GAYLORD The popular

Mark Mellon Triathlon

returns to Otsego County
Saturday, June 29, for the
events 33rd anniversary,
offering a little something for
everyone.
The event, which takes
place at Otsego Lake County
Park, boasts an Olympic
triathlon, a Sprint triathlon,
an Olympic/Sprint triathlon
relay and a 5K run.
Were very excited for this
years event, says race coor-
dinator David Smith. Were
expecting more numbers.
Weve already got more
entries than last year.
The event welcomes ath-
letes from all over the
Midwest and of all ages. With
age groups spanning from 7
and below to 70 and older,
the Mark Mellon serves as an
ideal event for the commu-
nity and for beginners,
Smith said.
The race will boast many
experienced athletes, too.
Current course records
will potentially be broken,
Smith said. Weve got very
competitive triathletes com-
ing back.
For extra incentive, prize
money will be offered in both
the male and female Olympic
triathlon events. Top prizes
are $300, $200 and $100 for
first, second and third place
overall.
All racers have a chance at
earning prizes as more than
$1,000 in giveaways will be
raffled off.
The Mark Mellon Triathlon
was formed by Dennis and
Judy Mellon after their son,
Mark, died in a motorcycle
accident at the age of 16.
The tradition was picked
up by the Smith family after a
one-year lapse a few years
ago. David Smith, an All-
American triathlete, directs
the competition along with
his father Dan.
This will be the fourth
year our family puts this race
on, he said. My dad was a
classmate of Mark Mellon
and knew him really well,
and no one wants to see the
longest standing triathlon in
the state of Michigan disap-
pear.
The event kicks off at 7:45
a.m. with the pre-race brief-
ing on the beach.
The mens Olympic
Triathlon then starts at 8
a.m., with the women and
relays promptly following
five minutes later. Costing
$70 in registration fees, the
Olympic portion consists of a
1K swim, 40K bike and 10K
run.
The males Sprint triathlon,
a 500-meter swim, 20K bike
and 5K run, begins at 8:30
a.m. with the womens and
relays succeeding it by five
minutes. The cost of the
Sprint is $60.
The Olympic relay costs
$130 while the Sprint relay is
$110. Teams can be either
two or three people.
The 5K run, costing $30,
begins at 8:45 a.m.
A post-race lunch will
begin at 10:30 a.m. The event
wraps up at 11 a.m. with the
awards ceremony.
The St. Mary Athletic
Association provides much
of the races volunteer power.
Sponsors include Gaylord
Eye Care, McNamara
Insurance, Advantage
Audiology & Hearing Center,

MIO It was another suc-
cessful campaign for the Mio
softball team of coach Sean
DeFlorio. The lightning-
quick, thunder-strong
Thunderbolts captured their
third straight Div. 4 district
title and dominated play
once again in the North Star
League.
The Thunderbolts shut out
Arenac Eastern 6-0 and
Lincoln Alcona 9-0 in the Div.
4 district tournament that
was held on June 1 at Alcona.
The girls used the same
formula for success that they
used during the regular sea-
son as savvy senior Jalen
DeFlorio served up the
smoke from the circle and
received loads of help from
the high-powered
Thunderbolt offense.
DeFlorio, one of the top
pitchers in the region, used a
lethal mixture of deliveries to
silence the bats of both
opponents. Against Arenac
Eastern, Jalen recorded a
two-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
Against Alcona, she fired a
two-hitter with 12 Ks.
Taylor Holzwarth helped
the Thunderbolt cause at the
plate, clubbing a towering
three-run home run to break
the game with Arenac
Eastern wide open. She also
hammered a single and dou-
ble.
Leslie Asman also helped
the cause. Line Drive Leslie
laced a single and double.
In the victory over Alcona,
it was slugging first baseman
Stephanie Mangutz sending
one into the stratosphere for
a three-run shot and Asman
adding a two-run triple and
walking twice.
Cassidy DeFlorio cracked
two singles and knocked in
two runs.
Mio went on to defeat
Merrill 9-1 in the regional
semifinal at Bay City All-
Saints on June 8 before run-
ning into a powerful, talent-
ed Ubly squad in the regional
title game and losing 10-3 to
end the season. Ubly went on
to play in the D-4 state finals
and finish as runner-up to
Kalamazoo Christian.

