New in 3WXM 7.0.9.2 - Access Point Based License In prior versions of 3WXM, licensing was based on either 10 controllers or an upgrade license to 64 controllers. With the continued improvement over the number of APs and controllers supported, 3Com is switching to an AP based license. License are now based on a primary license of 12 APs and 1 controller with upgrades in increments of 12, 48, 96 and 480. The RF Planning tool is now offered as a separate orderable model number.
Anyone running the 3CWXMUPA upgrade will see the same as above, but it will include an additional 480 AP upgrade for a total of 972 supported APs. For anyone running over this license capacity on an existing configuration should contact their 3Com sales representative to get another upgrade at no charge to make their installation of 3WXM whole. New in 3WXM 7.0.9.2 - PCI Compliance Report A new report is introduced in 3WXM Version 7.0.9.2 name the PCI Compliance Report. PCI or PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) was developed by major credit card companies as a guideline for companies that process credit card information. The standards assist companies with preventing credit card fraud, cracking, and various other security vulnerabilities and threats. A company that processes credit card information must comply with PCI guidelines or risk losing the ability to process credit card information if violations are found during an audit of the network. The PCI Compliance report contains the number and categories of violations located on the target network. A network vulnerability leads to a violation of the PCI guidelines. The PCI Compliance report is located in the list of reports available on 3WXM. To generate the report, follow these steps:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Click Reports on the menu bar. Select PCI Compliance Report from the Report Types list. From the Task list, click Generate. Select a time and date range for the report. Click the available link to review the report.
3CWXM12 - Base license supporting 12 APs and 1 controller 3CWXM12UP - Upgrade from base to add 12 APs and remove controller limits 3CWXM48UP - Upgrade from base to add 48 APs and remove controller limits 3CWXM96UP - Upgrade from base to add 96 APs and remove controller limits 3CWXM480UP - Upgrade from base to add 480 APs and remove controller limits 3CWX-RF-PLAN - RF Planner
Any existing 3WXM license will find their support migrated to the new licensing platform as follows: Anyone running the 3CWXM10A will automatically support the base license of 12 APs, and upgrade of 480 APs and the RF Planner. This will happen when the software is upgraded.
Version Compatibility
Version Compatibility
Known Restrictions:
Network plans created with 3WXM 6.0 or later are compatible with this version of 3WXM. If you want to use network plans created with previous versions of 3WXM, make sure that the option to delete the network plans directory is not checked before you install. After you install the new software, 3WXM asks whether the old network plans are to be sent to the server (if you want to keep them) or deleted. If multiple clients are using the same server, then the old network plans need to be copied only once.
Guest Access Manager (GAM) does not operate with V7.0. Guest Access Manager Advanced is available for systems running V7.0 or greater. Controllers running V4.x are not supported with V7.x of 3WXM.
Upgrade path for MSS is 4.2.10 > 6.0.4 > 6.0.6 > 7.0. This version of 3WXM has been verified against MSS Version 7.0. To upgrade 3WXM, install a newer version of 3WXM over a previous version. You do not need to uninstall the previous version before installing a newer version. Before upgrading, make a backup of the config-db directory in the 3WXM installation directory. As a best practice, back up the config-db directory on a regular basis to ensure that you have copies of your network plans. If you uninstall a previous version of 3WXM before upgrading, make sure you note the serial number and license key from the License Information dialog box, which you access by selectingHelp>Licensing from the main 3WXM window. You can also save a copy of the license information by starting 3WXM and clicking Save in the License Information dialog box.
If you are upgrading from a version earlier than 6.0, it is recommended that you upgrade to 6.0 first, then upgrade from 6.0 to 7.0. If you are installing for the first time, you must request a license from 3Com for each host on which you plan to install 3WXM Services. You can use the 3WXM serial number and a valid host name to request license keys for the following type of license:
Depending on the license, you might also have restrictions on the numbers of WX controllers you can manage using 3WXM. When requesting a license, you must provide your license key that is included with your 3WXM CD case and a serial number that will be generated on the system you are installing on. For installation instructions, see the Wireless Switch Manager Reference Manual.
Supported Platforms
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or higher, Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or Microsoft Vista Enterprise. SUSE Linux 10.2 and Red Hat WS ES 5.
