MATERIALS A. General: Use the same caulking and sealant system materials throughout the project. Colors: Colors of caulking and sealant materials will be selected by a SAUDI ARAMCO Representative from the manufacturer's standard colors. Compatibility: Before purchasing of each specified sealant, investigate the compatibility of the joint fillers and other materials in the joint system. Provide only materials which are known to be fully compatible with the actual installation condition, as shown by manufacturer's published data or certification. D. Sealant Backer Rod: Compressible rod stock of polyethylene foam, polyethylene jacketed polyurethane foam, butyl rubber foam, neoprene foam or other flexible, permanent, durable non absorptive material as recommended for compatibility with sealant by the sealant manufacturer. The rod will control the joint depth for sealant, break bond of sealant at bottom of the joint, form optimum shape of sealant bead on the back side, and provide a highly compressible backer to minimize the possibility of sealant extrusion when the joint is compressed.

Sealant: Silicon based, single component, chemical, curing to withstand movement of up to 50 percent of the joint width and to be satisfactorily applied throughout a temperature range of 40 - 120 degree F shall be used for roof flashing, interior glazing, duct work and any general interior usage for sealant. General Electric Silicone Sealant 1200 or a suitable equal, approved by SAUDI ARAMCO, shall be used. Sealant: Polysulfide, 2 part complying with federal specs. TT-S00227C Type II Class A, exterior control joints, exterior glazing, anodized window systems, door frames and any other exterior application, not mentioned previously. 3.02
PREPARATION WORK A. Inspection: Examine joint surfaces to receive caulking and sealant materials, and report to SAUDI ARAMCO Representative, all unacceptable conditions. Cleaning: 1. General: Thoroughly clean all joints scheduled to receive caulking and sealant materials. Rake joint to full width and depth. Remove loose particles present or resulting from cleaning operations, by blowing out joints with oil free compressed air. All traces of bituminous materials must be removed. Porous Surface: Clean surface, such as concrete by grinding, blast-cleaning, mechanical abrading, acid washing or a combination of these methods to provide a clean, sound base surface for caulking and sealant adhesion. Remove form oils by blasting-cleaning. Insure that concrete is fully cured and free from laitance, loose aggregate and surface treatments. If surface treatments are present, test for adhesion before proceeding with sealing work. Nonporous Surfaces: Clean surfaces, such as metal and glass, in accordance with system manufacturer's recommendations. Do not use solvents that leave a residue. Apply and remove solvents with clean white cloths. Do not allow solvents to air dry without wiping.

APPLICATION A. General: Employ only proven installation techniques which will insure that sealants will be deposited in uniform, continuous ribbons without gaps or air pockets and with complete "wetting" of the joint bond surfaces equally on opposite sides. Except as otherwise indicated,

fill sealant rabbet to a slightly concave surface, slightly below adjoining surfaces. Where horizontal joints are between a horizontal surface and a vertical surface, fill joint to form a slight cove, so that the joint will not trap moisture and dirt. B. Back-up: Install back-up material to a proper depth in all joints. Use back-up material of a suitable size and shape, so that when compressed (25 to 50%), it will fit in all joints as required. When using a back-up of hose or rod stock, roll the material into the joint to avoid lengthwise stretching. Do not twist or braid the hose or rod stock. Use bond-breaker strips in all joints, where sufficient room for back-up material does not exist and where required by manufacturer's recommendations. Primer: Prime surfaces in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and allow to dry before applying sealing material. Caulking and Sealing: Follow manufacturer's instructions regarding mixing, pot life and application procedure. Do not apply sealing materials when the temperature of the material, air or substrate is below 7.2 Deg. C (45 Deg.F) or during wet or humid weather. Apply sealing materials in full bead and force into joint. Polysulfide Sealant Installation: Comply with standards issued by Thiokol Chemical Corporation, except where more stringent requirements have been shown or specified, or issued as recommendations by the sealant manufacturer. Tooling: Tool joints to compress the compound into the joint. Except as recommended by the sealing material manufacturer, do not use liquid solutions to moisten tools. Remove masking tape immediately after cooling. All sleeves penetrating floors or fire rated walls or partitions shall be sealed by an approved sealant equivalent to the rating of the floor/wall partitions. All ducts and pipes which pass through fire wall shall have sheet metal sleeve around them.
