STAFF MEMBER RESPONSIBLE: Dr Zhaohui Huang LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

MODULE CODE: CIV 6215 SEMESTER: Autumn CREDIT: 15

1. apply the principles of limit state design to structural and foundation design. 2. perform structural analysis to calculate design loads acting on structures, members and foundations. 3. design simple structural elements made of concrete or steel, such as beams, columns and concrete slabs following guidance contained in the Eurocodes. 4. design simple foundation elements such as footings and piles following guidance contained in the Eurocodes. 5. present design calculations and sketches in a clear and informative way. SYLLABUS Limit State Design Principles Philosophy of design: design process, basis of design. Ultimate and serviceability limit states. Formative Assessment: feedback on assessed design exercises. Reason for assessment choice: -The unseen examination is intended to test students ability to design structural elements and simple foundations. Questions require students to know how to apply principles of limit states design and perform design and checks on structural elements in concrete and steel and on foundations. The paper contains questions which test students basic knowledge and understanding of structural elements and foundation design so that a student should be able to demonstrate a threshold performance by answering these questions. Some questions will require students to demonstrate a thorough understanding across the full range of the materials within the module. The design exercises are designs of structural members and foundations for multi-storey concrete and steel buildings. Students are required to perform structural analysis to calculate design loads acting on structures, members, and foundations and determine the size of structural members and foundations and verify their adequacy. A report from each student will assess the students ability to undertake design and prepare supporting calculations and drawings. HEALTH AND SAFETY MATTERS ADDRESSED