You must use the English version of the operating system. Operating system versions in other languages are not supported with 3WXM.
You may see a message stating that a web sites certificate cannot be verified and asking if you want to continue. The 3WXM Java Web Start Client uses a self-signed certificate to identify the application to your computer, and clicking Yes allows the installation to continue. Client software installation begins on your computer. The IP address of the 3WXM server is used to identify the client.
3 After the software is installed, you can create a short-
cation is available to you. If user login is enabled, log in with your 3WXM credentials.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and later Mozilla FireFox 1.5.1 and later Macintosh Safari 1.2 and later
Take these steps to install the 3WXM Java Web Start Client on a Windows platform:
Known Issues
The Client Errors by Time chart in the Monitoring view shows a value of 0, even if client errors have occurred. (53693)
The errors are available in the Alarms view and in the Client Error reports
Occasionally, one or more WXs may cease responding while in the 'Executing' state during the MSS upgrade process. (38413)
If this occurs, cancel the operation, and delete the WX from the network plan. Then, upload the WX again.
services-db directory to the one that is created by the installation in step 3. When you start the downgrade version of 3WXM, it opens the Default network plan. Use File > Switch Network Plan menu bar option to open your plan. If you need to downgrade the WX switches managed by 3WXM, you can do so before or after the 3WXM downgrade.
Because of a limitation in Windows XP that allows no more than 10 half-open connections, running 3WXM services on Windows XP is not recommended if your network plan contains more than 10 devices.
If 10 devices in your network plan were unreachable or not responding, Windows XP would exceed its half-open connection limit, and connection attempts to reachable devices might time out as a result. If your network plan contains more than 10 devices, and you want to run 3WXM services on a Windows system, use a server OS, such as Windows 2000 or Windows 2003, instead of Windows XP.
Known Issues
The Insert AP menu item may be missing when you right-click in a coverage area of type 802.11a or 802.11na. (60314)
To insert AP on this coverage area, you should click Insert AP from the Tools panel and then click on the coverage area to place it.
Linux: The default browser is Firefox, which is not included with SuSE. (30491)
On SuSE, the default browser executable is Firefox. However, the Firefox browser is not included with the
SuSE distribution; only the Konqueror browser is included. The Konqueror browser is not supported by 3WXM. Install a different browser for accessing 3WXM online help. Preferred browsers for Linux are Firefox, Opera, Mozilla, and Netscape.
3WXM incorrectly displayed an error message when configuring bias on an AP. (62380, 61517) Primary and secondary information about a cluster configuration was not displayed in 3WXM (62299) SNMPv3 packets were not correctly decrypted when SNMPv3 was configured in 3WXM. (61225) Using the "Locate Client" feature did not work as expected. (61988) The RSSI heatmap was generated after importing a network plan and no APs were present on the network. (61977) When copying and pasting APs from one Mobility Domain to another, the APs were duplicated instead of being placed in the new Mobility Domain. (61934) You could not change the system IP address of a WX using 3WXM. (61691) Importing a *.cvs file into 3WXM did not work as expected. (61819)
Daylight Savings Time or timezone changes are not automatically detected in 3WXM. (18422)
If a Daylight Savings Time or timezone change occurs on the host machine where 3WXM is running, displayed timestamps are not automatically updated in 3WXM. This issue is actually a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) issue. The JVM does not detect date or time changes made at the OS level. See the following web page:
bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=421 6582
Exit and restart 3WXM to place a date or time change made on the host machine that is running 3WXM into effect.
Resolved Issues
Known Issues Resolved in Version 7.0.12.2
Special characters, such as ampersand, could not be used within the customized Web portal page designed through WebView. (62462)
802.11n clients did not display properly in the Operational Rate report. (57952) Upgrading from 3WXM 6.0.x to 3WXM 7.0.x caused the RADIUS server dead time value to change from 5 to 0 which appears as a network change in 3WXM. (56185) Accepting autotune changes caused the 3WXM client to become unresponsive. (59046) A VLAN name was randomly reset to an empty string for service profiles, MAC users, MAC user groups, named users, or named user groups. (58429)
Large floor plans caused 3WXM to use large amounts of server memory. (42374)