GAYLORD The 2013 sea-
son was an unusual one in
Ski Valley baseball. Normally,
one or two teams tend to
dominate but this year there
wasnt a dominant team.
Mancelona and Onaway
ended up sharing the league
crown, each with a 14-2
record. Johannesburg-
Lewiston was on their heels
and in contention until the
final makeup game was
played. The Cardinals of
coach Rick Guild ended up
with a 13-3 mark. Gaylord St.
Mary also had a strong sea-
son. Bellaire and Central
Lake gave everyone a battle.
With few exceptions, there
were no easy games on the
schedule for any of the
league teams.
The 2013 Ski Valley All-
Conference roster features
four players from J-L, three
from Onaway, two from
Mancelona, two from St.
Mary and one from Bellaire.
Several J-L players had
outstanding individual cam-
paigns, including senior
mound ace Jake Newell, a
lefty who threw seeds all sea-
son long. Also representing J-
L on the first-team roster are
junior shortstop Coalton
Huff, slugging senior out-
fielder Alex Payne, a four-
year starter who capped a
brilliant prep career for the
Cardinals and coach Guild,
and senior second baseman
and pitcher Cole Nagy as an
at-large pick.
Representing Onaway on
the first team are junior lefty
Andrew Prow, who served up
the smoke as the Cardinals
No. 1 pitcher and was reliable
as the sunrise. Slugging sen-
ior outfielder Andrew Perry
also made the grade and
hard-hitting junior Chris
Cleaver was an at-large
choice.
Mancelona, which fielded
a very young team for coach
Jim VanWagoner this season,
featured savvy sophomore
catcher Cole VanWagoner
and junior infielder Logan
Borst on the first team.
VanWagoner and Borst were
both returning starters for
the young Ironmen this sea-
son and more than lived up
to expectations.
Sweet-swinging senior
Matt Spyhalski represents the
Snowbirds of St. Mary as a
first-team infielder and he is
joined by outstanding junior
outfielder Nick Harrington.
Bellaire junior infielder
Adam Underwood also made
the first team.

Valley roster:

GRAND RAPIDS The
Gaylord and Petoskey golf
teams competed in the Div. 2
state tournament held on
Friday and Saturday, June 14-
15, at The Meadows course
on the campus of Grand
Valley State University. The
Blue Devils took 12th place
overall in the final team
standings with a two-day
team score of 693 and
Petoskey was just a stroke
behind in 13th place with a
two-day total of 694.
Gaylord struggled the first
day, earning a team score of
361, but came back strong on
day two to earn a respectable
team score of 332.
This was a huge accom-
plishment to come back on
day two after finishing 15th
the first day with the highest
team score, said Gaylord
coach Tom Johnson. The
second day we finished
eighth out of the 15 teams
with a much more
respectable score of 332. We
could have folded the tent
after the first day but Im
really proud of the fact that
my seniors especially didn't
want to leave their career
with a bad taste in their
mouths about high school
golf.
If anything could go wrong
it did on the first day,
Johnson reported, as all of
the Gaylord golfers posted
one of their highest scores of
the season with the excep-
tion of Cam Laug.
Laug, who has been
Gaylords No. 1 golfer all sea-
son, shot 78 on day one to tie
for 12th place, only three
shots back of the leaders.
On day two, the Blue Devils
bounced back big time as a
team, especially the three
seniors. Nick Fennell fired an
80, followed by Kyle Bazzani
with an 81 and Anthony
Tomaski with an 84.
The seniors will be missed
and very difficult to replace,
Johnson said.
Laug shot 87 on day two,
giving him a 36-hole total of
165, good for 31st place over-
all for both days. Fellow
sophomore Mike Misiak shot
89.
Petoskey earned a team
score of 341 on day one and
353 on day two.
Silas Lee paced the
Northmen with a two-day
total of 165, earning a very
good score of 79 on day one
and a respectable score of 86
on day two. Colin Green (88-
87 175) was runner-up for
the Northmen.
Cam Ludlow had the low
round for Petoskey on day
one, shooting 78. Jesse Peters
was the No. 3 golfer for
Petoskey on day two, shoot-
ing 104. Tyler Spiegl (96-92)
posted a 36-hole total of 188
and Adam McCain shot 88 on
day two.
Grand Rapids Christian
won the 2013 team title with
two very good rounds of 315
and 321 for a total of 636
strokes. Marshall (322-320
642) was second and
Cranbrook-Kingswood (324-
321 645) was third.
Ryan Bayer of Comstock
Park was the individual D-2
medalist with two very good
rounds of 75 and 74 for a
two-day total of 149. Nick
Carlson of Hamilton (75-76
151) was runner-up and
Spencer Schab of Forest Hills
Northern (76-76 152) was
third.

