PC CLEANUP for winXP

(other windows op sys similar)

I have been asked many times how to speed up a laptop / desktop pc , whether its an old machine or recently new, due to its speed decrease and lengthy time booting up. So I decided to quickly note down a sequence of operations to clean and speen up a pc .. !lease complete these steps in the order I have shown otherwise the operation wont be as successful as it should (for e"ample , no point in defragging a drive before removing all the crap as you will be defragging the crap#) $. %ninstall any unused programmes, routines that you do not use or need I suggest a cleaner such as YourUninstaller & this uses ' steps to clean your pc (irstly it uses the programmes uninstaller (if available), then it sweeps the hard drive for redundant files and directories of the programme, and finally it searches and removes programme items from the registry. (the smaller your registry, the faster your pc #) otherwise )ust use the proggies unnstaller +elete all your current crap from the pc ,his time I suggest a free programme called CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com/ -lso, manually remove any large unused files such as video files from your pc .lean your registry & be careful /ou need a good registry cleaner & I use J !" http0//www.macecraft.com/ ,here is a 12 day trial there. I have had many problems in the past with registry cleaners but never with this one, )ust run it in normal mode. 4un a full antivirus and antimalware check (or -ntivirus I suggest the free proggy A # $ree &use the following link http0//free.avg.com/us5en/download5avg5anti5virus5free (or antimalware use %alwareb&tes & its very good and also free http0//www.malwarebytes.org/ ,hese * system checks will take a long time to complete so be patient. '$ULL (CAN PLEA(E $)* +),-. I do suggest running them in (A$E%)/E (press (6 when pc booting up) ,his will ensure no little baddies have loaded into memory and are hiding when you run the progs) If you have more than $ drive then place your Swapfile on the different drive to your boot drive and reduce the si8es to appro" *9: and make both ma" and min si8e the same (tart0control panel0s&stem0a12ance10performance0a12ance102irtual memor&3 chan4e0 .lick required drive, then custom si8e and enter values ..then click Set, remove the one for drive . if this is your system drive. (you will need a reboot for this to take effect). 4emove system startup programmes, these little blighters are the main cause of your slow pc. ;ew progs, when being installed, usually add themselves to startup automatically on pc bootup but all these take quite a while to load up and use your memory and therefore slow down your pc (tart0*un3 in this bo" type %(C)N$5# 3 this will open a dialogue bo", we are )ust interested in the (tartup tab so click it /ou should notice a list of items with bo"es ticked on the left side, its these ticked bo"es we need to untick for the programmes we don<t need during normal running of the pc (or e"ample, the programmes that shoul1 be left tic6e1 are items such as display drivers (-,I, ;vidia etc) Sound controllers, antivirus, firewalls and any items from =icrosoft . ,he items you should be unticking are such items as -dobe, .anon, >pson, any printing, photo, phone or game software and any items you rarely use. ;o -utocad or design stuff or updating progs for adobe , quicktime , google, msn etc If unsure either check with 9oogle or )ust leave it ticked (inally +>(4-9 your system drive In windows >"plorer right click on your .0/ drive (if that<s your system boot drive then choose !roperties@,ools@+efragment now .lick 9eneral tab also and uncheck -llow Inde"ing Service to inde" drive & this makes a small difference also
I hope this helps and #))/ LUC7888.Aes Bohnson (arrlesCblueyonder.co.uk)
