GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE WORKSHOP: Mental Disorders and Dementia

This first Integrative Medicine conference to be organised by the Cultural Association of the Dzogchen Community in Spain [Asociacin Cultural de la Comunidad Dzogchen de Espaa] and the School of Tibetan Medicine of the Shang Shung Institute is aimed at raising awareness and sharing the results of work undertaken by numerous Integrative Medicine professionals - both in Spain and overseas. This field of medicine adopts a holistic approach to the treatment of patients and combines techniques from traditional medicine with allopathic and complementary techniques.

The workshop (which will take place on 10, 11 and 12 January at the Casal del Mdico) will be focused on the contributions made to the treatment of mental disorders and dementia by allopathic, Chinese, homoeopathic and Tibetan approaches to medicine. Professionals from all areas of medicine - psychiatry, homoeopathy, neurology, Chinese medicine, Tibetan medicine, etc. - will take part in the event.

MEDICINE OF THE FUTURE Integrative Medicine adopts an inclusive approach that combines the therapies of conventional medical treatments with alternative treatments and those from traditional medicine in a way that considers not only the physical symptoms but also the psychological and social symptoms, as well as all other possible factors affecting the patient.

In short, it is a method that places the emphasis on treating the person as a whole; an inclusive approach that facilitates management of the illness at all levels.

This workshop aims to encourage dialogue and discussion between professionals working in various fields of medicine in different parts of the world, and to connect professionals from Catalonia with others working on similar initiatives.

The event is open to the general public but mainly intended for professionals, patients and their families. Tickets cost 125 euros. A 50% discount is applicable for those on low incomes (students, pensioners, the unemployed, etc.).

THE ORGANISERS The School of Tibetan M edicine of the Shang Shung Institute is the first school of Tibetan medicine in the west where Tibetan medicine can be studied in English according to the four-year curriculum of traditional schools of Tibetan medicine in Tibet and India. Besides the official course of study, the school offers specialised complementary courses taught by guest professors on a number of related subjects.

The school forms part of the International Shang Shung Institute - a non-profit organisation founded in 1989 by Professor Chogyal Namkhai Norbu and inaugurated in 1990 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama - and is dedicated to the preservation and study of Tibetan culture at centres in Italy, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Australia, Austria and the Netherlands. http://www.shangshung.org/home/2011/08/23/school-of-tibetan-medicine/

LECTURES INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE Mental Disorders and Dementia

FRIDAY, 10 JANUARY. INTRODUCTION TO INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE M oderator: Eloisa lvarez Centeno Speaker: Chgyal Nam khai Norbu Title: Total Integration: Beyond the Relative Health Condition Speaker: Phuntsog W angm o Title: Bridging between Eastern and Western Medicine Speaker: Paolo Roberti di Sarsina Title: Traditional and Non-Conventional Medicine: a multi-contextual approach Speakers: Pepa Ninou and Inm a Nogus Title: The Approach to Health within the National Values Plan of Catalonia [the Plan Nacional de Valores] Lecture: Today we face a situation of global and systematic crisis with structural, significant and procedural implications; a crisis that demands growth and progress in human quality. The National Values Plan of Catalonia [the Plan Nacional de Valors] is a proposal for development towards a new model of reality that places the focus squarely on people. It reflects the ideology that any real transformation of our current societal model must first involve changes in the way we perceive people - the person must be afforded total acknowledgement. That change of mentality will then enable the development of new values, new attitudes and new ways of life. In this regard, and learning from past moments in the history of humanity and with a view to maintaining the progress of Catalonia and its people, the National Values Plan of Catalonia identifies those trends of a constructive nature that are already taking place within our society and proposes a number of transition processes in every area that upholds that society (education, healthcare, the economy, the environment, justice, culture, security, politics, etc.). The goal is to lay a new path - a path towards synthesis, an integrated vision - aimed at encouraging a process of transformation for the personal and collective fulfilment of Catalonia.