CHEBOYGAN Hard-
throwing, strike zone-
pounding Cheboygan right-
hander Damon Proctor has
earned recognition once
again as the Straits Area
Conference Player of the
Year.
The senior was the ace for
coach Kevin Ballers Chiefs
this season as they dominat-
ed league play and captured
the 2013 title. The league
crown was part of a historic
season for the Chiefs, who
posted an excellent 24-7-1
record and won the first dis-
trict championship in base-
ball in school history.
Proctor, a three-time All-
Conference linebacker for
the Chiefs on the gridiron,
has an intimidating presence
on the hill and plays with a
Roger Clemens-type intensi-
ty. He was a sparkling 9-1-1
this season with a micro-
scopic 0.66 earned-run-aver-
age. He served up smoke in
the strike zone with a four-
pitch arsenal that kept
opposing batters on their
heels and off the bases.
Proctor rang up 127 strike-
outs and issued just 19 walks.
He was by no means a one-
trick pony, however. Proctor
produced at the plate as well
and also in the field. He led
the Chiefs in home runs this
season and was a menace to
enemy pitchers with the bat
in his hands, especially with
runners on base. His clutch
two-out, two-strike, two-run
double against the fence to
left field in Cadillac helped to
secure the 4-0 victory over
Glen Lake in the Div. 2
regional opener on Saturday,
June 8.
He will be continuing his
career on the diamond at
Muskegon Community
College, where he was
recruited to play third base
but very well could end up
firing fastballs as well.
This is the second time
Proctor has been named the
SAC Player of the Year. He
also achieved the honor after
his sophomore season. He
may have won it as a junior,
too, but unfortunately
missed the entire campaign
because of knee surgery.
This was a bounce-back
season for the young man
and a remarkable one.
Joining Proctor on the first-
team All-SAC roster is sweet-
swinging senior slugger Stan
Swiderek in the outfield.
Swiderek, who also fared well
as Cheboygans No. 2 pitcher
this season, led the Chiefs in
several offensive categories,
recording 35 hits and 19
steals while securing a team-
high .340 average.
Senior Jake Juillet made
the second-team roster as an
outfielder and junior short-
stop Zach Schley was picked
as a utility player for the sec-
ond team.
Sophomore catcher Nate
Stempky, who owns a cannon
for an arm and is as reliable
as the times tables behind
the plate this season, was
honorable mention.
Cheboygan senior was ace for league champions; slugging
Swiderek is also first-team selection

CRAWFORD COUNTY
The Department of Natural
Resources announced this
week that fish and insect
communities will soon ben-
efit from another habitat
project in the South Branch
of the Au Sable River.
Contractors will place large
woody complexes
clusters of a small num-
ber of trees in select areas
from the mouth of Thayer
Creek in Crawford County to
the main stem of the Au
Sable River. This will create a
better environment for fish
and other organisms.
The Au Sable River is one
of the country's most
notable cold-water rivers.
High groundwater inputs
provide excellent water
temperature for cold-water
fish in most streams in the
watershed, including the
South Branch of the Au
Sable River. Historically, the
river has been noted for
clear, cold, stable flow.
Clusters of woody debris
and high gradient create an
ideal habitat for a produc-
tive and diverse fishery.
European settlement of
the region stripped areas
along the Au Sable of its nat-
ural woody debris in the last
half of the 1800s, creating
problems that continue to
exist today. These problems
include a scarcity of wood in
portions of the stream chan-
nel and near-shore areas,
and excessive amounts of
sand.
Efforts to restore fisheries
in the South Branch of the
Au Sable River have been
ongoing for more than 10
years. Recently, the DNR
Fisheries Division contract-
ed with Restoration
Dredging, Inc. to assist in
these activities. The final
two-year segment of a 10-
year commitment to restore
the river system will occur
between June 2013 and July
2015.
Restoration Dredging,
Inc. will be responsible for
planning and implementing
the placement of large
woody debris complexes
into the South Branch of the
Au Sable River, on private
and public shorelines.
Landowner permission will
be obtained for work along
private shorelines.
All trees will be transport-
ed and placed into the river
solely by helicopter. Trees
will be harvested on either
state or federal land. The
placement sites will be dis-
cussed in a public review
process before they are
approved by Fisheries
Division.
Landowners along the
South Branch of the Au
Sable River in Crawford
County will have an oppor-
tunity for their property to
be considered for stream
enhancement locations and
contribute to ongoing reha-
bilitation efforts. Permission
will be required from
landowners to place one or
more large woody debris
structures on the river bot-
tom of their property after
Sept. 1, 2013.
This rehabilitation project
is an example of the DNR's
commitment to protecting
natural resources and
ensuring sustainable recre-
ation use and enjoyment.
The enhancements in the
South Branch of the Au
Sable River enables a strong
natural resource-based
economy in Crawford
County and builds upon
strong economic relation-
ships and partnerships
between the DNR, the
USDA Forest Service and
area businesses. Local sub-
contractors on this project
include Northpoint
Fisheries Management in
Grayling and S&J Excavating
in Roscommon.
Construction Helicopters,
Inc. of Howell is providing
the aviation portion of this
project.
Questions on this rehabil-
itation initiative can be
directed to Tim Cwalinski,
fisheries biologist for the
Northern Lake Huron
Management Unit at 989-
732-3541, extension 5072.

