A gas contaminated with hydrocarbons, or other chemicals,
enters the bottom of an ABSORBER column and flows upward
contacting the counterflowing LEAN OIL stream. The LEAN OIL
preferentially absorbs the contaminants from the gas, becoming
RICH OIL. RICH OIL is sent to the STRIPPER where the ab-
sorbed contaminants are removed by heating the RICH OIL, va-
porizing the contaminants. The rich oil is thus regenerated as lean
oil and recycled to the ABSORBER to complete the process loop.
For a given gas mixture, the fraction of each component in the gas
that is absorbed by the lean oil is a function of the equilibrium
phase relationship at the components and the lean oil, the relative
flow rates and the contact stages of the ABSORBER. The phase
reaction is a fu nction of the pressure, temperature and composi-
tion of the lean oil. The lean oil is refrigerated to improve the
eHiciency of the absorption process.
The STRIPPER column is operated at a low pressure and high
temperature. The elevated temperature lowers the partial pres-
sure of the recovered lighter contaminants, vaporizing them
overhead as a gas. The overhead gases are cooled, condensing
them to a liquid state to be sent to storage.
Since hig her oil ci rcu lation rates require more energy for heating,
cooling, and pumping, PETROGAS' optimum design uses the
minimum possible oil circulation rate.
The lowest molecular weig ht lean oil is selected for each applica-
tion. This will be fixed by lean oil vapor pressure, ABSORBER
operating temperature and pressure, and the components to be
recovered. The proper selection of the lean oil and stripping
parameters are necessary to minimize lean oil losses and
maximize absorption capacity.

The proven PETROGAS Absorption
System offers many advantages over
other types of systems_
-Defrosting of frozen chillers, causing down lime, or requiring a
complex switching system, is not required, PETROGAS Ab-
sorption Systems operate at a temperature above 32F so no
freezing of saturated water vapors can occur.
-Costly maintenance and special materials of construction re-
quired in cryogenic refrigeration type systems are eliminated.
-Regeneration of Beds, causing downtime, or requiring a complex
switching system, is not required.
-PETROGAS ABSORBE R Systems are the safest of any system
available. The inlet gases may be processed at atmospheric
pressure. Compression is not required. No heat is applied to
hydrocarbon-air mixtures that could result in combustion.
-There are no carbon beds requiring periodic replacement.
- ABSORBER fluid replacement is not required.
-Low operating costs, Low maintenance costs.
-Completely skid mounted and factory operationally tested, mini-
mizing field installation time and cost.
-Gases satu rated with water vapors do not affect the efficiency of
the system.
-Has 100% turn down capability without decline in the operating
efficiency.
-Can meet all EPAdesignated emission attainment levels. Tests
have shown that PETROGAS Systems continuously meet and
exceed the design recovery or emission standards.
-The pressure drop of the emissions through the ABSORBER is
less than 0.5" water column.
-Neither an increase nor decrease in the vapor saturation, relative
composition of the vapors, or Reid Vapor Pressure wi II affect the
recovery efficiency of the system. Refrigeration type systems
can recover only limited amounts of ethane, propane and
butane relative to the concentration of the pentanes+,
-The recovered vapors are not contaminated and will be dis-
charged as a marketable grade product, able to be returned to
existing bulk storage tanks.
-For gasoline vapor recovery from a loading terminal,
PETROGAS Absorption Systems require an average of 0,85
kwh per 1000 gallons of gasoline loaded, Refrigeration type
systems require 4.11-4,3 kwh per 1000 gallons of gasoline
loaded.
-Since only minor quantities of water are condensed, the waste
water to disposal is reduced,
-No ethylene glycol or trichloroethylene are required for use as
defrost brines.
PETROGAS Absorption Systems are designed to operate
continuously, or intermittently in a fUlly automatic mode.
PETROGAS' Engineering Department offers chemical process
and mechanical design consulting assistance in solving your
most difficult vapor recovery applications. Over 15 years of
proven performance guarantees you state of the art technology
and the simplest, most reliable and cost effective system available
for your application. PETROGAS offers a basic system, with
options to allow each unit to be customized to meet your unique
specifications at a fraction of the cost of a custom designed and
fabricated system. PETROGAS systems have proven superior
efficiency in the recovery of all types of hydrocarbons and chemi-
cals from vapor streams, while meeting the most stringent of
environmental emission standards.
The high performance system has the lowest energy consump-
tion in the industry. The units retains about 93% of the energy it
recovers. This results in an operating expense of only 7% of the
recovered product.

Maintenance
The system is specifically designed and constructed for Jaw
cost maintenance and operational simplicity. Minimizing
rotary equipment, minimizes your costs. Servicing the unit
requires no high technology maintenance procedures.
Replacement and spare parts are available from
PETROGAS' Factory Service Department.
All components of the PETROGAS Absorption System are
of industrial grade quality, never lower priced commercial
grades. Components are carefully selected to be readily
available from your local industrial refrigeration parts sup-
plier and can be repaired or adjusted by any capable
industrial refrigeration service technician. No high technol-
ogy, special know-how is required.
Field Installation
PETROGAS Absorption Systems are supplied as complete
factory package units, including instrumentation, piping,
and electrical, on a structural skid. The skid is designed to
distribute the weight of the components evenly, eliminating
the need for special piers and heavy concrete foundations.
All Systems are completely assembled, charged with refrig-
erant, and fully operated at the factory prior to shipment,
assuring you a trouble free startup. The upper sections of
the ABSORBER and the STRIPPER columns will be dis-
mantled for shipping after testing. Field installation will
usually require no more than re-installing the upper sections
of the ABSORBER and STRIPPER columns, setting the
storage tanks, connecting the primary electrical power to
the control panel, connecti ng pipi ng from the vapor inlet and
recovered product piping to bulk storage tank.
Factory trained engineers and technicians are available to
assist you in installation, startup and maintenance.

Facility
PETROGAS Systems are manufactured in a modern fully
equipped 30,000 sq. ft. facility, located on 21 acres of land,
at the intersection of two major highways, 35 and 521, 42
miles south of Houston, Texas. The facility is qualified to
fabricate to the ASME Code.
Safety
Only non-volatile working fluids and absorbents are used
throughout each vapor recovery system. Each unit is
carefulIy designed and manufactured for the safe operation
in hazardous locations. The systems are thoroughly in-
spected, tested and approved. The design is such that any
malfunction in the system will not create back pressure on
the incoming vapor or vent system.
Petrogas has provided vapor recovery systems for 15 years
and is proud 10 have as its clients all the major petroleum,
petrochemical and chemical companies of the world. A client
listing is available upon request.
