JMS 415E/4 History of the United States of America Course coordinator: Dr. Sah-Hadiyatan Ismail INTRODUCTION This paper aimed to provide students with good understanding on the development of the United States of America from colonial beginnings in the 16th century, when the first European explorers arrived, until modern times. Therefore, the course objectives are to: Explain the formation of a new United States of America and the liberation from the British occupation. Explain the administration of the government system and American politics. Explain and identify the issues that divided North and South, and which precipitated the American Civil War. Identify and deduce the inspirations, politics, influence and thoughts on the drafting of the US Constitution. Explain and identify the issues and the factors in the development of American foreign policy.

Assignment/ Continuous Exam Students are required to write an essay not longer than 3,000 words. The assignment must be typed and neat. Each essay must include your name, I/C number, course, semester/year, lecturers name, number and the title of the assignment. Students are advised to use as many as possible reference books, articles from journals and relevant newspaper. Students are advised to use CDROM (Pais International) and Internet services in order to search for research materials. Students are required to write all the references at the end of your essay properly and systematically besides the footnotes at the appropriate places. Students are advised to make a copy of your assignment before submitting the essay. The last day of submission is 31 January 2014. The evaluation will be based on the presentation and the originality of the essay. Presentation with critical analysis and arguments are encouraged. The statement below must be written on the front page of the essay and you must put down your signature.