There is nothing quite as festive, relaxing
and FUN as an evening full of music and
food of the tropics. Well dont book that trip
south, because next Thursday evening, June
27th from 5 to 10 pm, the tropics are coming
to Gaylord as Marsh Ridge Resort presents
their 5th Annual Island Night at Jacs Place.
There will be plenty of live music, a host of
tantalizing tropical appetizers, entrees,
desserts and drink specials (including the
very enticing sounding 5 OClock
Somewhere and Coco Cabana drinks) plus
dancing and more.
Set high upon the hills overlooking the
splendor of northern Michigans captivating
scenic woodlands, the staff at the locally
owned Marsh Ridge Resort, located just
south of Gaylord, has been offering area resi-
dents and Northern Michigan visitors the
ultimate in golf, lodging, dining, as well as
facilities for banquet and group meetings for
over five decades. Marsh Ridge offers guests
an above and beyond the ordinary experi-
enceall year long.
We are one of the best values in Northern
Michigan, states Marsh Ridge owner, Larry
Bowden. We have earned a solid reputation
over the years for offering world class golf,
lodging and dining right here in the heart of
the Gaylord Golf Mecca. What people may
not realize is that we also offer facilities for
weddings, reunions, anniversaries, business
and group meetings and more, and can
accommodate up to 125 people. We can also
cater those events, and offer rooms for out of
town guests.
Marsh Ridge Resort was originally called
Ken-Mar On The Hill, named after
founders Kenneth and Margaret Atha. The
resort first encompassed forty-three acres
and included three lodges; a main lodge
which is now the beautifully renovated
Scandinavian, and two additional build-
ings which are the current Fjord townhouse
and the Visby lodge.
In 1980, a businessman from Troy,
Michigan; Jim Kohler, purchased the resort,
renamed it Norden Hem (Northern Home),
added several buildings and established the
current entrance off Old 27. Jack Bott pur-
chased the property in 1992, made extensive
renovations including the current restaurant,
which continues to bear his name; Jacs
Place. Larry Bowden, who has an extensive
background in development and resort man-
agement in Northern Michigan, including
involvement in such leading residential and
time-share communities as Guthrie Lakes,
Michaywe, Pinestead Reef in Traverse City,
Shanty Creek and Beaver Creek Resort,
bought the hotel properties in 2005, and the
restaurant and golf course in 2008.
In addition to being Northern Michigans
number one tropical hot spot once a year
for Island Night, Jacs Place restaurant at
Marsh Ridge Resort offers what has been
hailed as one the most incredibly delicious
dining experiences in Northern Michigan.
The restaurant offers daily specials, a happy
hour Sundays through Thursdays from 3 to 6
pm, live music every Thursday evening, and
the facilities famous pizza, which has been
proclaimed as one of the best in the
northbringing diners back time and time
again.
Dont miss Island Night next Thursday,
June 27th at Marsh Ridge - a locally owned
dining, golf and lodging experience that truly
goes above and beyond the ordinary. Be
sure to visit www.marshridge.com for the lat-
est updates for events at Marsh Ridge.
Enjoy an evening of
tropical music, food and fun
during Island Night at

Choosing a locally owned store
generates almost four times as
much economic benefit for the
surrounding region as shopping at
a chain, a new study has conclud-
ed. The analysis also found that
eating at a local restaurant pro-
duces more than twice the local
economic impact of dining at a
chain restaurant.
The research firm Civic
Economics analyzed data from fif-
teen independent retailers and
seven independent restaurants, all
located in Salt Lake City, and com-
pared their impact on the local
economy with four chain retail
stores (Barnes & Noble, Home
Depot, Office Max, and Target) and
three national restaurant chains
(Darden, McDonalds, and P.F.
Changs).
The study found that the local
retailers return an average of 52
percent of their revenue to the
local economy, compared with just
14 percent for the chain retailers.
Similarly, the local restaurants re-
circulate an average of 79 percent
of their revenue locally, compared
to 30 percent for the chain eateries.
What accounts for the difference?
Independent businesses spend
much more on local labor. They
also procure more goods for resale
locally and rely much more heavily
on local providers for services like
accounting and printing. This
means that much of the money a
customer spends at a local store or
restaurant is re-spent within the
local economy, supporting other
businesses and jobs.

