugal pump engine. 11) Check the strainer inside the nozzle, clean if needed, and replace. 12) Start the centrifugal pump engine, and repeat the procedures described until all distribution nozzles operate at full flow. 13) Assign two workers to fill the FAWPSS which contains 500-gallon drums. There are two methods of filling the 500-gallon collapsible drums. 14) One method is filling the drums directly from the PWS/DS. The other method is to use the 125-GPM pump that comes with the FAWPSS. 15) The position and the tasks of the crew vary with each of these methods. 16) When drums are filled directly from the water supply point: a) Assign one worker to the control valves of the filling point. Make this worker responsible for controlling the flow of water to the drums.

13

b) Assign the other worker to the drum. Make this worker responsible for preparing the drum for filling, making all connections, and monitoring the filling operation. 17) When using the 125-GPM pump, you still need two workers for the filling operation. a) Have one worker operate the 125-GPM pump and control the flow of water. b) Assign the other to the drum with the same responsibility as in the method described before. 18) If the drums are to be delivered by helicopter to the supported unit, you will need a vehicle to remove the filled drums to the loading point. d. Perform during-operation PMCS on the FAWPSS. 1) Check Hose Assemblies. 2) Inspect Nozzle Assemblies. 3) Inspect Miscellaneous Fittings. e. Stop operation of the FAWPSS. 1) Drain the water from the partially-filled dispensing drum or drums by operating one of the dispensing nozzles. 2) Turn off the engine on the 125-GPM pump and disconnect the suction and discharge hoses. f. Dismantle the FAWPSS. 1) Continue issuing water until the drums are empty. 2) Disassemble the FAWPSS in the reverse order of assembly. 3) Prior to repackaging, drain, dry, and then cap and plug all hose assemblies. 4) Drain, collapse, and fold the water storage and dispensing drum. 5) Store component parts in the original containers in which they were received. 6) Replace dust caps and plugs on each hose prior to repackaging. 7) Disassemble component parts of the various hose assemblies and other fittings in the following order for repackaging: a) Water storage and dispensing bag assembly. b) Distribution nozzle assemblies.
