THE SCOUT LAW

4 am sure "ou won9t like to &la" a game without an" rules, im&rovising 1s "ou go. 4t becomes a &ointless e:ercise and generall" a waste of time. +he game of Scouting too has its rules; the nine law. Like the Promise, the law is the basis for &ractical scout activities. 1s "ou &rogress in "our scout skill and self discover". 1 .ood Scout master will not onl" &ersonall" instruct the scout in the law and &romise, but will &rovide e:am&les of &ractical a&&lication of it with his life.

Here is the Scout Law : 1. A Scout is Trustworthy : 5ou are e:&ected to tell the truth alwa"s and not onl" when it is convenient. 5ou carr" out orders even when no one is watching. 5our word must mean something, and must be reliable. 2. A Scout is loyal : Lo"alt" without being fanatic must be "our ideals. *idelit" to &arents, +eachers, scoutmaster, friends and &atrol brings "ou a belonging. 4t also Means being fair and avoiding cutting corners is achieving "our goals. 5our &artici&ation in <ommunit" =evelo&ment Pro>ects is a measure of "our Lo"alt". 3. A Scout is a Friend to all and a Brother to every other Scout : +his bond of brotherhood is what makes Scouting such a close knit movement. *riendliness, o&enness and a read" smile must differentiate "ou as a Scout from other bo"s. 4. A Scout is Courteous: 5ou are courteous to ever"one, low or high, small or big, because "ou believe in the inherent dignit" of man. <ourtes" comes from the &osition of strength and not of weakness. 5ou must be &olite es&eciall" to women, children and elderl" &eo&le. =o not acce&t an" reward for being &olite and courteous and never forget to thank for the favours received. 5. A Scout is a Friend to Animal and oves !ature: 5ou do not let them suffer unnecessaril". 4t must be "our ?ndeavour to &rotect life. 5our efforts along with that of others to save the environment and kee& the ecological balance is ver" much within the &urview of this law. ". A Scout is #isci$lined and %el$ &rotect &u'lic &ro$erty : 3emember what .urudev 3abindranath +agore said about disci&line. 4t is like the finel" tuned strings of a violin, then onl" it &roduces beautiful music. +o achieve an" goal "ou need disci&line and if "ou do "ou do not learn it now when "ou are "oung, it is going to be difficult to achieve after the words. 1void unnecessar" discussions, grumblings. <arr" out orders smartl" and cheerfull"6 .od loves a cheerful giver. Punctualit", smartness and orderliness are &art of this law.

(. A Scout is Coura)eous: @nl" fools do not fear, but a brave man overcomes his fears and faces the danger when it is necessar", es&eciall" for hel&ing other. @bstacles and difficulties become unsurmountable onl" when "ou lose heart and give u&. 3emember Scouts are known for their Anever sa" die9 s&rit. *. A Scout is Thri+ty: A/aste not, want not9. Some of the develo&ed societies are called /aste societies, but the" won9t remain develo&ed if the" continue to waste their resources. =o not be carried awa" b" what the advertisements sa" and s&end "our mone" and time. +hink of the &oor and do not waste food. 5ou must avoid unscientific and wasteful use of our natural resources, like water, forest, animals, etc. ,. A Scout is &ure in Thou)ht -ord and #eed: 4t is mainl" to be &ure and clean minded. 1 dirt" mind leads to dirt" words. 5ou must stand for clean s&eech, clean s&ort and clean habits. ,eware of com&anions, books and &ictures which do not hel& "ou to be clean. Trusty. oyal and %el$+ul Brotherly. Courteous and /ind. 0'edient. Smilin) and Thri+ty. &ure as the rustlin) wind. 1n thou)ht word and deed.

THE SCOUT MOTTO 1 slogan or catch word is ver" short, but hides &rofound meaning and sentiment. /hen Mahatma .andhi gave the call 2#A!#1 C%A 03 4t was not for >ust making some salt, but an em&hatic cr" for self rule and inde&endence. /hen the 1mericans shout A3emember 1lamo9, it is war cr" bent on turning a disaster into victor". +he Scout Motto or slogan A,e

HAND SHADE

1 Scout greets another member of the Movement b" shaking hands with left hand while giving the Scout sign with his right hand. 4t is a form of .reeting which has been ado&ted throughout the Scout /orld. +he *ounder borrowed this idea from the 1shanti +ribes of 1frica. /hen once, ,.P. wanted to shake hands, with an 1shanti <hieftain. +he <hieftain offered him his left hand, sa"ing that in his tribe the ,ravest of the brave offers his left hand to a friend, after la"ing down his defensive shield, thus indicating his defencelessness and his +rust in his friend. ,aden Powell wanted his Scouts and 5@' to leave aside all defensive &ostures and be o&en to welcome others, es&eciall" brother Scout.

YOUR DAILY GOOD TURN

*rom e:&erience "ou can tell that it is not unusual to do a great act of kindness in a sudden mood of generosit", but it demands a lot from a &erson to do even a small act of good turn on a consistent basis. 5ou might also feel certain amount of awkwardness in hel&ing &eo&le at home, but "ou are reminded ver" strongl" that A<harit" begins at home9 and "our own &eo&le, =ad, Mum.