The Ram 1500 has been named a 2013
Automobile Magazine All-Star by the
publications editorial staff for the third
time in the past four years.
The Automobile Magazine All-Star
award puts the 2013 Ram 1500 on top of
other half-ton trucks in the market, said
Reid Bigland, President and CEO Ram
Truck Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. This
prestigious award doesnt just focus on
new trucks but all current model trucks
and were proud to accept the honor.
For 2013, the new Ram 1500 offers
buyers best-in-class 25 MPG fuel effi-
ciency, new technology and new features
without sacrificing capability. Ram
1500the most recognizable pickup on
the roadmarks a milestone for Ram as
this truck delivers a truckload of pioneer-
ing and fuel-saving systems. Equipped
with a choice of engines, including the
legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine or
the award-winning Pentastar V-6, the
Ram 1500 offers the best powertrains in
the industry, known for their reliability.
Automobile Magazines testers put the
luxurious Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn
through its paces and were favorably
impressed.
"The chocolate brown hide and thick
stitching are of European quality, there's
real wood on the dash, and it comes
without the tawdry veneer that looks like
cheap plastic," the article states.
Automobile Magazine declares: "The
Longhorn is the ultimate in cowboy
cool."
The 2013 Ram 1500 features first-in-
segment technologies: eight-speed auto-
matic transmission, stop-start system,
thermal management system, pulse-
width modulation and active aerody-
namics, including grille shutters and
active air suspension. The 2013 Ram
1500 is available in nine trim levels and
starts at $23,900 including $1050 destina-
tion charge.
Ram engineers changed every area of
the truck from a newly designed frame
to new engines and transmissions to a
new interior with the next-generation
Uconnect Access system. With best-in-
class ride and handling and best-in-class
aerodynamics, the 2013 Ram 1500 deliv-
ers unmatched content, performance
and capability to truck buyers.

Simply spectacular! There is no better way to
describe this weeks feature listing; a stunningly
beautiful Northern Michigan lakeside estate set
upon approximately 18 acres that includes over
400 feet of frontage on all-sports Oley Lake just
east of Gaylord.
The custom built two-story dream home
offers approximately 4,764 square feet of living
space on the main two levels, plus it has a
mostly finished full basement that is highlight-
ed by an entertainment room and a sound
room, bringing the total space in the home to a
whopping 7,100 square feet. There are five bed-
rooms and four baths, an attached (and heated)
oversized three-car garage, a pole barn and sta-
bles on the grounds and a list of amenities that must be seen to be fully
appreciated. Among those are hardwood and tile flooring, vaulted ceil-
ings, a spacious gourmet kitchen, wet bar, jetted tub in the master suite,
central air conditioningthe list goes on and on.
Outdoors, while the 405 feet of frontage on Oley Lake certainly takes
center stage, and views of the lake and pristine grounds can be enjoyed
from the living areas inside the home, from the elegant and inviting wrap
around covered porch and up close on the private sandy beach area or on
the fiberglass dock.
This one-of-a-kind home and location is listed at $745,000 - Call Mike

What
Homeowners
Insurance
Discounts Are
You Missing?
Compliments of
Ed Wohlfiel
Part 2 of 2
3) Home MaintenanceYou
may be able to qualify for an age
of wiring discount depending on
how old your wiring is. Is your
roof resistant to hail? Roofing is
graded as Class 1 through Class
4. Class 4 roofs are often eligible
for discount. New pipes can also
qualify you for a discount. Do
you have handrails installed
alongside your staircases? If you
have a pool is it surrounded with
a fence at a gate? Safety measures
also can count toward your poli-
cy. If your home was recently
renovated or is newer that may
entitle you to a discount. Older
homes can be retrofitted with
materials that make them more
earthquake and weather resist-
ant.
4) Policyholder DiscountsIf
you havent filed a home insur-
ance claim in the last 10 years
you may want to ask about a dis-
count. Homeowners who havent
made a claim can often get as
much as a 20% reduction. If you
are older and retired you may
also be entitled to a discount.
Bundling your home insurance
with other policies can also yield
a savings as can being a long-
term policyholder. Another
money-saving factor you may
consider is raising your
deductible, which can lower your
premium but make sure that in
the event you need to use your
insurance policy that your budg-
et will accommodate a higher
deductible.
In todays competitive market,
its important to shop around,
because you may receive dis-
parate quotes on policies that
offer essentially the same cover-
age. Check consumer guides,
insurance agents, companies
and online insurance quote serv-
ices. This will give you an idea of
price ranges and tell you which
companies have the lowest
prices.