SATURDAY, 11 JANUARY. MENTAL DISORDERS M oderator: Eva Juan Linares Speaker: M ara Teresa Herreras Title: Homoeopathic Medicine: levels of therapy. An explanation of Unicist Homoeopathy Lecture: Homoeopathic health practitioners must perceive that which is peculiar, characteristic and extraordinary in the signs and symptoms of each patient and have knowledge on the curative properties of substances in such a way that, by applying the Law of Similars, he or she may find the substance most similar to the altered state of each patient. Only then will it be possible to devise a basis on which to empower the vis medicatrix naturae of the patient to regain their health and consequently see how those signs and symptoms disappear. Speaker: Thubten Phuntsok Title: Introduction to Mental Disorders according to Traditional Tibetan Medicine Speaker: Li Qilin Title: The influence of Emotions on the Energy of Organs according to Traditional Chinese Medicine Lecture: Traditional Chinese Medicine establishes direct relationships between our emotions and the obstruction of energy from certain organs in the human body. In the long term, such obstructions of energy can influence degenerative diseases.

SATURDAY, 11 JANUARY (PM). APPLICATIONS M oderator: Tom s lvaro Naranjo Speaker: Ishar Dalm au i Santam aria Title: Integrative Medicine: An Experience of Research and Education in Barcelona Explanation: The integration of non-conventional medicine - more commonly known as alternative medicine or complementary medicine - into the conventional biomedical system in the West requires non-conventional medicine to have greater knowledge of the ways in which its various therapies and techniques act, as well as the effectiveness and safety of its treatments. Such knowledge would facilitate the acceptance and incorporation of nonconventional medicine into the public healthcare system, as well as its inclusion in the curricula followed by health and life science degree programmes as part of the training

17

given to future healthcare and research professionals. Furthermore, scientific analysis of the integration achieved by non-conventional medicine and biomedicine in the West would enable the drawing up of specific protocols capable of forming the required basis for an optimum combined therapeutic strategy so that treatments may become more effective and safe, as well as more economically sustainable. Research must always lead to improvements in clinical treatment. The development of a scientific theory on integrative medicine would also be of great interest to enabling the formulation of new methods for basic research and clinical research in this field. Nonetheless, integrative medicine researchers must consider the existence of clear conceptual differences between non-conventional medicine and biomedicine when designing research studies. This reality therefore requires us to acknowledge the existence of different types of research playing complementary roles in the development of balanced and mature results on the scientific basis of integrative medicine. Speaker: M ara Teresa Herreras Title: Homoeopathy and Mental Disorders: personal clinical experience Explanation of a case of Alzheimers Disease Speaker: Phuntsog W angm o Title: The Treatment of Mental Disorders according to Tibetan Medicine

Speaker: Sergio Abanades Len Title: Personal experience of integrative medicine in neuropsychiatric disorders

Explanation: The Director of the OmegaZeta Clinic will explain a new integrative medicine model and its application to neuropsychiatric illness. The OmegaZeta Clinic is a pioneering integrative medicine centre in the city of Barcelona. This lecture will present the development and results of its integrative medical care model; a model that combines therapies from conventional medicine with scientifically-validated complementary medicines in a totally holistic manner, in a multidisciplinary environment and by applying the latest advancements in biomedical technology. Particular focus will be placed on the assessment and treatment of neuropsychiatric illness.

SUNDAY, 12 JANUARY. DEMENTIA M oderator: M Carm en M artnez Speaker: Neus Rodrguez Title: Psychosocial intervention in Dementia on the Uszheimer Programme Screening of the documentary on Alzheimers Disease that received a 2013 Sol Tura Award. Speaker: Guillem M art Title: Dementia spectrum: dealing with the ill person Explanation: The symptoms will be defined and described, and an explanation will be offered as to how and when they manifest in such dementias as Alzheimers Disease. A second section will suggest strategies and possible steps that could help carers manage all these symptoms and improve the emotional state of both patient and carer. Speaker: Lobsang Tenzin Title: The Traditional Tibetan Medicine Approach to the Western Concept of Dementia Speaker: Francisco Barnosell Pi Title: Differential Diagnosis in Dementia or Schizophrenia, applying an Integrative Medicine approach. A persona view

Explanation: Orthodox medicine should not be at odds with research into new paradigms given their results - for the discovery of sufficient empirical reasoning to scientifically confirm them. To that end, an open and scrupulous mentality must be adopted that is capable of considering other diagnostic possibilities. Cases will be presented involving patients diagnosed with dementia or schizophrenia in which, under different investigation guidelines, the existence of other less severe possibilities have been shown to exist, with a direct and significant affect on the course of treatment.
