Some fundamental discoveries were made in India during the first thirty
years of the twentieth century. Schools of research were coming up, albeit
slowly. But to a person of foresight it was evident that Independence was
just around the corner and a lot of effort would be needed to undo
the lethargy of centuries. Apart from the efforts of a handful of
extraordinary men, little had been done to take the message of modern
science to the masses.

It is difficult to imagine the bleakness of the scientific setup before the war.
Today, India can boast of having the third largest pool of scientific and
technical manpower in the world. How did it all happen? The network of
scientific institutions, which now span the country, came into being only in
the fifties. They grew out of the efforts of many people, the foremost among
them being Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, a man with tremendous zeal, energy
and foresight.

Pedalling is probably the most efficient use of the muscles of the human
body. Pedal power, using either a bicycle-like pedal arrangement or a treadle
mechanism, can be used to power a variety of agricultural equipment, water
pumps, grinders and electric generators.

At the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines, engineers

have developed a small, lightweight, inexpensive foot powered pump that
will lift large quantities of water several feet, using only moderate amounts
of human power. The operator simply stands on two footrests at either end
of the pump and rocks back and forth. This effect compresses a diaphragm
which forces water from the outlet valve. By operating the pump in a
rhythmic manner, a continuous flow of water is pumped.

In the last century, the idea of nature conservation was virtually unknown.
To the British rulers, hunting was a form of sport. Well-known hunters used
to visit this country attracted by the profusion of wildlife. When these
veteran hunters went back, they wrote books describing their exploits. Two
or three rhinos or tigers before breakfast was hardly an exaggerated claim
for a trigger happy enthusiast. Remarks like these found in those memoirs
indicate how rich in forests and wildlife India must have been in those days.
It was an age when hunting for sport was not only considered manly but
also a status symbol for the upper middle-class Indian Salim Ali was born in
such a family. Having lost his parents very early, he and his eight brothers

gun when he was nine. Salim gears up wanting to be an explorer and a big-

the study of birds was aroused.

In the moment of patriotic fervour, Prafulla Chandra Ray had written
Science can wait, Swaraj cannot'. But what happened in Bengal in the first
quarter of the present century clearly showed that there was no conflict
between the two. There was a great nationalist upsurge at this time, spurred
on by Lord Curzon's partition of Bengal. In spite of all the unrest however
science in India was making headway in an ill-equipped laboratory at
Bowbazar Street, and later at a Dhaka University.

 Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born in 1888 in Tiruchirappalli. His
father taught physics and mathematics in a college so Raman had the
